Baby fluoride

So here in Hawaii we don't have fluoride in our water other than military installations. The pedi gave me an rx for the fluoride drops. So heres my 5.99 (but I won't be paying the tax because I'm already paying for the drops that aren't covered by insurance) ;) Anywhoozie, baby H doesn't have teeth or even nubs so is this all for not or is this some type of early prevention method?

And for those who read this and are underwhelmed, a gif for you (it's even tooth related)

  • Love the gif but I'm unsure on fluoride :)

  • We supplement with formula and our pedi told us to use filtered tap water because our water does have fluoride, but I know our nephew who was EBF didn't take any fluoride drops and he has a full set of chompers now at 21 months old. He has been drinking water since he was like a year old or so, but before a year he wasn't and his pedi didn't tell them to give him any kind of supplements. I don't know if that helps whatsoever.

  • They help the teeth before they even get through the gums, I believe.

This.  My friend works in a dentists office.  She ripped my head off when I was at her house using bottled water for his formula/bottle.  Got the lecture on why they need it even before teeth come in.  So i started using nursery water.

  • That website is definitely anti-fluoride, so take it with a grain of salt.

I'm having trouble locating the part about fluoride in the book I read (written by a pediatrician) but they recommend no tap water before 6 months (even cautioned against too much tap water for formula bc of fluoride), then after 6 months it should just be a few ounces. I don't remember the stance on supplements but I glossed over it bc my tap water has fluoride in it. Again I'm having trouble looking up the specifics, so I can't quote from the book. Just going off of memory.

I am someone that would trust my pediatrician though, unless strong evidence supported otherwise.

  • We will not be giving DD any fluoride.  We use toothpaste that does not contain fluoride.  We will also decline fluoride treatments at the dentist office for DD.

  • My dad is a retired dentist and always recommended flouride.  When I was pregnant with both of my girls, I drank flourinated water.  They got the flouride through my BM and then when we switched to formula, we used water with fouride.  It does when the teeth are forming (both sets).  My dad said he could always tell when kids had flouride vs. the ones that didn't.  If I remember correctly, the ones that did not get flouride were more prone to cavities.

  • Thanks ladies! I'm gonna talk to the dentist about it but I'm okay with him having fluoride for sure.

I feel like this is along the same lines as anti-vaxers. Fluoride is so incredibly beneficial and you are doing your child a huge disservice.

I find what you are saying highly offensive (and I don't get offended easily).  How is me not giving my child fluoride the same as not vaccinating my child?  Am I putting anyone else in danger??  Do what you want with your child and I will do what I want with mine.

You are setting your child up for a lifetime of pain and infection. Dental decay is rampant is children and the best defense is fluoride used properly.

Adults don't need a systemic supplement since your teeth are already formed. The best thing is to use a fluoridated toothpaste (most are, you have to try to find one that isn't) topically. Also proper brushing and flossing. Be careful with the fluoride supplement for little ones though because too much can be damaging and if they get into it and consume it/toothpaste in large quantities it can be toxic.

  • My mom has horrible teeth (Caps, root canals, cavities galore) and really believes mine and my brothers are so much better because of fluoride treatmen when we were kids. Who knows, but as long as you aren't giving too much to your child, it can't hurt.

Thanks! We moved here right before lo was born and I was actually surprised to find out no fluoride in the water. Pedi prescribed a vitamin for lo that has a small amount of fluoride in it.
