Trying to Get Pregnant

Semen analysis results

Hey all!

My OBGYN ordered a semen analysis for my husband at our 6 month mark of trying. I shared my story with my intro a month or so ago, but we're both pretty young- I just have health conditions that need us to get pregnant sooner rather than later.

The results were kinda bad, the nurse said, "lots of little abnormalities." Low concentration, low motility, low volume... We're now onto an RE.

My question is, how bad is this REALLY and what kinds of stuff will an RE do for us? Dr. Internet-Google has me confused.... Should I move to TTTC?! Any advice on what I should press for with the RE? Everything with me has been normal so far TTC wise.

Re: Semen analysis results

  • First, I think it's good you're moving to an RE.  Second, I wouldn't be surprised if the RE ran a repeat SA.  If you are really looking at sperm issues, I believe there are some things you can do (diet, supplements, etc) but I would definitely speak to your doctor first.

I have found 3T to be a wealth of information, there are many ladies dealing with MFI.  The 3T newbie blog (here) has a ton of great info.  I'm sure it's hard, but I would try not to get too far ahead of yourself until you have all the info and are seeing the right doctor, they should be able to come up with a plan for you.  Good luck!

  • Okay, thanks ladies! The nurse is sending us his exact numbers in the mail, so well probably get them by Saturday.

This makes me feel better, and I don't know why I let myself get scared before thinking that there is still some other stuff we need to figure out first!

I'm happy to be seeing an RE too, knowing we're in the best hands in case we need to use fertility treatments!

    Thank you all!!!

Hi @meld42 , sorry to hear about the bad SA results. My H's first SA came back with 0 sperm so I know what you're going through.

I would do a few things:
    1. get a repeat SA in a few months -- many things can affect Sperm.
    2. In the mean time, find a urologist the specializes in Male infertility (REs are great and I would still see one, but the RE usually takes care of the woman, in my experience, and IVF, IUI, etc. My RE told me there was nothing he could do until we got DH squared away and even then I still had to wait a few months to call him back. )
    3. Have your H tested for varricoles, low T, or other hormonal things going on. The uro will most likely do  this. (Side note: if it is low T, don't let them give him Testosterone)

Dealing with MFI is a long process. We first discovered DH's sperm in July and although his counts were increasing they weren't awesome until November. His numbers were also due to being on testosterone.

Let me know if I can help in any way. I have learned a lot throughout our journey.

Thank you for the advice! Good to know about urologist vs. RE (almost everyone here has mentioned the difference!) I'm curious as to why our doctor referred us to the RE- I will definitely ask about that!

I'll probably reach out again when I know exact numbers!

We started at the RE too, but it was only because we could get in there first and I was being impatient. His first SA was in July, RE could see us in early August and uro was in September. I had the work up on me (CD3 BW and HSG) but was told that at the time there wasn't anything he could do until we had sperm and even then we had to wait a few months. We're headed back there next week to see what's next.

Okay, good to know! I am supposed to call on Monday (to the RE) so I will
see what appointments look like for their urologist (it's a whole reproductive clinic, not sure if that's the norm!).

I hope everything goes well for you guys at your appointment next week! I'll be thinking of you!
  • I'm sorry to hear about your difficulties!  Like PP have said, a new analysis could lead to different results, but even if they don't, it sounds like there are still sperm to work with.  I hope everything goes really well for you with your RE!!
