what's a "high" cervix? and praise for 'taking charge of your fertility'!

thanks to everyone who suggested purchasing "taking charge of your fertility."  i must admit that i was reluctant because i had done so much research, i wasn't sure if it'd be enough brand new information to buy it.  oh i am so glad i did!  we did 2 AIs at home so far and while the first one was a chemical loss (read: timing was obviously good), the second was so poorly timed and i really jumped the gun.  we decided to take a month off after that and really nail down the timing and eat better during that time.  i'm also adding wondfo OPKs to the mix too.  on our second try, i was sure we missed the window for an OPK and kept getting negatives… so we inseminated that night.  turns out, i didn't ovulate for 2 more days.  i relied too heavily on BBT.  the book really opened my eyes to NOT using temping as a means to determine time of ovulation.  i'm excited to practice this month with the wondfo's so i can see it getting darker and then lighter (and i'll likely confirm with a smiley somewhere in there).  (sorry if this all sounds naive, but i wanted to share for any other newbies!)

so!  i've just added in the mix... CM monitoring, and cervix position, texture, and opening.  the book was the first place i ever found detailed instructions (and pictures/diagrams!) on how to do that.  so helpful!  here's my (possibly naive sounding) question...  in regard to cervix position, i know it gets "high" close to/at ovulation and it can be "low" or "medium" at other times.  what does high, medium, and low actually mean?  will my cervix feel to be closer to my vaginal opening around ovulation?  will it feel further away?  or am i off entirely as to what this means?!  :)  this is the last piece of the puzzle for me.

thanks for reading and for any help, feedback, pointers you can respond with.  hope you all have a great week!

Re: what's a "high" cervix? and praise for 'taking charge of your fertility'!

  • I loved that book back when I was TTC like 10 years ago. It uncovered my thyroid condition (the back part on "problematic charts"). Amazing! I never used anything else and always did all components they recommended.

So for me, there was a very clear, distinct change in cervical position. When it was high I had to reach for it, and when it was low it was like "thunk" right there. The first month I remember being shocked at how much lower it was. My partner at the time was fixing to be a nurse, so we had a speculum and she was fascinated at the difference in position, opening, etc. at different time of the month.

    Good luck!

  • I was going to say this, because I'm crass, and because I like to tell it like it is.

Wiggle your fingers around - you'll bump into it very quickly if its low, if its high, it is a bit of a stretch to feel it. High means literally higher up.

  • I agree about TCOYF!

I may have a particularly high cervix (and I definitely have short fingers), but when my cervix was "high," I coudn't reach it at all.  For me, if I could reach it easily I called it low, if I had to reach for it I called it medium, and once it just sort of disappeared it was high.  Every woman is going to be a little different so you just have to take a cycle to kind of get to know it.  I think it becomes pretty obvious once you are feeling around in there. :)
