The party is upon us....

So, I'm a FTM, which I think I've shared plenty so you all probably know haha. But DS' birthday party is about a week away. I have planned the menu, ordered cake, and will be grocery shopping this weekend for the necessary items. Obviously the cake smash is a common first tradition and we're going to do that. But as I've never done this...is there anything else that is usually done for a first birthday that I might do? I'm not sure if I'm wording this right. I've been to enough kids' parties to know how they run. But I'm speaking from a traditional standpoint, I guess, is there anything commonly done at a 1st birthday party in your region or area? I am also thinking of getting a book, and having people write messages to him in the book, and repeating this every year until a certain age I haven't yet determined lol. So when he is older he has a personal library of books with messages from people who love him most.

I know that he's only one, and doesn't even know it's his birthday. But I know. And to be honest, I think it's a big deal. My DH and I survived our first year of parenting, and not all of it was roses and butterflies and happy memories for the baby book. And somehow, through it all, we managed to keep our kid not only alive, but thriving.  That alone I think is worth celebrating full tilt!

Edited for typos.

  • I don't think there is anything else around here that is common for first birthdays other than the cake smash. That is all I'm really planning. Although I do like the book idea!

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • No idea on traditions but I really like how you said its a big deal to celebrate doing a great job parenting for a year. It's an interesting perspective and I appreciate it!
  • We did something similar to your book idea for DS's naming ceremony. We used the book "On the Night you were Born". It will be a nice keepsake!

I also agree that the party is for DH and I too. I feel like we've come so far and have grown so much in a year's time! Cheers to that!

  • No other traditions here. But DH recently said something similar. We were at Red Lobster for a late lunch, using up the last bit of a gift card. The last time we were at Red Lobster, when we first used the gift card, was last Jan, when I was 8+ months pregnant. DH said something to the effect that the 2 of us went to the hospital, and when we left, there were 3 of us. And we still have LO! (Meaning we didn't 'break' LO!!). It was sweet to listen to DH reflect back in a macro sense. I get too wra

  • I see a lot of people say they don't know its their birthday... they might not understand, but dd LOVED her party! She had the best time. She was running around eating everything and playing with her little friends. It was so fun for her. I don't have any tradition ideas, but wanted to say it is a big deal.
  • I'm with you, @dublinmama. (Shocker, I know.) We're going all out for his party. We are having a photo of DS in a frame that all of his guests can sign. We got it at Party City. My friend who is helping me with party planning did the same thing for her daughters first birthday. She still has it hanging up in her room because she loves it so!

  • We are going all out too. Our party is on Saturday afternoon. I made the decorations myself ( will try and post pics if my phone will let me), between construction paper and my computer I'm happy with the results so far. DD is smashing a cupcake. Seriously can't believe she's one..where's my baby!

  • Yay for going all out, girlies! The way I look at it, I am certain I will never look back when his childhood has been and gone and think, "Man, I wish I didn't throw my kid a smashing birthday party."   Let's eat some cake, bitties!!
