AW: Supplementing Whine

After 10 days of stomach issues/not eating/being dehydrated, I think I'm going to have to supplement with formula until I can get my supply back to normal (I'm only able to pump 2-3oz, total, every few hours, so I'm running about 3oz/day shy of what I need. I'm only getting 10oz, and I need 12-14, and my freezer stash is already almost entirely depleted). Logically, I know this is fine, I'm just pissed (I feel like we finally got into the swing of pumping so that I was slightly ahead of the game), and I feel like I failed somehow. Blah. This sucks. Thanks a lot, Stomach Bug Fairies.

That sucks, I would be frustrated too.  I know in my head there is nothing wrong with supplementing but when you work so hard to pump and have a freezer stash its hard to feel like your body failed you.  Hopefully you can get your supply back up quickly and only have to supplement for a brief time.

And on a side note, when I first read the title of the post quickly I read it as "Supplementing Wine."  You can see where my head is.  And I thought, why yes, I do love to supplement most everything with wine!

  • I'm in your boat, except it was LO who was sick, not me.  I should have been pumping extra to keep up supply :( I am pumping about 10 per day now; need closer to 14 per day.  My freezer stash is slowly being depleted (and I wasn't one of those who had hundreds of ounces saved!). I agree, it just sucks to do everything "right" in terms of pumping, BF-ing, even taking all the supplements (tea, fenugreek, lactation cookies, etc.) and nothing seems to increase it for me these days.

  • Hahaha, I wish I was supplementing with wine! Though I'm definitely having a beer tonight with my dessert of oatmeal :-/

  • @Alicia0817 Yeah, me too - I usually do an extra session after she goes to bed, and that allows me to have a teeny freezer stash. Sigh.

And I just went to the grocery store only to find out they had no powdered formula?? WTF?? I'm going to have to check out some other stores tomorrow.

  • This happened to me, too, and while my supply is back to normal, I'm continuing to give him 2 bottles of formula a day. I'm not feeling bad about it, either. He's getting primarily breastmilk and he seems much happier now that he's getting a little extra. It's all such a mind fuck!! Don't worry, mama :)
  • Aw I'm sorry! That stinks! FX your supply rebounds quickly!
  • That sucks. BFing can be so trying at times. I hope you feel better soon and your supply bumps right back up.

  • I'm sorry. I just started supplementing. I put 10-12 oz a day and I need to pump closer to 20. Giving formula has actually made me feel less stressed and has allowed me to sleep more.

Only problem is, I need to scale back my eating to reflect a decrease in output. But I just want to eat all the foodz.

  • Figured I'd update here, just in case anyone's curious. I'm feeling a lot better, and this week, we've wound up giving DD anywhere from 2-4oz of formula per day.  That said, I've decided that I'm going to keep pumping while she's away from me on the same schedule (which is 3x/day), but I'm not going to kill myself trying to make up the difference by pumping late at night or whatever. She seems to like formula fine, she's eating solids so it's not like she's EBF at this point anymore anyway, and I think it's actually going to help me breastfeed longer to not be so stressed about it.

She did suddenly develop diaper rash, though, and I'm concerned that it's because of the casein in the formula (I ordered some that is whey protein only), since she used to have issues when I would have dairy. FX that it's either temporary/unrelated, or a different formula option can solve it. I'll have 3 days this weekend to just BF, so we'll see whether the rash goes away when she's not having formula.
