Cloth Diapering

Ammonia smell in toddler diapers

Haven't posted here in a while! LO is 20mo and we use primarily BG 4.0s. Recently we started laying a pre fold in the diaper, on top of the suede cloth because the allergist thinks his chronic diaper rash is related to the suede cloth and wants to try natural fibers against his skin. In the past two days he's had some truly stinky ammonia diapers, and I think it's the pre folds, not the BGs. After a wash, they're completely stink free. It's only after he pees, but it's strong enough to knock you over when you change him. Is this just part of having a toddler, since they are completely scent free after washing?

Re: Ammonia smell in toddler diapers

  • What kind of detergent are you using? DS2 had amonia issues on his dipes until we exclusively began using Tide original powder. The diapers smelled fine after the wash but something about his urine activated the amonia. He even got amonia burn once. :'(

  • What's your wash routine?

We got an ammonia smell after DS peed, but that was the first week that we did CD laundry in the place where we live now. I had to tweak our routine due to having super hard water. Once I made those adjustments, we didn't get the ammonia smell anymore.
  • Toddler's ON diapers pretty much must be soaked. Try soaking them in hot water for an hour or two before tossing them in the pail.

  • Cold rinse, hot wash with Tide powder, cold rinse. I never see bubbles in the cold rinse.

It's not just overnight diapers. It's daytime diapers too.
  • So the 4.0s are only being used at night? If not, the ammonia will build up, and you'll get the smell even when it's not a heavy wetting ON situation.

  • The 4.0s are daytime diapers. Thirsties fitted stuffed with hemp overnight.
  • I would try adding bac-out to the pre-wash.

Try using warm water in your initial rinse.

And if you aren't spinning out your initial rinse, you should try that too. (Some people don't, and then wonder why their diapers aren't getting clean)
  • So are you only rinsing once? You definitely need the second rinse, if so.

    How often do you wash?

Suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste,
    It all revolves around you.
  • There's the rinse that's included with the wash, then I do a second cold rinse. I wash every 2.5 days.
  • Just chimming in with my routine in case it helps. I wash (or rinse, whatever you call it) in hot water & no detergent first. Then cold wash with powder original Tide.
