SIDS monitor?

We have one of those SIDS pads with our monitor and I used to love it because it just gave me extra peace of mind, I didn't have to stand over LO and watch to make sure she was still breathing.

For the past month or so though, it has been going off. Not every night, but I would say the nights that it does go off, it goes off multiple times. I think this coincided with her moving around more in the crib at night, which makes sense, but I can go in the room and check on her, and then cut the monitor on, and without having moved her, it is picking up her breathing again. This of course just totally freaks me out because then in my sleep deprived mind, she had quit breathing and started again when I placed a hand on her back (how I tell if she is breathing when the monitor goes off) and it takes me forever to go back to sleep.

Does anyone else have any experience with these? It is the Angelcare monitor. Is there a way to place it under the mattress that will help it pick up her movement? I turned it to the lowest setting (the highest number for lowest detection) last night in desperation to get some sleep. I really want to use it, but I am about ready to just forget the motion pad altogether.

You probably want to play with the settings. Mine has gone off when E moved around too much. I put it in the middle of the crib under the mattress to cover the most area.

I wasn't following what you were saying about the sensitivity setting, do you have it at 1 or the highest number (10?)? If you turn it way down to one it is more likely to go off because it takes more movement to pick her up and if she's moving away from the censor it won't get her. You need to turn it UP in that case. Play around with it though because if I turn mine too high it's picking up random stuff and blinks even when the baby is not in there.

ETA: Mine is set between 2 and 3

It is. When you contact them they send you a fix for the strangulation issue. We have the fix installed on ours.

We have a Snuza. I really love it's portability. Once he starts really loving around at night I am sure we will get a few false alarms, but none so far.

I have it at 5, which is the highest setting on mine but the lowest level of detection of movement. It was on a 3 prior to last night, which is the middle setting.

What did you place the pad on? Just the springs in the crib or do you have a flat surface underneath the mattress that it is on?

This is why I didn't get the Angelcare monitor. Way too many people said that this became a problem when LO gets to be a bit more mobile.

I don't know if you have any money to spend, but I have the Snuza Hero (about $100 on Amazon), which clips onto your LO's diaper and has a tummy sensor that monitors their breathing. It works great. It will vibrate if it senses the LO hasn't breathed in 20 seconds to try to startle them into breathing, and then if it doesn't sense breathing again, an alarm sounds. I got it because I was a wreck about SIDS in part because I know someone who lost their child to it. It gives me peace of mind.

I will have to look into the Snuza, this is the first I have heard of it. Sounds like what I need. I have a friend that recommended the Angelcare, and she had no problems and still uses it with her three year old, which is why I went with it, but it is driving me crazy lately.

No advice on the angel care monitor, though I have a friend who had that for her son and said the same thing. We use a Snuza monitor too. It just hooks on her diaper and we haven't had any false alarms at all. It totally helps give peace of mind.

I just have mine on the wire support under the mattress. I was going to put a solid support under like it recommends but since its been working fine I never did get around to it.

@eyris - I might try to just put it on the wire and see how that goes. We have it on some plywood right now.

I have the snuza. It was great at first but now that my LO is 4 months old, I haven't been able to use it in about a month. Now that she moves around a lot it just slides off her diaper. I had the same problem as you with the monitor going off all during the night. I actually just sold mine on ebay bc I couldn't use it anymore.

We have the Baby Sense crib monitor. It has two large sensors so that even when DD is all the way at the top or bottom of the crib, it still senses her.
