Breaking your own rules

My UO got me thinking about this:

What "rules" did you make for yourself or how you parent LO prior to becoming a mom that you have broken?

  • I wear tank tops instead of shirts because the spit up is easy to clean off of my skin vs changing shirts...

Cosleeping and stomach sleeping. With DS1 we refused to cosleep and I always put DS1 on his back. With DS2 we cosleep and I let DS2 sleep on his stomach for naps.

All of this for me as well

  • Letting him sleep in bed with us and I always said that I didn't want my baby to get used to being held all the time, but guess what, my baby is always getting lots of love and snuggles and being loved ( even if it mean being held!!)
  • I never thought I would co-sleep and now I do it every morning. It saves my sanity feeding her in bed for that last feeding before I have to get up.

Also I'm predicting this thread is about to become a CIO debate once again.... Here we go. Someone pull AmyG's comments and insert them quick and save us all some time.
  • I was all about no cosleeping and we did it for a week. I have kept most of my other rules. I never had a set list though I figured its my first whatever works ill do to save sanity and make baby happy.
  • Ditto to the bed sharing! I've never had my kids sleep all night in bed with me, but the first few weeks they all slept on my chest or next to me in bed, and any time after 5am the kids are welcome to join me. I love it!

  • @liz429 that's hilarious. Now that I went back to read it, that's exactly how it sounded.
  • I didn't want her sleeping in bed with us, but she has since the first day we brought her home. So far I've stuck with everything else.
    Welcome Lily Anna!

Pacifier, some co-sleeping when I'm too exhausted to move.

  • I never bed shared with DS1. Freaked me out. But I do with DS2. I was also adamantly against character clothing, but DS1 gets so excited about it I've let that one slide, too.

  • Also thought I wouldn't dress her in anything overly pink or frilly, but she received so much like this in gifts, and DH loves the girly stuff, so I gave in.

  • I let baby watch tv, usually the cooking channel or disney jr, sometmes I need 5 mins to catch my breath and splash some water on my face or get something that really needs my attention at the moment.

I rock the RNP with my toe while he is asleep so he does not wake up every 5 mins to look around when he is over tired.

I let him cry when I go get his bottle, because I do not like to carry him through the house when I'm home alone. ( Seizure issues)

I stick his pacifer in his mouth in the very early morning because sometimes I need sometime to really wake up.

I swore I would not do all these things but lets face it, we are new parents some of new ones and some of us BTDT. We all get to that moment where we need 5 mins, but hey at least we get through it!

  • I told myself I'd never use the method of cleaning a poopy booty in the sink instead of using wipes. (We're living in Europe) It sounded too gross and my American mindset was not ready to be conformed to this European way of cleaning a new baby. Now we rarely use wipes, only for small poops (sharts) and if we're changing diapers away from home.....
  • I was totally against co-sleeping, but my LO does not like her bassinet soo she's with us a lot! We need to change it for sure. That's really the only thing but I was never stuck on specific rules, just things I was hoping I would or would not do. So oh well!

  • I broke one of my big ones today.... I let DS1 ride in the car seat with his coat on (fffc a little early). My justification was that the temp was 3degrees and felt like -20 and we were only going down the street. I feel pretty crappy about doing it, but with both of the boys coughing I didn't want to expose him to the cold while I took the coat off ( we have a garage but its detached and its full of the racecar and all that goes along with that...)

what did I say that was so good about CIO that it should be copy and pasted? I should really keep track of gems like that to refer to when I stick my foot i my mouth other times.

It was the "baby wise" thread I believe... You explained it well and made a lot of good points!

Ditto on the toe rocking & tv time lol

  • I swore that I'd never have her in bed with us...yeah, that went down the drain the first week.
  • Co sleeping was the only thing i was against, she sleeps with me every night! I like having her close i am more the problem than her!
  • 1. I broke down and used a pacifier
    2. I am exclusively pumping instead of breastfeeding
    3. I don't pamper myself/follow my beauty regime/put much thought into clothing
    4. I don't sleep when she sleeps
    5. I don't spend much quality time with DD1 bc I'm always tired :(
    6. I run to her the moment she cries
  • Cosleeping and pacifier
  • I was going to try to not let LO have a pacifier hardly at all. That went out the window quickly. LO doesn't always have it but it does sooth her. Its just natural for babies to suck.

  • Pacifier as well , sleeping when she sleeps (shits gotta get done! ).

  • We weren't going to let him sleep with us...yeah well he likes to be snuggled. I was only going to breast feed, well latch issues and supply issues formula was needed. I also swore I would do stuff for me and well I think all of us know how well that goes with a newborn.
  • I really didn't want to have to use a pacifier. But that went out the window at about 1 week old. He just wanted to suck and not actually eat and was destroying my nipples. It was a nipple saver!
  • I was so worried about my RNP not being safe bc it wasn't totally flat but DS sleeps with me in bed every night. Love cosleeping and cuddling.

I thought I would be more social but I just want to stay home all day with my baby.

I thought I could never be a SAHM bc I like working and I thought I would be too exhausted but now that I am gettin ready to go back to work, I really wish I could just quit. The problem is that we rely on my income bc I am the primary breadwinner. Maybe with LO number 2 I can stay home...
