Let's talk cameras!

I know a bunch of you mamas are fabulous photographers. I'm looking to get a DSLR and have been told to get the canon 70D. There is a special at costco for the camera with 2 lenses and SD card for 1500. Is this a camera you would recommend? Is this a good price?
Recommendations please!

Re: Let's talk cameras!

  • Canon is great and that's a decent price. Where ever you end up buying, I strongly recommend going to an actual camera store where you can talk to somone to really knows their stuff and touch the actual camera. I have the 60d and its awesome.

  • Ditto going to an actual camera store to speak with people who know cameras inside and out. We bought a Canon Rebel DSLR when DS was very young. Its a great camera to have when you're starting out with that type of camera. I am okay with taking pictures, still learning how to use it the best. But a friend of mine takes some great pictures with her Canon Rebel.

  • I so envy all you photographers! Last year we bought a Nikon at Costco and I tried to teach myself digital photography online. I got frustrated, quickly realized I was in over my head, and returned the camera. It's all I can do to take pics with my iPhone. Ha!

  • The best camera for you is the one you'll use - whether it's the 70D or the Sony RX100ii or your phone! Are you already familiar with cameras or willing to learn? I've had more than a few friends buy a DSLR only to get frustrated with it and never achieve the photos the camera was capable of ( and like bebemac, they ended up getting rid of it and were much happier!).

Feel free to use the photography board here on the bump as a resource! It's slow, but we're always looking for new blood :)
  • That's a really good camera and would LOVE to own one. If you've never used a DSLR, it might be a little overwhelming. You could start a little smaller with a Canon t3i or the like. Then you could learn to use it (it's a lot easier to figure out) and always upgrade later!

  • Thanks for ALL the advice ladies! I'm super excited to start upgrading my camera and abilities. :)
I can't wait to go and play with cameras!
  • I have a Canon 60d.  Do you know what the lenses are included in the kit?  My personal recommendation would be to buy the body separately from the lenses.  Sometimes the lenses that come in kits are not what you need/are looking for, and you can buy a separate one tailored to your needs.  I bought my body and three lenses on ebay and they have been great, but 95% of the time I use a 50mm 1.8 lens.  If you can get a body at a good price (even used) and invest in a really great portrait lens, then you are set!

We got a Nikon d5100 last year. I really like it and find it has been fairly easy for me to figure out how to use it (not on auto) even though I have no photography background

  • This thread was perfect timing for us so thanks @melaneejo!

We have been thinking about which camera to buy and went shopping for one yesterday.  We looked at the Canon Rebel T3i, Canon Rebel SL1, and Nikon D5200.  We specifically said we were not in the market for the Canon D70 (more than we want to spend).  We loved the Canon Rebel SL1.  It's the lightest DSLR on the market which made a difference to me as I was holding it (for not even that long).  It came out in 2013 and is the best selling camera at the store we went to.  We can get it for less than the Canon Rebel T3i so we are going for it!

  • I have a Samsung NX 1000 20.3 mega pixels it also has WiFi ability. I have been using it for a few months and love it. I got it at Sam's Club and it came with and extra leans. I am getting use to it so by the time the baby is here I will have a good understanding on how to use it. I did a lot of research on it before I went out and bought it. Plus hoping it will last a very long time.
  • My DH got me a nikon d5000 a few years ago. It's one the best gifts I ever recieved. I love using all the different features, but it also takes amazing pictures in Auto mode.

  • I've had the Canon T2i for 3 years now and love it. I am not a Nikon fan, they are too complicated in my opinion, so Canon was the right direction for me. I love photography and Canon makes taking pictures very easy. And the record in 1080p, so get yourself a couple extra SD cards and you've got yourself a great video camera at the same time.

  • @mrsp419

Which lenses are good to have? I ended up getting the package because it came with the 18-55, 55-250, an extra battery, case and SD card. It was such an awesome deal. Will I need any additional lenses?

  • Congratulations!  I really hope you enjoy it!  Those lenses are both zoom lenses with different focal lengths.  If you did get another lens, I would suggest this one:
It is a fixed lens (so it cannot zoom) but it is great for kid portraits.  I use it almost exclusively, and it is a great deal.

This. I have the t3i and love it.
Same here! Great camera. I highly suggest Canon. My mom has a Nikon and I just don't love it like I do my canon.
