IUD question

I got an IUD put in last Wednesday. I expected some spotting but I've been bleeding pretty heavily. The same amount as after my c section. More than a regular period. I was concerned so I called my doctor, he didn't seem too concerned and said to wait it out until my ultrasound appointment.

I just want to know if anyone else went through this. My sister hardly had any spotting when she got hers. But she hasn't had a baby so maybe that is the difference.

Just curious of your experiences.

Re: IUD question

  • I got the mirena and spotted for a month and a half. My midwife said 3-6 months can be normal.

  • I have a Mirena. 3-6 months! So not ready for that.

    At least I'm normal.
  • I bled like a full blown period for a week, then spotted for 5. That was over 10 weeks ago, no period or spotting since. It's pretty fantastic.

  • Ok. That makes me feel better. When I was on birth control my periods were supressed so I'm hoping that will happen again! Ill sacrifice a few weeks for not getting a period again.

I've had it since about 8 weeks pp and I haven't stopped bleeding yet. SO annoying. I've spent too much money on tampons these last months!!

Edit because my fat fingers posted too soon.
  • I got mirena about 8 weeks PP and had fairly heavy bleeding for maybe 3 weeks after, then light spotting for about a week. Then, nothing until last week when I got a light period. My doctor also said that 3-6 months is pretty normal for things to be irregular and for spotting/bleeding. She mentioned that the spotting/bleeding thing is the most common reason women get their iud removed shortly after getting it. Hopefully it gets better soon!
  • I got the Mirena and spotted and had heavy bleeding for about 6 weeks - it varied day by day. Then I had nothing for two days and now back to spotting and light bleeding daily. It's rather annoying.
  • I got the mirena 7 weeks PP. I spotted for about 4 weeks then nothing until now about 12 weeks later full blown period what the eff!!!! It worries me how now I'm having a period.

My question is who had an ultrasound to confirm placement... I didn't. I though that it would be a good idea but my dr never said anything....
  • Hmmm @ssublett09 my doctor told me to make the appt for one month after insertion. FYI I have a friend (I know "I once heard this crazy story" but really) that didn't go back for the u/s and got pregnant because it was dislodged. I would say its worth a phone call.

Sooo what are you ladies doing about sex?

No need for tmi but I'm curious:
    Just not having it?
    Foreplay for him?
    Shower?
    Towel? (Ew?)
  • I bled and cramped for a month after I got mine.

Definitely see about getting that ultrasound! I had a Paraguard inserted and thought everything was going great. When they checked it at the one-month ultrasound it was misplaced and apparently offering no protection. I was practically hyperventilating waiting for the pregnancy test, which was negative. If I hadn't had the ultrasound I would have gone on thinking I was protected.

FWIW I think this is fairly rare though, but still it's worth it to get checked!

  • I had an IUD (Paraguard) placed 7 weeks PP.  The NP who put it in said they'd see me back in 4 weeks for an ultrasound to check placement but for whatever reason when she talked to the doctor she wanted me to come check placement after two weeks (I think because of my c-section she wanted to be extra careful about me getting pregnant again so quickly).

Anyway, I spotted for about 2 days and then it stopped.  My first period was about 3-4 weeks later and it was very heavy.  My second period a month after that was really heavy and the IUD fell out. That was the weekend before Christmas and I still haven't made an appointment to get something done about it...I really don't want to go back on the pill but I had about $160 in co-pays for the ultrasounds and everything having it placed and I don't know if I want to do that all again.  Bleh.

  • @eyris That sounds like a pain in the hiney! I wouldn't go back either after all that.

Holy cow!  I have Paraguard, and my experience has been nothing like that.  I think your NP F-ed up and just didn't want to own up to it to your face and risk being sued or something.  I've just had some spotting off and on for the last few months with cramping the first couple days.
Well the ultrasound tech checked it two weeks after it was placed and said it was all good.  After the ultrasound my OB was the one who also checked the strings and everything and said the ultrasound looked good as well.  So three people confirmed it was okay, and it still fell out.

She did mention that a very heavy period could knock it out or dislodge it so you're supposed to do monthly "self checks" of the strings to make sure they're staying the same length/are there.

I guess I'm just the lucky one with the random period from hell.  FWIW, my period last week, after it fell out, was totally normal.  I think my body hated it or something. =P

  • Ok this may be a dumb question. But, when it falls out you know it or find it right? DH seems to think that it can just fall out without me knowing and I would go on thinking I had it.

I asked my OB the same question and she said she has had patients who didn't know it had fallen out.

For me, I felt the strings sticking out when I went to change my tampon, so it was pretty obvious.

  • My OB wanted me back to "check the strings" about 8 weeks after placement. I go in next week. She didn't say anything about and ultrasound to confirm placement.

I'd think that we would know if it came out...ie see it. But I don't know. That would be a good question.

As far as sex...We weren't. Of the two days my spotting stopped one was DH's bday so he got a nice birthday present, haha.
  • Ok one more question.

We're any of you ladies breastfeeding? Did it effect your supply? (Oop's 2 questions) As soon as I got the IUD my supply tanked and I was freaking out. Then I learned that being on your period could temporarily decrease supply. But if this bleeding is for multiple weeks or months is my supply going to stay low?

I read somewhere on here a suggestion for Milky from needbrands.com. I ordered it and love it. I think it's working or it could just be my body adjusting to bleeding so much. Regardless, my supply is on the up rise but still not what it was before the IUD.

And thank you all for your input.
  • I haven't been told to check it regularly. Maybe this is ultrasound appt topics.

This is why I'm terrified to get the Paragard. I know what happened to you isn't typical, but it still freaks me out.

It didn't hurt when it fell out. It didn't even bother me much having it placed. It's more inconvenient than anything, really. I really wanted it to work out.

I got the mirena at 10 weeks pp and had spotting/light bleeding for probably two weeks after it waas put in, but nothing since.

ETA: I didn't have an u/s to check it, but she did have me come back after a couple weeks to check the strings and make sure it was in place. I should probably try to check them myself to make sure everything is still good.

@sapphire0228 - I didn't really notice any drop in supply when I got it put in. Hopefully yours bounces back and gets to where it was prior to getting the IUD.
