Flying and checking car seats

I know there are experienced travelers on the board....

Is it true that most airlines don't charge to check a car seat?  We're traveling to FL in April.  I don't want to bring a car seat on the airplane, but I'd like to have it with us for the rental car.

Delta website says that "Children’s strollers and seat restraints are not counted as part of the standard baggage and therefore can easily be checked for free"  Is this referring to a car seat?

Re: Flying and checking car seats

  • I know we had a Pack N Play travel with us for free, she had her own seat though so the carseat was on the plane with us. I'm pretty sure you can bring it free but maybe send the airline a message.

  • We flew in August and a car seat AND stroller didn't count as checked baggage. So we gate checked both.
  • Thanks for the replies! I will call our airline to confirm.  DH thinks I am crazy to want to bring along a carseat, but I just don't want to risk it by relying on our rental car.

  • i am dealing with this now.  I am buying my LO a seat so the car seat is going on the plane.  But the stroller I will be gate checking.  Just seems easier.  Good Luck.
