Formula-similac advance vs similac for spit up

My DD is 3 weeks old tomorrow, she has been on Similac advance since she was born and was doing really well. This week she began spitting up A LOT, about 3 or 4 times after every feeding, and sometimes even more than that. It's usually a pretty large amount too. Sometimes it's right after eating, but sometimes it's an hour or so after. I was wondering if anyone used similac for spit up, or sensitive for this reason and if it worked. Also, how do I go about switching? I know some spit up is normal, but I feel like this is too much.

Re: Formula-similac advance vs similac for spit up

  • We started on advance for about a week and a half before we had issues. She was gagging/choking on the bottle, had excessive pooping (9-16 times a day) and terrible belly aches. We switched to sensitive and it worked for a bit, then the same thing happened but she also started spittibg up more. Pedi put her on meds for reflux and we switched to soy. Same issue. Got diagnosed with milk protein and soy allergy and am now on alimentum with no issues.
I would consult your pedi before you just switch. Spitting up is a natural thing but if lo isn't gaining, there's an issue. If you do switch, you can start by mixing half and half of both formulas in a bottle, then increasing the sensitive depending on how she handles it. We actually just stopped giving the formula that was upsetting her tummy completely and went 100% into the new formula and she was fine.

    Hope this helped.

  • we started with similac advance too for DS, my DD was on that when she was born.  We then had spit up problems, tried similac sensitive and similac for spit up, neither really helped.  we were put on zantac for reflux just like my DD.  the zantac worked wonders but DS was still so miserable and crying all the time.  we wound up switching to alimentum and it's like having a whole new baby!

I would contact your pedi first and see if there isn't another issue.  the spit up formula has rice cereal in it, that helps them keep the formula down which should help with the spit up.
