Hospital grade pump?

If I start out with a hospital grade pump (bc of history of low supply), do you continue with one indefinitely? Or switch to a regular? When? Thanks.

Re: Hospital grade pump?

  • Are you renting the pump? I think many insurance companies will pay for either a pump rental or a pump purchase, but not both. If you start off renting a hospital grade pump you might want to check to make sure switching to a personal use pump makes sense in terms of cost. Of course that depends on how long you plan to breast feed as well.

  • Yes I am renting the HG through my insurance. The insurance says they cover as long as I have a letter from my dr. I plan on buying my own Medela PIP after that if I need to.

  • I rented for a month or two. Then bought the madela swing. I hadn't really had a plan for pumping, but when my DS was underweight and my milk came in late the LC had suggested. Once DS started gaining better, and I got the hang of bf, I handed back in the hospital pump and was able to switch to the swing since I don't pump much.

  • I started with a hospital grade for a couple months then switched to the Ameda purely yours and didn't notice a change in supply.
