Body parts

What terminology do you use when you refer to LO's private parts?

I know we discussed this when pregnant, and we all had ideas of what we were going to use. I am wondering now, what you are actually calling it.

I had and do have the intention of using anatomically correct terms, such as penis, but I don't yet. I don't really refer to it out loud yet but i hear myself saying "peepee" in my head.

  • Believe it or not we don't really talk about it too much yet so I have no idea what we are going to call it.... Something to think about as she gets older though!

  • This topic has got heated in the past. I don't see the big deal. My kids don't use anatomically correct terms. Sure they know they have a penis/vagina. They choose to say peepee, privates, and my son has even said "pee maker." I will never understand the issue.

  • We go by bee-she  and girly bits/boy bits and front bum/ back bum.

Ha I thought we were the only ones that say front bum. DD just started saying it and it caught on.

  • It hasn't really come to it yet but I think I will probably use correct terminology and more cutesy names interchangeably. I do want him to learn the official names for his genitals as well as all body parts. But I don't think that will stop me from saying things like tummy, piggies, booty, nosie, or wee wee.

  • I taught my daughter the correct names.

I don't care what other people do though...

  • We say penis and bum.

But DS1 says "pee pee". I'm cool with that. He's 2.
     DS1 8/2011. DS2 8/2013.

  • I have not thought about this yet, but I will probably use to correct terms. However, this thread reminded me of two things.

    1. When my friends and I have a wedgie in our "front" we call it a "frontal". As in, "I can't wear those leggings, they give me a frontal and camel toe."

    2. From the age of 3-8, one of my sisters referred to her vagina as her "pudy" pronounce poo-dee. We have no idea why. No one called it that.

You can't really stop little ones from making up their own names for things. It is interesting to see what they come up with.

DS calls it a pee pee, I say pee pee or penis. LO we say lady bits, or vagina.. I'm sure it'll change. As long as it's something that isn't extremely rude or offensive then I don't care

Eta- and Im talking about DS and DD calling it something rude or offensive

  • Hasn't come up yet. When the time comes it will be "penis".

  • We'll probably be using vagina and penis.

I remember growing up my parents called it a "birdy", no one ever knew what the fuck I was talking about. So that's definitely off the table.

  • We call his penis "pee pee" and his butt is "booty".
  • Right now, we've been going with "lady parts" and "butt" when it's necessary, which it usually isn't. As DD gets older and there's a need to teach her the right names, we will do that.

  • Penis and bum in this house.

  • Right now we just say lady bits. I think we'll probably use "private parts" when she gets older but I figure we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

I had a friend growing up that called it her "china"...I can only guess it started when she was too young to properly say vagina and it just stuck permanently.

  • I saw "privates" right now.  When she's older, it will probably continue to be 'private area' and bum.  For a boy, pee pee and bum.

I often have patients that refer to their child's parts as derogatory terms.  The ones that stick out the most are coochy and cooters (sp), titties, and dicks and, let me just tell you, there's nothing that sounds more uneducated or disgusting than using those terms for yourself, much less your child!  Ugh...sick!

  • My parents always used the words penis and vagina, and I'm sure that's what we'll do. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer, although I thought this was an interesting read.

  • We say wee and hiney, though when he asks I'll certainly tell him the real names.

Yeah I don't get that. A word is a word, its not inherently empowering. Calling it my _____ anyword would be taking ownership. And once you have s designation its easy enough to teach whatever you are teaching about it.
    The entire premise is stupid.

  • Hasn't really come up yet. If we're talking about it in general, it's with the doc - therefore, we call it a vagina.
For her butt, we call it her bum, butt, or butt-butt.
MH did get freaked when we were talking about her "boobs"/nipples in one of her check ups. Haha! He says she's too little to have "boobs" she just has a chest. I think that's more of a "boobs are sexual" stance, and he doesn't want to think of his daughter like that, yet. Meh.
Once older, I'm pretty sure we'll explain what everything is using the words penis and vagina, but refer to them all as private parts. That's what I grew up with, and it seems appropriate.
MIL calls LOs vagina her "pee-pot" and I want to smack her everytime.

    We say butt butt too!

We called our vaginas "cats" in high school. Ugh god. We thought it was so original.

I say vag. Or Vagine (Pronounced Vajeen). We like to keep it klassy.

ETA- when I say "we" I mean "I". I really had no friends in high school.

  • We'll probably go with all of the above. He'll know the 'technical' terms but he'll call it what he wants. Right now they're just his 'boy parts'.

  • Penis and bum.  I read that if you use anatomically correct names (yes, I know "bum" isn't exactly anatomically correct) you'll know when someone else has been inappropriately talking to your child about their private parts because they'll use cutesy names.  Not sure if that's true but it makes sense to me.

Meh, whatever works for you. I don't think the premise is stupid, though. And although I'm not one to hew strictly to their guidelines, neither does the AAP:

"In early childhood, parents can teach their children the name of the genitals, just as they teach their child names of other body parts. This teaches that the genitals, while private, are not so private that you can’t talk about them."
