Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Tummy Time Drama

My son is 10 weeks old and whenever I  try to have tummy time with him he lasts for maybe 5 min tops and then starts to cry hysterically. I have read some things saying that a baby will get frustrated and get upset but with him its constant. I know we are supposed to be doing 40-60 min a day of tummy time with him however its very hard to even get 15 min done with him because of how upset he gets. when my son was a month old he was diagnosed with colic and I am wondering if the pressure on his belly is hurting him more then frustrating him. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do to help make tummy time a more pleasant experience for the both of us?

This is totally normal.  My son hated tummy time until he was 4 months old.  Rather than trying to do the whole hour in one go, try doing it in spurts, like 5 minute increments 12 times a day.  Also, make sure you are repositioning him when you feed him and change him (switch sides) because that can also have an effect on cranial growth.  Our son responded well to doing it while laying on us - i.e. we laid flat on our backs on the floor and put him on our bellies.  I'd avoid doing it right after meals if he's having tummy troubles like that.  Good luck, stay persistent, it will get easier in time.

  • I never went by the recommendations.for TT with my daughter.... she turned out just fine.
  • Those are all great tips. I will be trying them tomorrow! Thank you!
  • They have tummy time mats you can by that have a little pillow you can prop then up on. My LO likes it a lot better than being flat on the floor and last anywhere from 15 to 20 mins at a time. Also when he starts to fuss I flip him over and play with him while he is on his back and then go back to tummy time for a little bit after. He has god head control already and actually seems to lift and turn his head more when he gets a little fustrated. He likes tummy time beat when he is one out chest though!
  • Wow, 60 minutes a day? His pedi said 15-20 minutes a day was enough. My LO still doesn't like tummy time, only now he's learned how to roll back to tummy so he'll do this while on the floor, then get super pissed when he realizes he's on his tummy. Sometimes he rolls back, sometimes he doesn't and then starts screaming.

Instead of doing actual tummy time with my LO, I put him in an Ergo and went for a walk. That's the only "tummy time" he got for the first 2 months really, and he has excellent head control.

  • Our LO has done maybe a total of 15 minutes of tummy time on the floor - ever. We do a LOT of tummy time on our chest, and he can hold his head up by himself now. Granted its still a little wobbly, but not much! We still need to do more floor time, but the point is - don't stress! Do what you can.

  • I realized that it was much colder on the floor where we do tummy time so now I try to do it in other rooms or on the bed. He is moving his head side to side and doesn't "complain" nearly as much.
