Formula feeding nightmare

So my b/g twins were 3m yesterday.  We are having some feeding issues in this house!  I BF for the first 6 weeks and thanks to mastitis my supply tanked and we switched to formula.  We went stright to alimentum ready to feed because my DS who is 2 had a tough time with formula and was on nutramigen.  So both of the twins have reflux and my daughter has eczema from her neck to her ankles!!  We have tried Neocate formula for her skin but since it is a powder she either spits it all up or refuses to drink it, so she is itchy all the time.  I am at a loss with these two!  They are colicky to begin with but both fuss the entire time they eat, scream when they pass gas and scream when they poop!  Has anyone had a situation like this?  Did they grow out of it?  Should I try another formula?  To add insult to injury we are all sick with colds this week....including the babies:(

I would definetly talk to you peds about different formulas. A friend of mines little one had terrible trouble in the beginning too and ended up having to have a prescription formula to clear up many if the same issues you are describing.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you, feeding issues are rough :(

  • My son is on Neosure and is less gassy than he was on BM alone. I'd talk to your pediatrician and try to find a new formula. I've heard good things about Gentle Ease too.

  • Thanks ladies....we started with Neosure also but because it is milk based it makes their eczema crazy bad...as well as their reflux.  The only kind we have not tried as of yet is soy.  I was holding off on soy because of all the talk of hormones, I may break down and try it!

  • I used Nature's Only Organic Lactose Free with my son, he was sensitive to milk for awhile.  I found it a better alternative than soy.
  • Can't give formula recommendations, but as to the eczema, our toddler had it pretty bad as an infant and still gets it occasionally.

    Things that I found helped:
Clip their nails frequently so when they scratch it causes less damage. This was absolutely necessary or she'd scratch herself up completely.
Vaseline often. The original, not the baby scent (the chemicaks they add for that baby fresh scent exacerbate the eczema). For a few months, she got Vaseline with every diaper change.
Less frequent baths. Once or twice a week. Frequent baths dry out their skin and make the eczema worse.
Use a free and clear laundry detergent and either no fabric softeners or free and clear fabric softeners.
Show the pediatrician the eczema and talk to them about it. There are some prescription creams and ointments they might have you try, too.

    Good luck!
  • Yah I would also recommend talking to your Pedi. The exczema might not be related to formula. It might be caused by something else, like detergent. My twins had awful reflux and the following helped: nutramigen (I assume alimentum would be the same), Prevacid, adding a bit of baby oatmeal cereal to bottles, and not over-feeding, which I had been doing. GL, it definitely gets better. I was in reflux hell for what felt like forever. But really by 9m it was non-existent and after getting the right med it was a million times better.
  • Echo PPs on changing formula till you stop getting reactions (my LOs life changed when we put him on alimentum, wouldn't touch nutramigin, etc) and would add checking into probiotics for the gas and stool pain. All of mine remain crazy gassy - but since starting the probiotics, they've been really regular and there's no more screaming. If you go with oatmeal or rice for the reflux - watch out for allergic reactions (something in both was making my LO react in addition to the formula) and be ready with prune juice for constipation. I'd say for us it works better removing stuff then adding - but I know the oatmeal works for many people... Good luck!
