March 2014 Moms

Ladies with active jobs, lets hear it...

Nurses, Teachers, Retail, etc....How are you coping? Im due late March and honestly I could be done now if I could afford to. Weekends at home I seem to be fine, but work is sheer misery. I'm a dental hygienist who sees about 10 patients a day. Up and down from a chair, cleaning rooms, twisting and turning all day long. I feel guilty from the amount of Tylenol I take just to make it though the work day. Anywho...it's barable right now, but I don't see myself lasting until my due date like I hoped. I'm really just bitching, even though I missed Monday, but I would love to hear how everyone else's work days treat them.

Re: Ladies with active jobs, lets hear it...

  • I'm a teacher.  I sit as much as I can.  I am trying to plan more lessons where I can be seated, although it's not always possible.  And I'm a couch potato when I get home.  DH does it all - cooking, cleaning, laundry.  I'm a bum.

RIP Dr. Irving Fishman - 10/1/19-7/25/10 - thank you for holding on for me.
You made my wedding day complete.

  • I'm a behavior/ play therapist so I'm up and down off the floor, walking 90% of the time, helping kids who have autism learn self help skills as well as functional learning skills. So I definitely feel your pain... I went down to 25hrs a week instead of full time because it's so physically and mentally exhausting. I also am not sure how to make it toy due date, I just try not to think about it and focus on just getting through the current day. If things get really bad, I'll just make sure to listen to my body and dip out early if I need to. But my boss is fine with me playing it by ear the last few weeks- so talk to your boss and see if that's possible for you too!

  • I teach third grade and it is rough.  I have tons of before school meetings that start at 7:45 and school is over at 4:15.  Then I bring home papers to grade.  I am exhausted all the time.  Thank goodness my husband does the majority of the cooking and cleaning (and taking our dog out).  I am trying to work until March 7, two days before my due date.  We shall see if I make it.
  • I'm on my feet for 8hrs and don't stop running, we don't get a lunch or breaks. I was miserable at work so DH and I talked and I cut my hrs at work from 40+ a week to only 24. This has helped SO much! Anyway you can give up a day or two? If not just rest as much as possible. Good luck
  • I'm a medical assistant for a group of brain and spine surgeons and I have to room anywhere from 16-25 patients a day. My body really starts to feel the extra stress around 3pm and by the time I walk in the door (around 5pm) I have to hit the tub immediately. I can't imagine another 9 weeks of this either, but what can ya do?
  • Nurse on a busy surgical floor. I'm on my feet all 8hrs! I'm so unbelievably uncomfortable these last few days, I wish I could go on maternity leave early! But I can't waste my precious time off without LO!

  • I teach kindergarten. It has been really hard on some days, but I try to think about how good it is for me to stay active throughout pregnancy and that helps. There are those moments when I know I MUST sit or relax for a moment but can't. I take a deep breath and keep going while telling myself that after this moment I can rest for a few minutes. I make sure to sit down for at least half of my break too. When I get home I spend time resting with my feet up on the couch before cooking dinner - which DH helps with. I plan to work until 3/21 (I'm due 3/22). Chin up, fingers crossed, one day at a time.

  • I'm a nurse and some weeks I work 3-12hr shifts and sometimes 3-12's and 1-8hr shift it is a nightmare. Always on my feet. Luckily bc I am pregnant I don't have to pull patients over onto stretchers or do the really strenuous stuff. However, there are 4 of us pregnant on the same unit. The other girls are due feb and I am due late march. We don't get much sympathy. It's a busy unit and we have to keep up for our patients. Just tiring. We all plan to keep it going until we go into labor!
  • I'm a nurse on a surgical unit. Man it's tough working 12 hrs. Non stop moving, barely any breaks.... Some days I get so dehydrated, and wait long periods without food. It's a very demanding job! I am leaving at 36 weeks because it is unbearable!!! I may be induced early so it may work out for me and LO but honestly don't think I can make it to 40 weeks!! We are close ladies but it doesn't seem close enough!!
  • I'm a teacher and I definitely have been sitting a lot more this year. I have a great paraprofessional in my room who will walk my class to specials and the cafeteria when my sciatica is really acting up. I am trying to work up until the Friday before my due date, but it is rough! It's also hard not being able to go to the bathroom whenever I need a pee break. I honestly feel like I am just barely making it now; I have no clue how I will last another two months!

  • Can I be the bitch who says I still feel pretty much ok?

Honestly, besides my patience being a bit shorter, I'm still handing teaching pretty well.  Though, if my school ran more the way it does in the western world, I'd probably be screwed.  I'm never teaching for more than 2 hours at a time before I get a break, so it's easier to handle.

  • I have an office job, but I am always incredibly sore on Mondays after spending the weekend doing non-stop playing with my daughter and cleaning. I feel for you guys!

On the plus side, my blood pressure and swelling are much better on weekends and are bad during the week.

  • I'm a personal trainer and I run bootcamps but thanks to spd I've been unable to run my classes. I miss it terribly and had hoped to stay in shape through the pregnancy. It's going to be a difficult transition back afterward. I do daycare during the day (classes were mainly evening) so I'm still on the go 10 hours a day with toddlers. I hear your pain! I'm working up till my due date.

Left ovarian cyst and right unicornuate uterus (will likely be treated high risk again)

  • I'm a supervisor at a drug store.. And I'm so done. Being on my feet 8+ hours a day is killing me. I sit whenever I can and tell them they have to deal with it. I'm going to work up until my due date though

  • I'm a nurse and by the end of my 12s I am waddling. My feet hurt so much!!!! I am due march 9th and my last scheduled work day is march 7th. Just gotta keep going!!
  • I'm a veterinarian working ER. I still have to crawl all over the floor to exam patients, restrain big dogs, deal with bad-ass cats trying to kill me, do surgeries, work 16+ hour shifts on my feet, just like I did before pregnancy. The only part that I struggle with is getting up and down off the floor after examining a pet, but for the most part owners are gracious about helping me up. The belly actually comes in handy for examining nice kitties ... I just sit in a chair and plop them on my belly like its an examining table.
Also a vet!  Worked full time until the day before my c-section with my first.  Super active job and by the end of the day I was done.  Currently I'm working part time, so I wrangle the toddler during the day and then work evening shifts and some weekend stuff.  It does get tiring, and I have SPD again which makes it hard.

Sit when you can, lots of warm baths/showers, and try to get through.  :)
Me and my Kiwi, both 38.  We struggled with RPL and were blessed with Micah.  I'm a full custody stepmom to Ethan!

  • I am a teacher as well and I have noticed that I am so busy at school I don't really notice. But by the time I get home I am a wreck! Especially if I didn't drink enough water during the day! This is not my best year of teaching (by a long shot) and I feel guilty, but I am so much more tired and distracted! Props to those of you who work long shifts! Wow!
  • I'm a bank manager and I'm all over the place. Up and down from a chair. Standing at the teller line. I'm so done.
  • I feel bad for all you nurses, drs, other 12-hr shifters....that's gotta be tough, even if you are feeling good!

I teach 1st and by the time I get home, my legs and feet are swollen and I'm tired & uncomfortable. I'm 33wks this Thursday and I've already hit waddle mode. I'm also getting BH contractions often so I'm plopping myself down anywhere I can and drinking as much as possible. It's tough though because at 6/7 years old (and having an inclusion class) I'm constantly on my feet, helping kiddos. I try to sit and teach when possible but it doesn't work out so well.
I'm hoping to make it until baby comes...but I'm wondering how that's going to happen!
  • Nurse and my new goal is to make it to 36 weeks and then I'll take off. I cramp all day and LO is so low that walking is hard. I still help slide patients up in bed , get them out of bed, Ect. Honestly I've been calling out once every two weeks because I can finachially afford to and I'm miserable.

Yesterday we had a code- shit hit the fan because somehow our code cart didn't have everything in it- guess who was running to get an intubation box from another floor? Yep- have you seen a pregnant lady run- hahahahhaa ( the guy pulled through too )
  • I am a grin and bare it kind of person. Is it hard? Yes. I teach in a classroom for students with mental health disorders so the only thing that had changed is I don't do much in the way of physical management anymore. I am at school 7:30-3:00 then coach about 12-20 hours a week and have grad school one night a week. I have talked to my midwife and she is fine with it... We basically says be as active as you can because it will only make labor easier. I am hoping that is the case because I am as busy as I could possibly manage.

  • I work in an office, I feel for you ladies who stand all day I cant handle that. If I stand for a long period of time I feel faint and dizzy , so luckily I sit all day.; But even sitting I'm still uncomfortable bc she's usually in my ribs and it  just hurts. Not to mention im super moody these days and I work in customer service, soooo needless to say I struggle daily hahaha. BUT I wish I could just be done now and come back in May but we cant afford it !!

Run girl run! Codes are the worst and it seems like we have been having so many more lately. Those days I crawl to my bed after work!
  • I'm the only social worker in a hospice residence. It's a smaller building but those hallways do seem to be getting longer when I'm waddling down to the end just to realize I forgot something in the copy machine. I'm doing okay right at this minute... but I am starting to get edematous in my ankles which is what happened to me towards the end of DS's pregnancy. My hips hurt with the waddling but DH is awesome with chores. I still give DS baths at night but DH is helping me with lifting him. With DS, I made it a week before DD and I simply had enough. He was sitting on my crotch and I couldn't barely walk... I begged for them to let me off. I didn't deliver till exactly a week later... and part of me regrets I didn't suck it up because I would have traded anything for one more week home with DS. This time around is a scheduled C-Section.... I plan to work up until that date. Something about having the date makes me see the light at the end of the tunnel (no pun intended).

Im dyinnnggg. Im a nurse still working 12s and literally dread going in. Yesterday I had a patient code while helping him get from a chair to the bed. Me and another coworker were holding up a 6'3 220lb man as he was literally going down. I know that I do entirely too much physically at this point, but I feel like I have no choice. Either walk around a busy unit for ten minutes trying to find someone to help me or just do it my damn self.

At this point I plan on working up until 38 weeks. Im only allowed the 12 weeks, otherwise I'd go out earlier!!

I'm a hair stylist, I have MAJOR back and foot pain constantly. Being on my feet all day is so exhausting to me at this point. When I shampoo a client my back feels like it will break in two. After work I could care less what the house looks like, I just want to get a back rub and go to sleep!! I question how I will make it to my due date. I'm only allowed 6 weeks maternity leave (no pay, just don't have to pay my rental fees) so I can't really go out much earlier than a few days before baby girl gets here. I keep trying my hardest because my boyfriends new job doesn't start until March 1st (my due date is March 31st). Right now it's just me paying it all. A lot of pressure on me for sure. I just keep praying and Every month somehow it works out.
  • I work in quantitative finance, which my job is not nearly as physically active as what most of you ladies have posted. I do suffer from stress induced contractions when I have to deal with certain people/situations. I feel very lucky that my job has allowed me to work from home and part of my bed rest orders is to immediately remove myself from stress induced situations. :D

  • I am an icu nurse and I feel like road kill after 12 hour shift...

This. I'll be working until the week of my due date unless I go early.....
  • I'm a teacher and I'm really not doing terribly (33+3). My dr told me to stay seated as much as possible and it's made all the difference in the world as far as my swelling and BP goes. I take each day as it comes and really hope I can work until LO comes. I feel like I'll be ok for a while tho.

Run girl run! Codes are the worst and it seems like we have been having so many more lately. Those days I crawl to my bed after work!

I work a cardiac step down unit so codes happen on a regular basis. I miss doing CPR but that's one thing I literally can't physically do at this point
  • I'm a retail manager--work 45 hours per week...except this week since it is our annual inventory, I will be probably working closer to 50 by the time the weekend is over. My biggest problem is that I can tell my feet are starting to swell and they hurt!!! I try to take more frequent sitting breaks to put my feet up, but its hard because then I feel like I am just being lazy LOL. I also bought some diabetic socks from Walgreens (I couldn't find compression ones there), and I think they actually help at least a little. I wore them my past 3 shifts, and then wore regular socks today (there were 3 pairs in the package...now I need to do laundry ha!) and they feel a little more tired than yesterday. Otherwise I'm doing pretty well. I'll be working until the day the baby decides she is coming!!!

  • I teach special education. I have some pretty demanding kiddos, but am coping okay I guess. Most days I come home and can barely walk from the strain of the day, but while I'm there I do pretty well. I am planning on starting leave one week before my due date. I would rather not drive the hour home having contractions if I can avoid it :)

  • I'm a nurse too. I work 3 12s a week. I don't usually feel bad until I sit down to chart. Then when I get back up my hips hurt and I waddle a bit. So far I think I've been too busy to feel too bad. As said above, road kill described how I feel on my drive home. Like others have said I feel like I am still giving all the same care. It takes way too much time to find help most times. I'm hoping to work up until the end. Fingers crossed, I go a bit early.
  • I have a dog walking business and I'm a fitness instructor. I'm doing alright but when I get home I usually take a 1 to 2 hour nap before I can doing anything else and if DH asks me to move before then I give him the look of death. Being active does't bother me, it's just being on my feet for so long the pressure in my pelvis really builds up and I need some horizontal time to recover. I'm glad for the activity, Sunday is my day off and I always feel the worse on Sundays because I spend the day on the couch preparing for another week's activities. I'm hoping to last up to delivery because if I don't work I don't make money.

  • I'm also a kindergarten teacher. I'm on my feet all day. I am teaching from 7:45 to 3:15 every day. It's hard to sit with kinders but I try as much as I can. When I get home I am exhausted and I'm fighting a cold! I am also planning on working till a week before I am due.
  • I run a small retail store and am constantly jumping up and down. Fortunately for me this is the slow season so I tend yo do more office work now anyway, but every time I get up too quickly I have contractions. I also do in home measurements for kitchens, etc and am really getting sick of taking my boots off at everyone's door. It seems nobody has a chair or a bench to sit at! I know it could be much worse, I really am thankful I am not in nursing!
