Let's talk nipples

Mine have been sore. This is normal, I realize.

But the past few days they have gotten INSANELY sore. And now, thanks to the arctic weather, they are also a bit chapped. To the point that slipping on my nightgown last night caused me to gasp in pain. Getting in bed and having the blanket laying on my chest caused pain. I'm pretty sure if someone looked at them it would cause pain.

I tried putting a thick creamy lotion on them last night -- it helped a bit once it was on, but the act of actually putting the lotion on made me almost cry.

Any ideas or suggestions, ladies? I'm desperate for some relief here.

  • Lanolin? It works when your nipples are chapped from nursing. Maybe give it a try.
  • I always have super sensitive nipples, and find that wearing a bra all the time (so things can't rub on them) helps.

  • are they red/inflamed at all?
  • I'm in the same boat. Almost screamed in the shower last night when the water hit 'em. Time to buy some lanolin. I don't remember this with baby #1. Ugh.

  • I also vote for Lanolin. It really is a miracle product.

If they are redder, it is just barely so. They look engorged more than inflamed, if that makes sense.

I just know these bitches hurt. Bad.

My nipples are way sensitive lately and I feel like my boobs grow by the day. I may be stocking up on nipple cream this weekend.

  • I find I cannot moisturizer too much. I've also adjusted the water pressure in my shower and wear a bra more of the time to keep them from rubbing... I've just learned about sleep bras and think I need to invest in a couple. Oh, and they're giant. I was also checking out maternity bras (I don't really understand how they're "maternity"), and they tend to be unlined with no underwire. Why? If ever there was a time for added lining and support, this is it!

  • I'm going to try some of these  suggestions later, but I need something to get through tonight ... On hand I've got:
    • baby oil
    • jojoba oil
    • Burt's Bees farmer's friend salve
    • an assortment of thick, heavy lotions
    • aveeno anti-itch oatmeal lotion
    • chapstick
What sounds like the best bet?

  • I had this problem in the beginning when my boobs quadrupled in size over night. I used a Johnson's baby oil/gel that I had bought this summer. It locks the moisture in and solved my boobie issue almost overnight. Based on my experience- I'd say try one of the oils. Good luck!!
  • If the Chapstick is the kind like Vaseline I would go with that. I'm a fan of the Burt's Bees moisturizers, but I've never tried that one.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one with the giant, painful knockers. I went from a modest B cup to spilling out of this D cup. I find the underwire so uncomfortable that I've resorted to mainly sports bras. I also feel like they're squared off (like there is a rubrics cube in them if that makes sense). Sooooo uncomfortable. My nipples get sore occasionally but not every day, I find sleeping in a sports bra helps me.

  • I agree with sleeping in a sports bra. It's help me sooooo much with tittay pain.

Just hope that your boobs don't stay the same size while your nipples double in size!! :O :D

Oh the nipples are getting bigger and darker. Lol

  • If I get cold I am in major trouble - my nipples get insanely painful - like nothing I have ever felt! It feels like they are on fire! They turn dark red and the only way I can make the pain go away is to take a warm bath or hot shower. It is honestly the worst pain, I can't function when it happens (I usually have good pain tolerance so I'm not wimping out here!). And then once they are better, they stay super sensitive for a couple of days. This has always happened to me when I PMS to a much lesser degree but now that I am pregnant it is worse X 1000000!!!

What does it mean if they are red and inflamed?
  • I'm with you!  My pain comes and goes depending on the day.  I started using Lansinoh - HPA Lanolin that I got at Buy Buy Baby.  I've been using it everyday even when I'm having a good nipple day, and I put it on when I get out of the shower so my skin can soak it all up.  It's def been helping with the dryness, but unfortunately I don't think there's much you can do when you get 'razor-blade nips', as I call them.  I've also been sleeping with a bra on because I just can't without it right now both because of my nipples and the mere size of my bazongas, they're just so sore.

  • I was told at some point not to use lotion on my nipples, I'm not really sure why. I also don't wash them with a washcloth or anything to exfoliate. I second joules suggestion on the earth mama angel baby, you can get it on amazon. Of the things you listed, maybe the salve?

  • I seriously don't even recognize my boobs anymore. I hate going in the refrigerator section at the grocery store, it hurts so bad... Walmart wouldn't have lanolin would it? If so where?

They should have it, most likely Medela brand with nursing/pumping supplies - same row as baby bottles.

  • @megk82 yes!!! To me that was the worst part. I'm so glad I'll have my pump on day one this time.

  • I feel rather lucky that my boobs haven't grown much.  They were a large B, small C before the baby.  Now they're a little fuller but not much else.  They are occasionally sore to the point of distraction, but for the most part, it hasn't gotten to bad... yet.
  • Yes i am in the same boat my nipples are so sore

  • Mine are maybe slightly more sensitive, but nothing painful or more than a little noticeable. DH did mention when we were being intimate the other night how the nips were bigger. Very romantic.....any thoughts about my ass?

  • DH started calling my nipples - sausage nipples because they are huge and dark brown now. I'm like all the better for baby to have a huge target later. Lol

  • I'm having that cold sensitivity issue. I went last week to get my new favorite thing, a Jamba Juice smoothie and pounded that thing down. Big mistake! Instead of brain freeze, I got boob freeze! Nips were like stone and so painful I had to go directly home and warm pack them. Boob freeze? Seriously body?!
  • So, for what it's worth: I used the jojoba oil last night and this morning found an old tub of calendula salve in the vanity and used that.

It helped. Things are not back to "normal" but I didn't wince when I put my bra on so... progress.

I am now scared shitless of breastfeeding though.
