Value of tummy-time?

So DS has just remembered how to roll and thinks its the best thing ever because now whenever mommy or daddy put him on his tummy he can just roll right back... And he does, over and over again.

My question - we do lots of other activities to get him off his back now, like sitting and playing in the exersaucer - has tummy time outlived its usefulness or should we keep rolling him back onto his tummy to make sure he gets time to practice crawling (doesn't do this yet) and other ab work?

Re: Value of tummy-time?

  • Soooo glad you posted this. I'm going to be a lurker.

  • Loading the player...
  • How is he at lifting his head and his neck control? Can he sit? That will help build those torso muscles - sit next to him or stick a boppy around him in case he falls, but my ds now leans to a side, catches himself and sits back up.

Although we have the opposite problem here. DS refuses to ever be on his back. We put him down and he rolls immediately to his tummy. Makes for extremely difficult diaper and clothes changes.

  • LO isn't rolling yet, but according to our PT, we're doing a lot of tummy time exercises, not to get him to roll, but to increase his core strength, abs and pecs and his arm strength. He should be able to hold him self up with his arms--which will help with crawling--but also so that he's able to catch himself when he falls forward.

  • I will be a lurker because I have the same question, except that my son doesn't roll back, he just hates being on his tummy after he learned how to sit.

  • Continuing tummy time will help encourage mobility. Your babe will still learn to crawl and walk at some point without it, though.

  • My LO will only roll to his tummy and then acts like a beached whale. Why won't he roll back over? He used to. I agree that tummy time is still valuable.
  • I was wondering the same thing, so thanks for clarifying @fieldpetal

  • I'm going to be honest. My kid hated tummy time, so I never did it. But she held her head up early, sat early, rolled early, crawled early, and is pulling herself up and just started scaling the couch.
So I'm sure in some way it is valuable, but for us it worked out.
  • I also don't make a concerted effort to do tummy time, but LO will roll to his tummy on his own from sitting or from his back and is trying very hard to crawl. So I guess he gives himself plenty of tummy time and if they want to move, they'll figure it out eventually.

Ev does this, too. It's adorable. DH always says that she is trying to swim ;)

@Asbromle, our peanut took about a 5 or 6 week break from rolling back from tummy to back. We also noticed that she doesn't roll well with a recently full tummy. :)
