Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Please Recommend a Stroller for Traveling

We are going on vacation in a few months, our daughter will be 21 months old. I need a stroller as our jogger is too big and I hate the First Years umbrella stroller we have because it pushes horribly. We will be using it a lot, every day, as we will be walking everywhere. Also, we will be using public transportation quite a bit so it's important that it folds easily and is compact enough to fit on the streetcars/buses easily. I have a coupon for BRU, but I still don't want to spend hundreds. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • I love my Britax B-agile. It's pricey (the grey one is $170 on Amazon right now), but it's lightweight, folds easily and folds into a small space, maneuvers well, has a good recline, a large sun canopy, and can be pushed with one hand. I do wish the basket was bigger, but that's the case with most compact/lightweight strollers.

  • McLaren.  They're pricy, but you can usually find them used for under $50

thats the link (i hope it works)
we took it to Orlando bought it just fro the trip because our chicco stroller was too large. My LO loved it. it handles nicely folds quickly and doesn't weigh a lot.... however its a little short for us (but we are tall people: I'm 5'9 hubby is 6'1) and it doesn't have a cup holder. But I really liked it. got us through disney and the outlet malls just fine :)
  • I agree with PP -MacLaren. Or make do with your First Years umbrella.

Do not get a B-Agile or a City Mini if you plan to be taking lots of buses or other public transit. I live in a city and don't have a car so I am on the bus and subway with my toddler pretty much every day. Those strollers push well, but they are heavy if you end up having to fold them and carry them onto the bus (while carrying your toddler in your other arm). I gave up using my City Mini months ago. I would have given up on a B-Agile even earlier because it doesn't have a one hand fold (important since in a city you're usually folding it while on a sidewalk or in a train station....so your other hand is hopefully holding your child's hand).

I actually have a First Years umbrella that I use as my primary stroller these days. I agree that it doesn't push very well, but it is narrow enough to fit through subway faregates and folds down really small so that it takes up very little space on a crowded bus or subway car.

Friends of mine have MacLarens and like them but I'm too cheap. Used ones around here still go for $100.

  • We have a Combi Cosmo and love it - it folds up and down easily, last up to 55 lbs, weigh 13 lbs (and has a carrying strap to sling it over your shoulder).  It also has wheels that can be locked or unlocked for easier navigation.  The basket underneath it isn't very useful because a bar for the frame of the stroller runs underneath, but I carry my diaper bag so it doesn't matter to me.

I've also heard good things about the Inglesina Swift.

Maybe this is a newer feature, but my B-Agile has a one handed fold, and it weighs somewhere around 16 lbs. When I was vacationing in DC without a car, I took the subway (aka metro) a lot. I've carried the B-Agile in one hand with LO on my other arm and my (huge) diaper bag on my shoulder with no problem. The strap that you pull up on to make it fold is actually a really convenient way to carry it. (You do want to make sure that you don't have anything in the basket if you're carrying the B-Agile folded, but I imagine that's true for any stroller.)

OP, it would probably be worth you seeing any stroller you got in person so that you could judge things like ease of fold, weight, etc for yourself. Maybe you'd agree with Aurora_Borealis and wouldn't like the fold or the weight of the B-Agile.
  • Thanks everyone. We are going to New Orleans, and my main concern is the streetcar, which we will be utilizing a lot. There is not much room on them to begin with, and the stroller will have to be stored up front near the driver, I believe. A good suggestion to try them out in person, and I appreciate all of your suggestions.
  • I bought an umbrella stroller on clearance at Target for less than $8 before our last trip. It was light and easy to travel with. I figured if it got ruined, or whatever, we could just throw it away without worry. It worked out just fine. It wasn't the perfect stroller (I am tall, so I had to lean down a bit to push it)... but for the cost.. Maybe keep your eyes out, if you dont think you will use it for much more than this trip. And have fun in NOLA! I went to college there, and I LOVE that city!

  • We also only have joggers so I've been looking for something for a cruise we're going on.  The Summer Infant SD lite Convenience stroller seems to have good reviews

  • Chicco Echo, we used it on our vacation to Colorado and it worked great.

Thanks for the link. That looks like a good option. Since you, too, are looking for a stroller, I thought I would mention that BRU is doing a stroller trade in starting this weekend where you bring your old stroller in and get 25% off a new one. I just got the flyer in the mail, not sure how long the offer extends.
