Trying to Get Pregnant

NYC - Times Square

Hey kids!

My best friend is turning 30 this weekend and she wants to spend it in New York City with the girls.

We have a few ideas of things to do including going to the 911 memorial and hitting up various old restaurant favorites, but do any of you have some not so expensive, interesting/fun things to do/see/experience in the times square area? Last time we found a museum of sex that was only $15 to get in and was actually pretty interesting, so we're looking for other hidden gems like that.

Any and all ideas welcome!

There are some fun, upscale karaoke bars in midtown where you get a private room for your group and they bring food and drinks to you.  So you do karaoke but only in front of your friends.  I've been to Pulse which is on 41st near Broadway so very close to Times Square and it was a blast.

Also, Lucky Cheng's has a frickin awesome drag show cabaret dinner.  It's SO much fun and the food is decent.  I think they moved locations and it's in midtown now too.  I'm pretty sure you need reservations.

  • Serendipity frozen hot chocolate!  But it'll be cold out, so you may want actual hot chocolate.

Not to rain on your parade, but I lived in NYC for 7 years and this is the only place I ever saw a roach on a table.

:( This makes me very sad... I've never actually been there.  I've wanted one since I saw the movie Serendipity because they look so beautiful.

They have one in Vegas, too.  You can buy the mix to take home.  It's tasty, but not mind-blowingly amazeballs.

Except for the part where he goes to Sbarro.  If you go to Sbarro whilst in NYC......you're doing it wrong.

I friggin' love Lucky Cheng's!!!  So much fun.

Too bad it will be shitty and cold, but get some hot nuts from the first street vendor you see!  Then go back and buy a whole bunch to bring home since they are amazeballs.  And just plain old people watch.  If you do go to the village you will find it provides the best people watching anywhere.

Oh I know. It was a joke. Even though I do think Sbarro is delicious (is that a UO?).

  • I lived in NYC for 16 years.  I advise leaving the Times Square area - it's such a nightmare!  Go downtown to the Village (East or West).  And the 9/11 museum seems like a drag for a birthday celebration (but maybe I'm still scarred from living there in 2001).

For pizza, I like Arturo's in the Village on Houston Street or Luzzo's on 1st Avenue in the East Village or Motorino on 12th in the East Village.  The East Village has bars like every 5 feet.

I second the Tenement Museum.  Or go to MOMA.  Check out Time Out NY for a listing of what is happening for music, museums, etc.

If the weather is at all decent, go to the High Line park.  It's great for people watching.

Does it make me immature that I giggled at "get some hot nuts"...? It's early...
