3rd Trimester

VBAC question

My dr has been very supportive of me having a vbac and as of last Wednesday he was still on board. Saturday I got a letter in the mail saying now he wants me to have a c section with the time and date scheduled. Of course my appt isn't till later this week so I have to wait to talk to him.

Has this happened to any one else. I'm wondering if it's bc I failed my strep test last week or if they just scheduled it to be on the safe side.

I know you ladies aren't my doctors and can't tell me what he is thinking, I guess I just needed to vent.

Re: VBAC question

  • Yes. My doctor had me schedule a csection in the event that I make it to 40w and my cervix isn't ripe. In that instance they can't give me all the drugs I would need to be induced. (Mainly the one to ripen my cervix).

This is a last resort though.

  • That's weird to me. I was asked to schedule one and so I scheduled it around 41.5 weeks and ended up later pushing it to 42 weeks. I hope he just wants it as a backup otherwise I'd be ticked at the bait-and-switch.

  • Yeah I'm hoping it's just a precaution, I knew a c section was a possibility, just surprised by the letter

  • I'd be annoyed by the letter without warning.

How far along will you be at your csection?

Different hospitals/doctors have different rules. It used to be all sections were scheduled at 38 and if you didn't go into labor before, no VBAC. As studies come out, those rules are changing. My hospital is flexible and I am scheduled for a csection at 41 weeks, 4 days. I don't feel comfortable waiting longer than that.

  • I'll be 39 weeks at the time it's scheduled. At my hospital they won't do a vbac if I'm way over or before my due date, or if I have to be induced. I always knew it was an option, just surprised by the letter, and this weeks appt can't come soon enough.

  • If they scheduled it for 39 weeks, that doesn't sound like a precaution. I would definitely have a lot of questions at the next appt and try to see if this doctor is really supportive of you having a VBAC. Because scheduling you for a 39 week c/s is not supportive.

I 100% agree with this. My only other thought is hopefully it is a clerical error and you weren't supposed to get a letter.
  • Turns out the office sent it out by mistake. My doctor is very supportive of me having a vbac. Yay!

  • Glad to hear it was a mistake! As a precaution, I would go over the July 2009 ACOG guidelines with your doctor, and find out exactly what his or her parameters are regarding your TOLAC. Good luck with your VBAC! I was able to have a VBA2C, and it was an amazing experience.
