Just seeing if there are any other moms out there that had HELLP syndrome? Want to share your story/how you decided to have #2+/what your concerns are?
I had planned a natural birth center birth with DD...due to suspected IUGR, I had to have NSTs twice a week starting at 34wks to make sure DD was doing ok. The night of 35w6d, I couldn't sleep and had been having TERRIBLE rib pain that whole night and the whole next day, but I just thought I should suck it up, DD was just in my ribs, I'd have to deal with it until the end. Other than that, I had loved being pregnant and had no issues the whole pregnancy besides mild swelling. So I went to my scheduled NST at 36w the next day, and the nurse was concerned about my BP which was slightly elevated. I also told her that I was having rib pain, during our conversation. She convinced the reluctant dr to do a blood test "just in case". Turns out I had HELLP and my liver was failing and my platelets were to 129k at that point.
I transferred to my hospital (thats a whole other story!, and they did another blood test (about 2 hours later) to see if they could just induce me, or if I had to have a c-section. My platelets had gone down to 79k - I was crashing fast. They told my husband (which he told me later) "your wife is dying". So, I had to have an emergency csection, and they almost had to do a blood transfusion. They told me basically that if I hadn't had my NST that day, and had just gone home and gone to sleep, I would have died. I was in denial for a long time, I think because it all happened so quickly. The nurses kept telling me how lucky I was, because they had just lost a colleague and her baby the week before to HELLP.
Luckily DD was healthy at 5lb 7oz and only had to spend 3 hours in the NICU due to some breathing issues in the beginning.
It was tough when DH and I were deciding to have another baby, but I had a "pre-conception" dr visit to discuss my concerns, and they said the chances of me having it again with close pregnancies and the same partner are low (but still there) and I will just have to be monitored more closely, and start coming in for weekly visits at 32wks or beginning in 3rd tri (since thats when it usually occurs). Plus now I feel like I know what factors to look out for within my own body. Praying for a full term healthy pregnancy this 2nd time around!
