Baby Bedding

Do you think it would be hard to sew baby bedding?  Just the bumper and quilt part.  Surely not right?  I am a beginner-intermediate in my sewing skills.

Both of those things are SIDS risks when put in a crib with an infant. If you really want to do it I would just suggest that you know how to sew so there is no strangulation risk from lose threads or fabric coming apart at seams.

  • I've been sewing since I was in the 3rd grade.  In my opinion, of all the baby bedding you could choose to sew yourself, the bumper and quilt would be the most involved.  They are not impossible but they would be the hardest of the items.  The bumpers normally have piping which some find difficult to work with.  I have seen that they have the correct sized inserts for them at fabric stores.  My mom is making a baby quilt (for use later).  She pieces the entire thing together, then sews it, and she does the quilting via hand-stitching.

Like @amoot890, I am making my own crib sheets, crib skirt, curtains, and changing pad covers.

  • @joules235 I love that blanket you are planning to make for DD! I might have to make one! Bonus points for the link being a tutorial.

I knew I would get a few comments about the bumper being a safety hazard. Honest and serious question: if they pose a threat, why are they still sold? I've seen some breatheable ones.

  • Crap. I didn't see the other thread about crib stuff. The more I think about it, the more I realize it's really just a waste.

They're pretty easy to make if you're not sewing crazy patterns, I've made pillows and a few blankets.. But like others said, not safe for an infant. You could use them when the baby is older though! I used just a fitted sheet and swaddle blanket. She slept great that way.

I think you could do it! I'm going to try making the crib sheets and crib skirt, and I'm such a newbie that I don't even have a sewing machine :)

(the crib skirt is the same one Joules posted!)

Because people will pay for them and the companies don't care as long as they make their money? Seriously, thats the best answer I have. I know someone on here has said they are illegal to sell in her state, but unfortunately the rest of the country has not caught up yet. As for the breathable bumpers, the AAP does not recommending using those either. I'm trying to find the link I posted on 2nd tri not long ago, but basically any benefit of the bumpers (some parents say it helps prevent limbs from getting stuck) is outweighed by the very real risk of suffocation. Plus when kids get bigger they can use them to try and climb out of their crib and fall.

ETA: And some people use the fabric for other purposes. I know my brother and SIL used double sided tape to cover the edges of their brick hearth with the bumpers that came with their bedding set once my niece became more mobile.
