night wakings

How are you guys handling night wakings?  Usually I will pat/shh/give pacifier and that does the trick.  Sometimes, I will have to pick him up and rock him a bit to get him drowsy enough to go back down.  Last night he woke up at 2am.. I did everything I could think of.. and he didn't go back to sleep until 4.  Ugh.  This was a first for us (hopefully the last, but you never know).  I'm just curious if anyone has had a similar situation and what you've done to get them to go back to sleep.  He's still sleeping now.. it's about 7.. I normally wake him up at 6:30 to get ready to go to daycare, but after a night like that I'd rather him sleep a little longer and let daycare feed him when he gets there.

Has anyone successfully made it through the 4mw yet?  My lil guy just turned 4 months, but I know there are older babes out there.  Just curious.  Hope you ladies had a decent night's sleep!

It lasted about 3 weeks for us, and coincided with teething. She cut her first tooth on Sunday, and slept great the last 2 nights. I think it would have passed sooner for us, but I didn't realize she was teething, so I didn't give her anything for the pain.
    Good luck. It will pass!!

  • LO usually wakes up between 2-3 to eat. If she wakes up at other times she can usually get herself back to sleep in a few minutes, otherwise one of us will go in to shoosh her and pat her tummy.

  • We're still in the 4 month wakeful, but I'm hoping it'll be over soon. But he still isn't 4 months old, so we'll see. The last two nights he's only woken up 3 times and it had been averaging 4-7. Luckily, he's easy to get back down. I nurse him for a few minutes until he's asleep and then hold him for about 10 minutes to make sure he's completely asleep before I put him back down.

  • I try the pacifier 2-3 times. If that doesn't work then I pick her ip and feed her. It takes twenty mins to feed, burp, change, and back to sleep so I'd rather just feed her then try to put effort getting back to sleep. She technically sttn last night but I had to give the pacifier 3 times so I didn't sttn! Lol. Other nights she's up 1-2 to eat. She's so inconsistent! LO is 4.5 months.

  • We have been having wake ups since her shots last Friday. We just go in and hold our hand on her chest with a little pressure while slightly rocking/shaking and shhh-ing. This has done the trick so far...hopefully she goes back to her old routine soon. Our MMSS will be here at the end of the week so we might have a totally different routine/result this weekend. Wish us luck!
  • Did you try feeding him? If shhh/patting/paci doesn't work after about 5 minutes, its usually because my DD is hungry.

  • Friday and Saturday were the first two wakeful nights of lo's life so I can't complain but it was a surprise. Friday night she was up every hour. I tried pacifier, shooshing, holding, feeding, walking...everything and she just was up and fussy. Thankfully, last night she was back to normal.

Normally, if she wakes up I can give her the pacifier and hold her hand for about 15 seconds and she's out like a light. If that doesn't work sometimes I have to change her and she will sleep. Only rarely do I have to feed her because I don't want to start that habit.
  • We're still going through the wakeful, but so far just going in, replacing the paci, putting our hand on his chest or his neck/face so he can feel our warmth seems to work. We do use a MMSS and it sems to help as well.

  • Thanks everyone for your responses so far.  I did try feeding him too, which did not help.  He normally doesn't eat over night and he wasn't giving me any indication that he was hungry, but I fed him a small bottle anyway just to see if it would help.  It really just came down to me holding him and walking around until he finally got tired enough to fall back to sleep.  I've just never had a stretch like that overnight where he wouldn't sleep.. hopefully tonight will be better!!

I don't want to start a whole new post when you are all here talking about sleep already. How many consecutive hours is considered STTN at this age? 3-5 months(ish)

  • Emily wakes at 1am and I feed her 4 oz. If she wakes again before morning I bring her in bed with me to nurse.

A lot of people consider 5+ hours. Since DD goes to sleep at. 7:30, I don't consider it sttn if she wakes up before 4:00. Her first stretch is usually. 5-7 hours so she gets up btwn 12:30-3:00am to eat so that is certainly not STTN to me! She's sttn three times do far by my standards.

  • When my LO wakes up the first time, I pat her back and give her the pacifier she dropped back, and she usually falls right back asleep.  I will do this every time she wakes up until she is no longer satisfied with the pacifier, and then I fed her.  She sleeps from about 9-5, which I consider somewhat STTN, but we still have work to do, and she still needs to learn to soothe herself back to sleep without my help.  I don't know what is technically considered STTN.

And I think I did make it through the 4 MW...

And she is sleeping and falling asleep much better than before the 4MW.  Her naps are not back to where they need to be yet though.

  • We're going through this. Used to be able to just give paci, past two nights we have had to to rock her to sleep. She's been waking every hr (at least) and then sleeps through from around 2 or 3am until my toddler wakes her in the morning. It has been a terrible past few days.

  • Lo has pulled two 12 hour stretches where he slept straight through without calling me. That is what I truly consider sttn. Usually he is up once or twice to eat. But back down in 10-15.

  • I usually end up bringing dd to bed. She's kind of all over the place with her waking. Some nights she will sleep 4-5 hours, others she's up every 2 hours or less. She's really easy to get back to sleep though. She usually falls asleep nursing, which I do laying down. I want to work on trying to shush her and comfort her, or putting her back to bed after she eats, but I've just been doing this out of habit now that I'm really not coherent enough to remind myself I wanted to try something different. Some mornings I barely remember waking up to bring her back into bed.
