This thread makes me want to cry...

https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12237175/mamas-with-babies-who-sleep-4-hrs-at-night-come-in/p2 I can barely get 2 hours at a time with DS...last night was an hour at a time. I'm so freaking tired, but he's not! So ladies, any tricks you'd like to add? Does swaddling make a big difference? DS hates having his arms stuck inside a swaddle so I've been using regular sleep sacks or keeping his arms out of swaddle sleep sacks. Also, he hates baths and they make him angry instead of calm....but would that wear him out maybe? I'm going to try increasing his feeding amount to 4oz. He's doing 3 now, and it was holding him over for 3 hours...now it's like every two hours he's hungry.

  • DS2 hates being swaddled during the day, but at night it really helps a lot to get him to sleep. It's been the same way with my other children. We use a sleepsack with swaddle band.  The early weeks are pretty tough when it comes to sleep, but it does get better. Hang in there!

  • my daughter is going tobe a month in 2 days and she still wakes up every 1 hour and a half to 2 hours :( and i have a 2 year old so i feel you. im really tired but i manage. i breastfeed mostly but sometimes give formula maybe about once a day. i breastfed my son too when he was an infant and didnt sleep thru the night till he turned one! so this time i tries swaddleing her, she didnt mind at first but now she hates it because she gets super gassy and spits up alot because she refuses to burp, she fights me when i try to, so i use the swing at around 3 am to get her to sleep comfy then she will wake up at 6 to eat. at least i get a 3 hour stretch right there :)
  • Noah sleeps about 3-4 hours during the day but he likes to party at night. The NICU got him on this schedule so I'm not much help there. Have you tried the swing? That really helps on the nights he doesn't want to or can't sleep. His pacifier is helpful, too. Sometimes I'll get an extra thirty minutes or an hour of extra sleep if I pop his in. Hang in there mama!

January Siggy Challenge: When I am done breastfeeding...

  • Try keeping him up for an hour before going to bed. Feed him right before you're ready to go to bed. At night, change the diaper, feed, swaddle with no stimulation (ie: talking) and keep it dark so the light doesn't wake him up too much (the cold wipe will do that!). Don't let him sleep more hours straight durin the day than he sleeps at night so he knows night time is sleepy time and day time is play time. Also, white noise may help out. These are a few tips my friend gave me who sleep trained both kids at 3 weeks. A three week old will want to eat every 3-4 hours at the longest intervals. Although we would all love to get those 8 hour stretches this early on! I'm in the same boat as you, so I feel your pain!

  • Mia slept all the time her first week...this past week, though, she's zonked out most of the day and then up for half the night. She does love to be swaddled and rocked, but we've had to up her night feedings [2.5-3oz. instead of the usual 2 that we do] to get her to sleep longer. We do give her a pacifier at night if she'll take it, and that has helped her sleep longer as well. Hoping it gets better soon!

  • I Swaddle at night even though he doesn't seem to love it. Otherwise he wakes himself up. I have him in his own room/crib so I sleep through a lot of the early stirring, grunting, falling back to sleep, etc. I got 4 hours once. Usually only 2.5 to 3 though. I'm also super jealous of that thread. I swear by letting DH give an evening bottle of pumped milk. I feed, hang for an hour, take a bath, pump, and go to bed, then DH takes the next feed. My boobs don't wake me up, and I get about 1.5 hours extra sleep on top of whatever J gives me that first cycle.

  • The beginning is really hard. DS1 slept 1-2 hours at a time for the first 7 months. We then did sleep training at 7 months with dream feeds. He eventually STTN at 13 months and now he's an awesome sleeper. Yes, it was ridiculously hard, but we survived. I know that's not what you want to hear, but every baby is different.

Fwiw, both DS1 and 2 like(d) being swaddled. We also have an air purifier on for white noise. With DS1, every few weeks I made DH completely take over with bottles so I could pump, sleep 8 hours, and then pump.

Also, I'm mobile so I can't see your ticker. But could you be near a growth spurt?
  • Definitely consider growth spurt as a possibility. My baby can go 4-5 hours between feedings during the day, but nighttime is 2.5-3 max. And it's harder to get him down, so that time gets whittled away even more. Le sigh.

  • Quinn is 5.5 weeks old and has never slept more than 2 hours at night, rarely does during the day too. He only drinks an ounce or so at a time and averages 21oz/day so I haven't slept in over a month. I'm just comiserating.

  • Sometimes babies hate the act of being swaddled and fight it, but then sleep better after. Might that be the case? Also try white noise. Baby wearing might buy you some hands free time at least also.

Hang in there... My first barely slept and I remember how hard it is. It'll get better at some point. Til then, coffee?

  • I'll commiserate! I didn't even know babies this young were capable of sleeping for 4+ hours overnight. I'm delighted when mine gives me 3, which is occasionally. But his average is 2. And he's just over 2 weeks old, so he's started his first growth spurt today, when he ate every 90 minutes or so. It's got potential to be a long-ass night. :(

Make sure bub knows the difference between day and night. Keep daytime naps unswaddled. Don't be ultra quiet or anything because the baby is sleeping during the day. I will wake my bub if she sleeps more than 3 hours during the day. Nighttime, I have a routine, bath around 6pm, dressed in pjs and then I feed her. I then will change her nappy and feed her again. When she is drowsy, I swaddle her (arms out) and put her to bed. If she cries, I take her out of bed and feed her again ( leave swaddled) and place her back into the cot once she is drowsy again. Usually she goes off to sleep. This seems to be working well for me and I am only getting up 1/2 times a night now. She is three weeks old yesterday.
  • I'd give my left leg for four hours....

  • My 21 month old still doesn't sleep through the night most of the time...so I guess I'm already somewhat prepared for being in sleep deprived mode...yay... :-/ can't sleep anyway with my massive 39+5 belly and snoring DH. Sleep, what's sleep??

  • Ok so maybe it was a fluke, but I tried a swaddle, turn the lights off (only used a night light when eating) gave him a bit more food, and limited talking when he was up and it worked! He slept for 3 hours, then 4 hours, then another 3! I'll be trying this again tonight, so fx that it really works!
