Serious sleep training--night #1. LO has been screaming bloody murder for 30 minutes and I've been crying for 20. I've been in there twice to try to soothe, only made it worse so I'm staying out. Should I pick him up and start over tomorrow? How long can this go on? I'm crying like a baby here.
Re: Tell me I can do this!
Agree, I would try to wait it out. We did a Ferber like sleep training a few weeks ago. The first night was the roughest as it is hard to hear them cry and to do absolutely nothing for them. THe first night she cried for about 25 minutes. We went in at 5 minutes, then 10, then another 10 and we would not pick her up during these times. We simply told her it was okay, patted her back and if she was standing up in the crib- we layed her back down.
Each night, it got easier. She cried less and fell alseep quicker. Within a few nights, we found ourselves setting the timer for 5 minutes and ended up not needing to go back in. It is great being able to put her in the crib now and she falls alseep on her own within minutes of being put down. We do the same thing if she wakes during the night- not as easy when you want to return to sleep. But I suggest sticking with it. We were amazed at how quickly she improved and bed time is so much easier now.
It only took us two naps (one hour and half an hour) one day and he would only fuss/cry for 10 or 15 minutes after that. I was surprised he learned so quickly. Now he only fusses for a minute or two most naps.
I found going in for any reason made him so mad and he screamed! He probably would have slept quicker the first nap if I hadn't gone in to give him his binkie back.
