Question for VBAC mamas..

So I was just talking to a pregnant mom after dropping of DD1 at preschool.. She was saying that she wants to try for a VBAC, but the statistics for infant death are 50% and 40% for the mother's death... That just sounded crazy high to me! I didn't have a c-section, so I obviously never looked into it or researched it, but that seems off. Are those the statistics any of you were given? I made the comment that maybe it was just that specific doctors stats, in which case I'd change dr's ASAP... (Yes, I gave unsolicited advice!) but I really am very curious.

    What? The only statistic I've heard is that there is about 1% chance of uterine rupture due to weakened tissues from the previous incision.

    Her statistics are crazy. Noone would try to VBAC if there was 50% chance of killing your baby.

    What?? No. I'm pretty sure it would be very well known and VBACs would be banned of half (!) of all babies died from them. And there's no way that those are a specific doctor's stats, because he/should would've had their licensed revoked.

    All testing shows both H and I are perfectly normal. Baby Nacho had triploidy.

    I don't know what it more crazy... those awful statistics or the fact that she was even sort of considering a VBAC given her misinformation. Wow.

    Uh, what?? She think that half of VBAC babies die?! I probably wouldn't even know how to respond to that nonsense.

    Yeah, the fact that she told me she still signed the papers had me boggled! And I guess her BF was telling her how selfish it was to want to try, which I was silently agreeing with, but she is still debating. I was pretty sure she was 100% misinformed, because why would anyone consider that!! Okay, I'm glad that's not the real statistic at all. Makes much more sense.

    @curlingrocks, I have no idea, but she claimed that's what her Dr told her..

    If that's really what he doctor told her, she needs to run. Possibly for her life. I'm willing to bet that those are the doctor's personal statistics (I'm that case, he shouldn't have a medical license) or s/he's trying to scare people out of doing it because sections are more convenient.

    Either way her doctor sounds horrible and she really needs to do more research before ignorantly signing something.

    Right?! I was thinking that maybe her Dr just really doesn't like doing them... But honestly. And if those were actually the stats why on earth would anyone try, AND if you were going to try why on earth would you tell anyone and just look like a selfish idiot? 

    Today she had some gems to say about breast feeding, complete with some select 4 letter words. I'm not a prude, whatever, cuss if you need to... but considering that we're at a preschool AND the preschool is located inside a church I just don't get it. I'll be doing my darndest to avoid her from now on.
