Maryland Babies

Kaiser Permanente in Columbia

Open season is upon us and my husband and I are trying to decide if we want to stick with CareFirst BlueShield of MD or switch to Kaiser for when the baby is born in May. I have had great care through CareFirst but I have heard really wonderful things about Kaiser. I know they have a "one stop shop" medical facility at Columbia Gateway. I was wondering if any Moms out there have had experience with Kaiser's pre-natal care or giving birth with their plan? Can you order a breast pump ahead of the birth? Do they cover doulas? Could you give birth in any hospital?

Thanks!

Re: Kaiser Permanente in Columbia

  • I am newly pregnant and with Kaiser.  Though I have not experienced my entire pregnancy with them, I love them.  So far, I've learned each Kaiser facility practices at different hospitals in the area.  I don't know if you can choose your hospital, but I am happy with the one that was chosen for me :-)  Their medical care, integrated system, and online communication is AMAZING. Hopefully I will never have to give up Kaiser!

  • Thank you Melissa, I did end up switching to Kaiser so I hope it will all be smooth sailing with them for the second half of my pregnancy. I am currently trying to figure out what there policy is for electric breast pumps. Have you looked into what they offer?

  • Insurance companies pay for breast pumps?!?  That's awesome!  I'm calling my insurance company, YAY!
  • Yes :) breast pumps fall under the durable medical equipment and most insurance companies (all that I have experienced) provide a breast pump and other misc. supplies that go along with the pump. I know BCBS lets you order your pump before delivery but I'm not sure if others require you to wait until the baby's birth. Either way, it's hundreds of $$ saved!

  • I have Kaiser and was just at a checkup the other day and signed up for the couple of classes you take in the later months of pregnancy with them.

there is a Breastfeeding class (i'm attending in March in Gaithersburg - since that is where my OB is) and the nurse mentioned to ask about the breast pump at that class. One of my co workers (also with kaiser) just had a little boy in October and they gave the pump to her before she left the hospital.

i'm going to be looking into the Pediatricians at the Columbia Gateway soon since we live around the corner. if anyone has recommendations there, please let me know!
