Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

new here (long)

So, I’m new here and wanted to share my story and what I am going through at the moment.  I am curious if others have been through similar situations.

My first ultrasound was on 1/16 – at this point I should have been just at the 8 week mark.  During the ultrasound the tech saw what she believes was an empty sac in my uterus – there was no baby – she also checked my tubes for a potential ectopic.  After the ultrasound I met with one of the OBs in the practice.  The prognosis was that this is not a viable pregnancy but wanted to get my HCG levels to understand more and to determine if it was just not viable or a potential ectopic.  On 1/16 my HCG was 10,000.  On Friday 1/17 my OB called to talk to me – she said she believed it was ectopic and I should just get the Meth shot – I told her there was an empty sac – she said she didn’t see that.  After our discussion I decided to do the HCG again and then another ultrasound.  On 1/18 my HCG was 10,700 – due to the high number for HCG and lack of increase between the two draws they suspected ectopic so I did another ultrasound.

The ultrasound on Monday 1/20 showed an empty sac – ruled out ectopic.  However, my HCG levels were at 18,000 - this concerned the doctor on call (I liked him better than my OB).  A different lab ran my HCG but I can’t imagine it would impact the results that much.  Anyway, the OB stated that at 8 weeks with those HCG levels he indicated they should see something and that this is most likely not a viable pregnancy.   He recommended doing a biopsy to determine if there were any cells in my uterus that would indicate a pregnancy was present there – we did the biopsy and it did indicate that a pregnancy was in my uterus and ruled out ectopic.

So – here I am.  Waiting for another HCG draw tomorrow to see if they are going down/up and then to discuss our options.  I have not had any cramping, spotting, bleeding etc.  I just think its strange my HCG levels are increasing and there is nothing in there.

Throughout this process my OB has not been great – she has just told me what to do – not talked to me about what it could be or what my options are.  I have tried to ask the right questions but she doesn’t get it – she just talks at me (not to me if that makes sense).  I have met with a different person in her practice 2x now that I really like, I think after all of this is over I might just switch to him.

  • could be a blighted ovum....might keep your hcg rising.
    Current pregnancy -
First BFP on 1/4/22.  Due date 9/13/22.

Four prior losses, no living children - 1 first trimester miscarriage, 1 blighted ovum, 1 chemical, and one extreme premature live birth daughter who died at 15 days old.

  • Agree with pp. I had a blighted ovum and my experience was similar in that there was an empty sac all the while having "normal" HCG levels and full blown pregnancy symptoms.

I first discovered something was amiss around 6 weeks when my ultrasound was not really matching up with waft I knew my exact date was due to charting. But I was told my dates could be off and/or baby could be a late bloomer. But 2 weeks later at 8 weeks, we definitely should have seen a defined sac and hear a heartbeat and it very obviously an empty sac on the ultrasound screen.

My OB, whom I love and trust, wanted me to wait 4-5 more days to have one last ultrasound to just be extra sure there was nothing there before I made a decision to have a D&C or take the miso. We did that and it was a confirmed blighted ovum.

Although from the 8 week mark it was pretty obvious to everyone, including me, this was very very likely not going to be a viable pregnant, the dr's wanted to be cautious and confirm. Although the waiting and limbo part was the absolute worst, I am glad we did the extra step to confirm so I have no doubts in my heart.

My dr never said the term "blighted ovum" until MH asked if that is what it was since we had googled it. She said yes it was. It sounds like your doctor is pretty confident that is what is happening, but is doing a poor job of explaining.

I'm sorry you aren't getting the answers and explanation you need from your OB during this time. Don't hesitate to keep asking the questions. Having those answers is what helped me understand and to start accepting, which is a huge part of the healing process. Also, knowing that blighted ovums account for half of all miscarriages also gave me some perspective.

Hugs to you as you make this tough decision.

  • I went through the same situation. Normal HCG levels for 9 weeks pregnant, but the ultrasound showed an empty sac. I'm sorry you're going through this. It sucks. I hope you feel better soon. Hugs!

  • I'm sorry for your loss and for how your OB seems to be treating you and this situation. Since you've had the benefit of meeting with another doctor in the same practice, and like the way he handles things, I agree that you should make a permanent switch to him.

    Hugs.
