Nipple Shield

My DD is 2weeks old. I have flat /short nipples. We have been using a nipple shield since day 1. However, she knocks or pulls them off while nursing. It's getting frustrating to constantly stop and reattach them.
Any advice on getting them to stick better? I've used Meleda and TT brands. Thanks!

I had the same problem (flat short nipples) but I didn't use the shields, I used the Medela softshells inverted nipple kit! I put them on (inside nursing bra) in between feeding and sometimes slept with them on. It helps the nipple poke out more so LO can latch.

I had a great out come with those so I recommend you try it out. Good luck

  • I take a little bit of the nipple cream And smear it on the outside edge of the shield to help it stick better while my son is nursing. I think it helps a little.

  • You could try pumping for a couple minutes before nursing to get the nipple to extend. What I usually did was wet the shield first and invert it, then put it over the nipple and let it pull the nipple in as I laid the flange in place.

  • I used to wet it to help it stick. He still would knock it off occasionally, but not too often. Hang in there, my nipples are flat as boards, but eventually he learned to work with them and we don't need the shield anymore. He'll be 9mo next week and still BFing.
