Do I really need to call doc or just wait?

A few days ago my right eye started twitching. Then today (my students were driving me batty!) I started getting a cold sore and got a headache. After work in a meeting I see lights (stars) for about a minute. I also got real hot. Now the stars are gone but I still have the dull headache and twitchy eye. My blood pressure has either been normal or low (87/54) when I go to the doc but ladies at work tell me this is my blood pressure. Our nurse was gone so I couldn't check it.

Call worthy or keep an eye on it and call if it happens again or mention it at my next appointment in 2 weeks?
Thanks :-)

  • Im usually the queen of saying wait but personally I find anything affecting your vision accompanied with a headache concerning. Id call.

  • I'd call if it happens again. Especially if your BP is running about what you mentioned. Not that your BP is super low (cause pregnant women get low blood pressure), but it's worth watching. Sounds like you work somewhere that you get to check it if you would need to. If I were you, check it at least once a day about the same time every day. But after you can sit down and relax for a min, not after you've been up and running around.
Also a good thing to look into, at home BP monitors. My MIL has an electric one for when I'm not home to do a better reading on her. They are usually pretty cheap and pretty easy to use. Ask a pharmacist which they would recommend. Track it for a little bit and show your OB what you've been getting if you're worried it may be BP problems.
But honestly the symptoms kinda sound like stress. You can get cold sores from being stressed out and I usually get a twitchy eye if I haven't been sleeping well and getting stressed. But the seeing stars doesn't sound great.
Feel better mama!! It's def worth at least a mention to your OB at your next appt.

  • All of these things happen to me all the time and I always worry but I'm always fine.  That being said, I err on the side of caution and say call.

  • The seeing stars and headache, combined with everything else would make me want to call rather than wait. It could just be low BP but it could also point to something that else that may need to be addressed. Better safe than sorry, I think.

Thanks ladies. The office is closed and I didn't leave a message for on call. I'm gonna watch it and hope it doesn't happen again. Ill def mention it at next appointment even if it doesnt happen again. I can check BP at work if I need to. There are ladies who have had some HARD pregnancies at work (which the principal likes to mention in a "suck it up buttercup" kind of way) and I definitely don't want to be seen as attention seeking but I know I gotta take care of me and LO. Again, thanks for the advice!
  • You can always go to a drug store to check your BP - they usually have those BP stations where you sit and put your arm in the cuff.  Our grocery stores have them too near the pharmacy.

I did consider that but figured if the "symptoms" were gone then it (BP) had probably gone back down/up.
  • Call.  My OB stressed again that that's what they're there for, no matter when or for what.

That happened to me last week btw.  My doctor said that at this stage in the pregnancy, depending on baby's position and our position, pressure on certain organs/nerves/the spine can cause blackouts, blurred vision, tunnel vision, etc.  Their suggestion was to shift positions frequently; don't sit or stand in the same spot for too long, and if you do experience those symptoms, lie down on your left side for a few minutes to allow the best circulation to return.

  • My kids were driving me crazy the other day. My heart was beating out of my chest, pulse was 107, and BP was 82/53. I called the doc since it did it for a few days and they wanted me to come in.

I went in and BP was back up to 100/50's but pulse was steady at 112 so they recommended me to get a heart ECHO but I declined since I've so many that were all conclusive everything was fine and cost $700-$800 out of pocket each!

I got back next week to talk to my doc about it.

It's probably a teacher thing! ;) I had a rough time with my pregnancy with DS!

I do try to move but I have horrible pain in my right leg/hip area. I tend to sit a lot but I reason it with my doc said take it easy last time i went in or if the pain got worse they'd have to consider taking me out of work. I can't do that this early! I needs that paycheck! Lol! I'll call again tomorrow and see what they say. But of course by then they'll probably just say to call if it happens again and to make sure I'm drinking plenty of water :-)
  • I always blow everything off but I would actually probably call the Dr. about that one. Low blood pressure isn't really something to mess with. Hope everything is ok!!

It hasn't happened again so that's good! I'm hoping it was a stress episode.

This, I almost passed out a few times. Get fresh air if you can too and drink lots of water-- if you are concerned leave a message for the on call
