Working/pumping moms

Someone just offered me a used breast pump for $40. I had initially planned on just bringing mine back and forth, but then thought maybe it would be helpful to just keep one there... Any input? I go back to work Monday, so I'm not sure how the pumping at work will go yet. Just wondering if anyone thinks a second pump would be helpful or just a waste of money.

  • You're not supposed to share home pumps. If it was a hospital grade pump you could. Medela isn't a closed system pump, you could have cross contamination. That said if it is someone you are really close to you might risk it just get new tubing, ect. I only know 2 people I would get a 2nd hand pump from 1 super close friend and my SIL.
  • It would be nice to have two pumps so you aren't lugging one back and forth, I kinda wish I did.  But like PP said, I would be careful of who you are using the pump after.

Eek... What does closed system mean?? I'm only familiar with the pump I have, and can't see how if I shared it, it would cross contaminate (not saying it can't happen, I just don't understand it, I guess...). I was under the impression I could just replace the tubes, etc. is that not a good idea???

    *edited for clarification
  • Personally I wouldn't want to use a secondhand breast pump because I'd always worry about cross contamination. I lug my pump bag to and from work and its not a big deal to me :-).
  • I guess I'm in the minority. I'd risk it - lugging this thing back and forth every day is a pain in the ass when you add in my laptop, purse, lunch and gym bag.

  • I have two, since I figured I'd leave one at work. I have yet to do that, though, because it's easier to load the bag up the night before, and then bring it home at the end of the day with the cooler, parts, etc. I have to go to a different floor to pump, so it would be a pain to have to bring both the pump/bag (that I left at work) and the parts and cooler in another bag that I had brought that day.

  • I should add, with DS1 I bought a little cheap single electric one that I kept at home and I did leave my big pump at work during the week, bringing it home on the weekends.  Unfortunately I pretty much burned up that single one by the time I was done so I don't have it any more.  It was nice to be able to just throw the little cooler and my ziplock bag of parts in one of the other bags that I bring every day.

  • No. Don't even think about it. Even with a closed system bodily fluids can find their way where they shouldn't be. Carry your pump back and forth. It's annoying, but the most sanitary option.

Ugh... As I'm researching this now, I vaguely remember looking into it while I was pregnant. I'm not sure how I forgot all this stuff. I think my laziness and anxiety about going back to work and pumping at work got the best of me. Thanks for bringing me back to reality!
  • We have two hospital grade pumps at work so I just bring my tubes and hook up to that one. It is definetly better than lugging the pump back and forth everyday. Honestly, cross contamination never crossed my mind. I might want to look into that but I used the one in the hospital and I am sure a million people used that one.

  • @aml8979 Hospital grade pumps (symphony, lactina, etc) are meant to be used by multiple people, so they're a closed system with no risk of cross contamination.

  • I wouldn't risk it.  I also take the train to work, have to go to another floor and pump 3 times during the workday.  Doesn't bother me much, it just becomes routine.
