unisom for nausea

Have you tried it? This was just recommended by nurse. If you did try it, did you find it worked for you?

Re: unisom for nausea

  • I had not heard of this and was curious, so I thought I'd see if I could find a credible source. I didn't. But, I did find this interesting article. https://www.drwalt.com/blog/2009/12/09/my-recommendations-for-eliminating-nausea-and-vomiting-morning-sickness-in-pregnancy/. I don't know if he's really the experienced doctor he claims to be, but in conjunction with your nurse's recommendation it's interesting.
  • never tried it... I used the typical saltines,  ginger ale, suffer through...

  • My first OB suggested this but he said the current OTC formulation didnt work so well. I tried the OTC stuff and it didn't work for me. I've been using alternating phenergan and zofran throughout my pregnancy as needed. Alternating them somehow seems to work better than always using one or the other.
  • My OB recommended OTC motion sickness medicine. Hadn't heard of Unisom for that purpose.
  • My doctor said I could take half a Unisom at night and Zofran during the day. They help a little. I wish there was something better.
  • I have taken Unisom for nausea through both my pregnancies and found it to be very helpful.  It was originally developed as an anti-nausea OTC but when they saw that it made folks so sleepy they decided to market it as a sleep aid.  In its original form/dose (not extra strength, gel tab, etc...) it is considered be safe throughout pregnancy.  It also helps with sleep as an added bonus, if that's an issue for you!

Taking it during the day for the morning sickness wasn't an option for me, because of the sleepy side effects, but one at night seemed to curb a fair amount of the yuckies through most of the next day.  It seemed like a good medium between not taking anything and feeling miserable and moving up to a rx strength med.

This is pretty much how the nurse explained it to me.

  • I take it at night and b6 in the morning. I felt so much better I got concerned about the pregnancy. I forgot to take the b6 this morning and what a horrible day.
