Success after IF

2nd baby shower

So the new girl at work just spilled the beans that they are throwing me a shower for deuce. I had told them I didn't want or need a shower since it's my 2nd girl and I already have everything.
She asked where I was registered and what she should get me. I told her I wasn't registered, and had no clue what to ask for.
We are also a BFing, cloth diapering, BLWing family so I don't need diapers or formula or bottles or baby food or anything like that.

Re: 2nd baby shower

  • Well, is there really  NOTHING that you need?  What about a second car seat or a car seat base?  I bought new burp clothes with each of my kids I think just because my old ones had gotten kind of ratty and I guess I wanted something fresh.  A really nice umbrella stroller if you don't already have one?  Or, my fall back would be gift cards to somewhere like Target (or is there a great grocery store you love for once your baby does start eating solids?) where you wouldn't even need to spend it necessarily on baby stuff but rather on things for your household if they are truly insisting on giving you something.

If you don't tell them something you will end up with tons of pink clothes, stuffed animals and receiving blankets ;-)

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • I don't know my two best girlfriends wanted to throw me one as well but same situation. Another boy and my family would seriously give me major S@it about having one. So I declined and said let's just do a girls dinner night instead. So that is what we are going on sunday. We are reusing all our stuff as well so I didn't feel it's right to ask for anything. But again to each their own. Now if they still throw it and give a gift certificate at work for you then sweet! But I wouldn't feel comfortable asking specifically for things. I just gave the response we will be just using all B's stuff and maybe picking up a few things here and there.

  • thats really sweet of them! i know what you mean, we had one of each so i really don't need anything this time around (not that anyone is going to throw me a shower!).

curiously, what about some kind of a new stroller (double?) that could fit both E and the new baby? Rather than always having to pack two single strollers, you could have a nice double for both!

  • Echoing how nice it is of your co-workers.

I would suggest new pacifiers? (not sure if your babies use them) new burp cloths, a couple new outfits, new shoes (shoes always seem to get trashed) for when she's older? and I love @amd1982's idea of a new stroller!

  • I, personally, couldn't give my co-workers a specific list of things I need.  I agree with the PPs that you really can't say no to a shower now.  They do the same thing where I work - every baby is celebrated.  I would just leave it like, "we're going to be using all of E's stuff but would appreciate anything you guys want to do."  Maybe suggest that you just have a cake to celebrate, then maybe you'll just get a nice gift card :)

I agree with this too. It's so tough. I have my girlfriend asking me right now what I need and it's tough. Nothing to me is a need more of a want not necessity. But again im uncomfortable asking anyone for anything so different for everyone.

  • i do agree with ccam - i would have a hard time saying "oh we really need this." even though you may want a nice double stroller, LOL. maybe just saying that you really appreciate their thoughtfulness and generosity - that you can't think of anything specifically, but even a gift card to a local baby store (BRU, BBB) would be wonderful? that way you can get anything you may need in the future but you're not asking them for anything that's a specific price...

  • I definitely agree that I can't say no now, that would hurt feelings. I tried to make it clear before hand that we didn't need anything so no shower was necessary. But what can I say, they are a generous bunch. I don't think a stroller or carseat would happen, I think small things are more likely. We are going to go ahead and update our registry with the things we need to get, just so we can get completion coupons and stuff. So maybe when they see strollers and carseats, they will decide gift cards are the best option!
Thanks for the advice. I don't want to be ungrateful, but I feel guilty that they want to buy me stuff when we don't really need it.

  • Ask them to come and paint your nursery for you or give you some babysitting time for E so you can have a date with DH! Or ask for no gifts, just a food party at work.
  • What sweet co-workers! I am sure they will figure something out, like a gift card, so you can get anything you might need.

  • Enjoy the shower. Its all about celebrating new life IMO. I would just say you dont need gifts and then if they give you something its just an added bonus. ;)

  • What about some cute outfits? I know you have all of DD1's clothes but maybe a few things that are new for DD2. You conked also ask for books. You can never have too many books. Or maybe a CG to a local place that offers music or gym classes that you can take the new baby to when she is old enough.

  • What about gift cards for things like groceries or places you can get dinner to go? I only say that because one of my co-workers was just saying last week how nice it was when she had her second shower at work that people put money in for gift cards to get groceries and to restaurants because she didn't need anything for DD2.
