Pg#2 - I didn't know I was in active labor, took DD to the library, went to work, went to my regular OB appt and was told to get something to eat and check into L&D. I had to wait in line at hagan daaz; I decided not to pull the "I am in labor" card. The milkshake I wanted wasn't very good but the ice cream cone I got DH was fantastic. 2 hours after I checked into L&D, DS was born. DH got my 1st words on camera: "he's very wrinkly". Thankfully there's a picture of me absolutely exuberant kissing the top of DS' (wrinkly) head. A fellow new mom also did not know she was in active labor. She figured it out when she had the transition contraction. Her DD was inadvertently born at home, an ah-emm inadvertent water birth, if you will. Baby was healthy and mom received treatment at the hospital for retained placenta. Wishing you and your new squish well!

  • I was induced. I was admitted to the hospital around 6:30pm to start cervidil. I was stuck at 1 cm for a while. Around 2:30 I was started on pitocin and LO was here by 9:25am. :)
I have heard so many horror stories about being induced but it wasn't bad for me. I was able to deliver vaginally. LO was 7 lbs 9 oz and PERFECT!

I hope your delivery goes smoothly! God bless you & your little one! :)
  • Contractions started at 2:30 am and shortly after I began getting ready to head to the hospital. Got there around 4ish and checked in, and I was 6 cm and 90% effaced. Waited two hours for the epidural! You have to watch a video and get a bag of IV fluids. The Epi only worked on the right side of my body. I could feel everything on my left! I actually liked that though. A couple of hours later I felt a lot of pressure and the doctor checked me. I was fully dilated and ready to push! I pushed about 20 mins and LO came out screaming! I had a small tear. My pregnancy and delivery were very easy for me, but the recovery was a lot harder that I expected! I used a lot of tucks pads and Epsom salt baths!
  • I went in for my regular OB appointment on my due date. Dd had been positioned perfectly for a month before, doctor felt my stomach and said something didn't feel right, so he did an ultra sound and found out little girl was breech. He said I could take some meds and he would try to flip her, but that doesn't work very well for FTMs, or I could have a c-section. I opted for the c-section. He asked if I wanted to become a mommy that evening and I said ok!
We went home, packed our bags, watched TV and I panicked and cleaned the house. DH and I left for the hospital, got checked in, and dd was born at 5:03 pm!
The whole day was fantastic, expect for MIL. She really pissed me off. DH and I didn't want anybody knowing about the c-section till we were out of OR and doing well. Only my parents, brother and SIL, MIL, (FIL passed away a long time ago) and DHs grandma knew and they were at the hospital with us. We were VERY clear that they were not to tell anybody until we gave the ok. Well, in the waiting room MIL kept getting texts and phone calls from friends asking how the c-section was going. My dad told me that MIL was saying how she told all her friends at work before we gave the go ahead. I still want to punch the bitch.
  • I don't know that you want my birth story.

It took 36 hours due to being induced. I was a week and a half late. Went in on a Tuesday evening, got cervadil overnight. Next morning my cervix hadn't changed, 1cm and soft. They gave me a pill and checked me again Wednesday evening, nothing had changed. So they gave me pitocin about 5pm Wed night. Started getting contractions right away. 2 hours later they checked me and I was 2cm (progress yay!). Broke my water then, and started upping the pitocin, and I made it to 9pm before I asked for the epidural. Didn't get it until after 10pm - that was a total time warp for me with breathing through the pain.

But once I got the epidural all the pain went away completely. It made me super sleepy so I slept all night. Twice the nurses came rushing in and made me turn over because LO's heart rate dropped. Once they reached inside and pushed on his head to wake him up. I thought for sure I was headed for a c-section when that happened. But everything settled down, LO's heart rate went back to normal.

They checked my progress at 7:30am and said it was time to push. I started pushing around 7:45. LO was born at 8:30am. Totally scary moment right before he was almost out, his heart rate dropped again and the doctor was like "Time to get this baby out". I thought again I was headed for a c-section and LO would be dead by the time they got him out. I pushed with all my might and he was born maybe a minute later but that felt like the longest minute of my life. He had the umbilical cord wrapped twice around his neck, ended up in NICU for the first 24 hours while they "observed" him because he was really pale when he was born.

But now he's a happy, healthy and BIG 3 month old.

  • Thanksgiving morning I started having contractions. I called the doctor and he had me go into the hospital to be checked out (since the dr. office was closed). When I got there they did a test to see if my water had broken and found that there was a slow leak. Since I was 39 weeks, they decided to induce me. They started the Pitocin around 1:00pm and I was 1cm dilated/50% effaced. They checked me again at 4pm and I was 3cm. Around 6:30pm the contractions were coming on every 30 seconds and I requested an epidural. They got it in around 7pm and then they checked me. That's right. They put the epidural in BEFORE checking me...I was 10cm/fully effaced. They decided to let the contractions continue to naturally bring DD down for a few hours. At 9:15pm I started pushing. At 9:40pm my little girl was born weighing 6lbs 11oz and 18.5 inches long. My contractions were awful (obviously), but pushing was probably the easiest part of L&D -- thank you epidural. I couldn't feel any pain, but could still feel pressure of each contraction and where DD was.

    Good luck with your L&D!

  • I hope you don't mind the long version! :) 345am Woke up feeling shaky, hot, sweaty and nauseous. I went and sat on the floor in front of the toilet and DH came in to check on me. I just felt uncomfortable and yucky so I decided a shower might help. We hopped in the shower and I was having fairly consistent, non-painful contractions. I wasn't sure if this was labor or not, but I kind of had a hunch it might be. After a while I decided to get out and try to go get some more sleep. While I was drying off I finally got sick and then felt better. DH joked, "Well, I guess you really are going into labor." He was so great in helping me get cleaned up and get back in bed. We ended up getting back to sleep around 5am. 620am I jerked awake and felt a warm trickle of fluid. I jumped up and ran to the bathroom and felt another gush. So I put in a pad and went and laid down in bed. As I laid there, L started kicking, and all of a sudden *foosh* I completely soaked my pad. So I put in another one. I was wondering when contractions would pick up again (they had petered out after the shower and nap). All of a sudden a much more intense contraction than I had yet to experience hit me. "Wow!" DH jumped out of bed and started putting together hospital bags. 8am I called the midwife and told her I was in labor and that my water had broken. She said that since I was negative for Group B strep, I could come in whenever I wanted. I decided I would be more comfortable laboring at the hospital (I was paranoid about leaking everywhere so I wasn't moving around much). 9am We headed to the hospital. The L&D nurses got us checked into a huge corner room. So nice! I got changed into a hospital gown and then hooked up to monitors in the bed. I was checked, 3cm and 90% effaced, -1 station. Once we got all settled in we called our parents and our siblings and they all quickly arrived. In between intermittent monitoring, I walked the halls with SIL and DH. I labored on the birthing ball in between walks. After a while, I was checked again, 4cm and 90% effaced. The MW decided that we should strip my membranes to get things to progress more. Once that was done my contractions got more intense almost right away, but were still manageable. Then more walking to ramp things up. I went back and labored on the ball a bit; hip/pelvic pain was starting to show up with each contraction. I decided things were getting serious and it was time to kick everyone out (My SIL, mom and DH stayed to be my support team). I asked to labor in the jacuzzi tub which was nice. I was able to relax between contractions. At this point, the contractions were getting very intense, enough so, that I was getting on all fours and vocalizing. The vocalizing was strange, I just started doing it without realizing I was. DH was with me providing counter-pressure. I only stayed in the tub for 20 min. or so, as the contractions intensified I got too uncomfortable. I got out and went and sat on the birthing ball. DH sat behind me and applied counter-pressure. SIL sat next to me and rubbed my back and talked me through each contraction. (My mom was only able to sit on the couch and cheer me on since she had just broken her ankle the week before). When the ball got too uncomfortable, the MW had me kneel on the foot of the bed; she raised the upper half of the bed up and stacked pillows on the bed and then I laid my chest and head on the pillows. It was heaven. About every 20-30 minutes I switched between these two positions. Another cervical check, I was 6cm and 100% effaced. Getting closer! I labored for two more hours and contractions were getting more intense and harder to deal with and the hip/pelvic pain was excruciating. The MW did another cervical check, still 6cm. I panicked. I had toughed it out through all that pain for nothing! It broke my resolve and I asked for drugs (I had gone in with the desire to go natural and un-medicated). The nurse put in the IV. SIL was amazing during this time. She helped to keep me focused and breathing when I was starting to freak out during contractions. The MW said that before I could get an epi, they had to give me IV fluids. I didn't want to wait that long so they gave me a 1/4 dose of fentynol (I'm super sensitive to meds). As soon as it was injected it made me feel dizzy and loopy and the room was spinning around. I probably wouldn't have been able to stand up, let alone walk, if I wasn't already in the bed! Good stuff! It took the edge off the contractions and I was able to relax a bit. The anesthesiologist came in and gave me the epi, she was so great about talking me through everything and she was done very quickly. They got me sitting back and comfortable in the bed and my feet started to get tingly and go numb. DH and I napped for about an hour and a half before the MW came in to check my progress, still 6cm. So we decided to give me a little pitocin. I couldn't go back to sleep, so SIL came back up to the room so I had someone to talk to while DH slept a little more. (She and Mom had left the room during the epi placement). The nurse got me set up with the peanut ball to hopefully help me dilate a little faster while I laid there and let the pitocin do its job. The epidural was working great, I didn't feel a thing, the contractions just felt like BH. After a bit I had SIL get rid of the peanut ball, I was getting some uncomfortable cramping in my butt, it relaxed once the ball was removed. Not long after, I started to feel that cramping again and it got stronger. I felt an increase in pressure and I actually had to breathe through it. I told SIL to get the MW. We woke DH up as the MW came in and did a cervical check, sure enough...10cm and 100% effaced! Time to push! (It had been about an hour since my nap.) SIL and DH held my legs while I pushed. My epi was perfect in the sense that I could (for the most part) feel when I needed to push. It felt good to push, knowing that I was nearing the end. I was able to get 3-4 pushes in during each contraction. It seemed to take forever and I was getting tired. While I was pushing the MW was doing perineal massage. That was super weird! The nurse told me to pull my legs back farther to make room for her head because she was huge! (the MW had predicted LO to be about 7 1/2lbs.) I pushed hard and felt the "ring of fire", even with the epi that hurt! It took a few pushes to get her head out. She had her cord wrapped around her neck (it hadn't effected her. LO had had a baseline heart rate of 130 the entire time) which the MW quickly took care of. I paused for a second and then pushed hard and the MW helped to deliver the rest of her body. 109am (just under an hour of pushing) L was born! She was laid on my chest and she was beautiful! 9lbs. 3oz., 21 inches long and 14" head. I ended up with a small 1st degree tear. The staff at the hospital were wonderful and it was such an amazing experience. If I could do it all over again, I would.

  • My due date was 10/24/13. I went into the hospital on 10/28 at 10:30 pm to begin induction. The plan was to insert Cytotec to soften my cervix and then start pitocen in the morning. I was about 2 cm when I went in. As soon as they placed the cytotec, I went into labor. Within an hour I was having super intense contractions only minutes apart. The nurse came and checked me and I had dilated to 4cm.

Contractions continued to get worse until they were right on top of each other. I would finish having one and within 10 seconds another one would come. It was really difficult because I didn't have very much time at all in between to recover. I tried getting in the whirlpool to help ease the pain, but the pain was so inbearable I begged for the epidural. While I was getting my epidural I was getting contractions, which made it hard to hold still. The nurse then checked me and I was a 7cm. I could not believe how quickly everything was progressing.

After the epidural, I didn't feel the contractions anymore, but I still felt intense pressure because DS was so low. By 5 am, I was 9 cm and really wanted to push. The nurse said that DS was crooked still, so she wanted me to lay on my side to help him get in better position. As soon as I did that, he started to go into distress so I would have to sit straight up. I waited for 2 hours for the nurse to tell me I could push, but she didn't even check me again.

Finally at around 8am, a new nurse took her shift and she checked me and I was at 10 cm and told me I could start pushing. I asked how long it typically took and she told me about 2 hours. I could not believe it, since on tv it only seems like a matter of minutes. Whenever I got a contraction I would push and the pressure really sucked, but it didn't hurt. I would even joke around between pushes. I was more exhausted than anything. After a little over 2 hours of pushing, finally he started crowning and the nurse called for the doctor. The few minutes I had to wait for the doctor to get there was torture.

Once she got there everything was a blur. After a few long pushes, he came out crying. They laid him on me and he stopped crying immediately and just looked at me with his big blue eyes. Then he pooped on me :)

He was 8lbs even and 21 inches long. I have a 2nd degree tear and was super sore for a few weeks. It's only been 2.5 months and I can't wait for our next baby (which will be awhile).

  • Anyway, here's my birth story. I'm exceptionally happy that not only was I able to have my second VBAC, but I actually did it without an epidural, something I had wanted but honestly wasn't sure that I would be able to do...but I did!! :)

All day Sunday, 1/5 I was having BH ctx, every 5 min or so. I knew they weren't real ctx, but usually I only had a lot of BH in the evenings, so all day was a bit of a change. I also had some pink-tinged mucus coming out. It didn't look like my past mucus plug, but it was weird. It had been raining all day and that night in Atlanta temps were supposed to drop to below 12 degrees and everything was supposed to ice over. Because of that we went to the hospital around midnight for monitoring. I was 1cm when I got there and they monitored me until around 6am, but I was still only 1cm despite having ctx every 4-6 min so they sent me home.

Monday the ctx became a good bit more painful, but were only coming every 10-20 min. DH stayed home from work and I timed them and sat around being grumpy. Went to bed and woke up Tuesday morning to more of the same. For some reason I was feeling pretty energized, I didn’t feel like sitting around all day again, so I told DH to go to work and I decided to take the boys out to paint pottery and we met a friend for a lunch playdate. I was having painful contractions all morning but I refused to sit around and pay attention to them. However, I changed my appointment from Thursday to Tuesday so I could see if they would sweep my membranes. I was 39 weeks. My appt was at 2:30 and he did the membrane sweep. Within 30 minutes my ctx jumped from every 10-20 min to every 3-4 min. I drove to the grocery store and walked around, contracting like crazy. Got home and within another 10-15 min I was having trouble walking and talking through them. We would be standing and I would typically wrap my arms around DH's neck and rock with him through the contractions.  After 15-30 min of this , I called my parents to come to be with the kids and my doula, Shari Aizenman. DH was rushing around packing things. DS2 was so sweet, during one contraction he said “I want to help” and came up, hugged my leg, and gave it a gentle kiss.  DS1 was a little more nervous and stayed in the other room.

My doula, Shari arrived and the plan had been to labor at home. Since my past labors had been 24 and 36 hrs, I expected we would be home for several hours at least. But she was there less than 15 minutes when she said that my ctx were about 2-3 min apart and lasting a minute or more, so let's go to the hospital! Climbed in the backseat and breathed through the ctx while DH drove. We pulled up to the hospital and the security guard saw me in the backseat and rushed out there with a wheelchair. We got into our room and they checked me and I was at 3cm!! This was an ENORMOUS relief to me...every time I have gone to the hospital I have been 1cm and stayed there for close to 24 hrs before making progress.

From here I pretty much surrendered to Shari and DH to help me get through it. They were both amazing. Shari would get me to move around or get in different positions every 45 min or so.  DH was by my side, letting me either squeeze his hand through each contraction or hanging on his neck while I breathed through them. Shari would pop my toes or massage my legs or back. I had some pretty intense lower back pain and pressure. I spent a lot of time sitting on the toilet, that felt really good for some reason. I also got in weird positions at the end of the bed or hanging over the bed. My mom also came and was there for the entire labor and birth and she would also come and hold my hand and encourage me if Shari or DH needed a break.

Around 6 cm,  my resolve for going drug-free started to cave and I asked for something.  Shari offered a dose of Fentanyl to take the edge off. They gave me a dose and it helped for maybe 1 contraction, but they continued to be very intense and my resolve was really crumbling. I knew it was just going to get harder and I didn't feel like I had the energy to continue so I asked for the epi. Here is where Shari got a little tricky though ;) They told me I had to have a bag of IV fluids before I could have the epi, and then she asked the nurse to put the bag on 1/4 speed so it would take a long time to go in. By the time the IV bag was finished, I was 8cm and in a pretty deep hypnotic state thanks to DH and his amazing Hypnobirthing skills!! I think I had been moaning "Ow" during the contractions so Shari suggested that I focus on the word "OUT" and I moaned that through all of my contractions towards the end of labor.

When Shari asked if I still wanted the epidural I actually said no because I was so close and DH was seriously doing magic tricks keeping me extraordinarily relaxed and hypnotized.  I was sitting in my bed but she had rigged it up so it felt like I was on this throne of pillows. Then I just felt like pushing and I guess I started to do it involuntarily. Shari said, "Amy, are you pushing right now?" I admitted I was. My midwife came in shortly after that and she told her I was starting to push on my own. They checked and I was 9.5 with just a bit of cervix in the way. They said I could keep pushing gently if I wanted to and put up a squat bar for my legs. I had a few pushes but they didn't feel right. I wasn't in control of them and they were very painful. At one point I pushed and felt something pop. I seriously thought I had destroyed something down there but no one else seemed alarmed. DH said later that I probably had pushed his head out of my cervix. They checked again and I was 10 and they said I could push for real. I said I didn't think I was pushing effectively, so my midwife put her finger on me and said "push here." I pushed once and she said "STOP, I need to get dressed" so she could go get everything ready for the birth. That was hard, I really wanted to push then but I was so relieved because I thought I was going to have to push for awhile. I pushed twice more and Shari told me to reach down and touch his head. Then she said, "Amy, open your eyes and grab your baby, open your eyes and grab your baby!" So I opened my eyes and took his little body in my hands and pulled him out of me and onto my chest. I don't have any words for how unbelievable that was. I rubbed his body with my hands and watched him turn from gray to pink and then he started crying. DH cut the cord and he was mine! He latched immediately and nursed right off the bat. Finally my Andrew was here! 11.5 hours of labor, born at 3:37am.

We shooed most of the baby team away and they let me hold my baby for an hour before they took him to weigh him, etc. Everyone was shocked that he was 7 lb 11 oz. DS1 and DS2 were both 6 lbers and he looked small but they weighed him twice to doublecheck.

Andrew is a sweetie for sure, loves to snuggle, has been nursing so well. He's a little gassy but once we figured out he needed to burp twice every time we burped him then that helped. DS1 and DS2 are both very enamored of him. DS2 helped to give him a bath today (he washed his hair) and DS1 just keeps saying "I can't believe we have a new baby!!"

So...that's my epi-free Hypnobirthing VBAC story....LOL, it kind of cracks me up, I honestly never thought I was that crunchy but I have to say, it feels amazing to have been able to do it. Honestly my fear of how bad the pain would be was worse, in some ways, than the pain itself. I never would have been able to do it without DH and Shari though. Also the midwife and the nurse were amazingly supportive as well, so it was a wonderful birth experience, my first with no regrets, just pride and joy, which feels wonderful, especially since it's my last!

  • Well, I've been told by doctors, nurses, friends, and family that I had a "dream L/D"...labored 2 hrs at home, parked at the hospital @ 4:45 am and had Danielle at 7:05. I was able to delivery naturally w/ no meds and had her after only 5 pushes (no joke)! This was our first full term delivery (Mazie was born at 26 wks and sadly only survived 29 days in the NICU...she would be 7 this March). Many people try to say I was "lucky"-I quickly correct them and say I am blessed. We had a tough time 7 years ago and I think through prayer/faith God blessed us with our little girl. Best of luck to you and know that not all L/D stories are painful/scary.

    Danielle is 3 wks/6 days
  • I want to do this but I'm too lazy to type...so let's get down to the interesting parts!!!
    1) 39wk appt we did a growth scab that showed possible meconium and cord wrapped around LO's neck
    2) admitted for induction that afternoon, 11/21
    3) started Pic at 4:30 and acted "cool" and "enjoyed" 4 hours of contractions that built up to 30 seconds apart
    4) around 8:30 I started to tell DH to stop looking at me, talking and breathing. It was annoying.
    5) at 10pm I thought I was dying and was only finger tip dilated!! I asked for the epidural
    6) got the epidural during intense contractions at 12:30am. Dr. broke my bag of waters, NO MECONIUM WAHOOO, I felt super awesome and face timed my mom before passing out
    7) 3hours later I woke up feeling the intense and painful contractions...swore my epidural was broken?!? Had the nurse come and check me and I was FULLY DILATED! My doctor thought I wouldn't be ready til like 1pm the next day so he was at home.
    8) had to breathe the shit out if every contraction, threw up everywhere and begged to start pushing because I couldn't hold LO in anymore. My doc finally got there at 450am and said those beautiful words to me!
    9) pushed "like it was baby #2" according to doc and had that baby boy out in 20minutes!
    10) after he crowned I PULLED HIM OUT MYSELF, as doc unwrapped the cord which was wrapped twice around LO's neck. We did skin to skin immediately for an hour, he found my booby after 20minutes, I could barely tell I was clotting or that doc stitched me up from an episiotomy. Baby just came out so fast!

Good luck and remember that no matter what you will have a baby!!!

  • on 11/7 I started getting contractions around 5pm and they were pretty regular, every 4 or 5 minutes for about an hour.  Then they just stopped.   Around 8pm, DH and I were watching, ironically, What to Expect when you're Expecting, and I was in a lot of pain, so we called the dr and then went in to L & D.  I was checked and was at 5 cm, so was admitted and at about 10pm was checked and was 7 cm.   I was in so much pain with each contraction and asked for the epidural.   Well, they had to wait to check my bloodwork to make sure my platelet count was high enough to get the epidural(I had low platelets my whole pregnancy) So we waited for an hour to get the results (!!), then the anesthesiologist came in.  Here's where it got awesome...   I was sitting with my legs off the side of the bed, having massive contractions, and was trying to keep still for the epidural.  He tried once and went into a blood vessel so had to try again, then he asked me if he had to go right or left.  Um, I have no idea!  This is your job!   Plus I couldn't focus at all on him.  I know he was talking but I wasn't sure what he was saying.   So the second attempt didn't work, and then he tried for a 3rd time and again, couldn't get it in.   I was in the most horrific pain and there was nothing he could do.   I literally felt like I had no control over my body.  They checked me and I was at 10cm, so I started pushing.   Less than 10 minutes later DS came into the world.  I was so tired, I don't really remember what happened after that.  I know that they put him on my chest, and then took him to get weighed, but I remember that my eyes felt so heavy and all I wanted to do was sleep.  It was exhausting, and I can't believe that I went natural.  It wasn't in my plan, I wanted the epidural like I had with DD, but sometimes you don't have control over what happens.  In a way I'm glad that I have experienced both with and without an epidural.    So our family is complete and I couldn't be happier!

    Good luck to you!!!

  • I was scheduled an induction at 5 am four days before my due date-no reasoning. Got set up with an IV and pitocin started around 6:45 am. The nurse didn't up my pitocin gradually..she just put it to the full dosage (terrible contractions!). My OB broke my water with the stick at 9 am and received an epidural around 11:30 am. From there I dilated slowly till I hit 5cm and from then on I dilated quickly. My little angel made her appearance at 5:21 pm that same day!
