I hate my placenta.

My low-lying placenta was still only 1 cm from my cervix at 28 weeks, so my doctor let me know I will probably need to schedule a c-section. I didn't think this would bother me, but I guess I really was hoping to give birth naturally. I'm kind of freaking out over the prospect of a c-section and would really appreciate any insight.

Re: I hate my placenta.

  • I have a low lying placenta. we will be checking mine the last week of February. I know is hard to have things not go as planned but it there is still a chance you wont. and if you do need a csection you are doing the best thing for your baby! My best friend had to have a c section with #2. she said it was less stressful and even though the recovery was harder she had her energy up to take care of baby.

I have the same issue, and get remeasured next week to see if it moved. I am surprised they will not check it once more before your due date, it seems like there is plenty of time for it to move still.

That being said, a lot of women end up having c sections, and at least you will know before hand and have time to prepare mentally, rather than planning to do a natural birth and being told during delivery you have to have a c section.
  • A planned c-sec is apparently much easier on your body than an unplanned, so you have that going for you. Plus, it's way preferable to bleeding out, so focus on the positives there.

Start asking your OB what standard procedures are- what anesthesia, will your arms be strapped or free, how quickly will you be able to hold LO, when will your nurse LO, will you be able to bring baby with you to recovery, anything you're worried or curious about. Then if you are told anything you don't feel comfortable with you can ask for alternatives or the reason for it.

  • Yeah, my placenta is being an asshole, too. Although, my doctor said she won't make any decisions on when/if to schedule a c/s until 36 weeks barring any complications (mine is previa currently).

Yours is already 1cm away - only 1 more to go! I'd push for another u/s to check again in a few weeks if I were you. There is still time! All this unknowing does make it difficult to mentally prepare, though.

    Also, good advice, @ksulli !

  • I had a CS with DS and was shocked at how "easy" my recovery was. I say that relatively speaking, of course. I was up and moving on my own less than 24 hours after surgery and would was back to myself (minus sex and working out) about 2 weeks post surgery, much sooner than anticipated. I never delivered vaginally so I can't compare, but my CS experience was very positive.

  • My doctor does want me to get it rechecked at 32-33 weeks (also to check my 96th percentile sized baby); he just mentioned that there is a "good chance" I will need a c-section at this point because he wants it at 2.5cm. He is very straight and to the point, so I know he is feeling like this will be the case.

I'm already bitter because this is my first pregnancy, and I have no risk factors for this...I know my doctor will do what's best for my baby, I am just very scared of having a c-section, the associated risks, and what it could mean for future pregnancies.

  • My placenta completly covers the cervix but my Dr has me going once a month for us's because he says it can still move though unlikely at this point. Also DS is apparently super big so looks like a c section for me either way. He said he's planning it for 39 weeks right now. I had DD vaginaly so this is new and scary for me as well though I am looking forward to getting my tubes tied same day and not having to have contractions. Try to think of the benefits rather than the scary stuff.

  • I feel the same way and all you ladies are giving great advice. I am thinking positive about my placenta moving up, but am nervous for if it doesn't. I agree it will be much nicer to know we will have to do a c section going into it but it doesnt make it any less scary.
  • C-section was one of my top fears when I was pregnant with DD, and I ended up with a c-section at 29 weeks because I had pre-e/HELLP and DD needed to be delivered ASAP. The idea of having a preemie was scary, but the surgery itself was not as bad as I imagined it would be. They gave me a spinal block (as opposed to anesthesia) so I was conscious for the whole thing and my DH was able to be in the room with me. He talked to me the whole time and kept my mind off of everything. It was over before I knew it. I may have felt a slight pressure when they took DD out, but there was no pain at all.

  • I had a low lying placenta at 20 weeks and my OB told me she would check again around 36 weeks to see if I would need a c-section. According to her, the majority of cases she has seen have moved more toward the end. So there is still hope it can move :)
  • Just a positive story....I had a complete previa at 20 weeks (centered on cervix) and I went in this week at 27 weeks and it had completely moved. I wasn't even prepared for such good news!!!! It's over 3.5 cm away from cervix opening. You have time for it to move still! Just stay positive and pray lots! It worked for me :) And I wasn't on bed rest or anything like that....just pelvic rest.
  • I have no experience with previa but I did have a csection with my son at 37 weeks. I had a great experience. It literally took 6 mins from laying down in the OR to my son being born, the rest of the surgery I didn't notice because I was distracted with my son. The only surprising part of the csection was the tugging feeling you feel during it to get the baby out. My recovery was amazing, I walked a ton at the hospital and even more when I got home.
  • Just found out exactly how low my placenta is. 0.1cm, I knew it was low but had no idea it was that low. Still hoping it moves up. I think my husband is trying to be super optimistic for me and keeps saying we have plenty of time it will be fine. Im trying to think that way too.
