No urine sample at dr appt?

Is this weird? I had a doctors appointment today and I just realized they did not ask for a urine sample. Then I thought a little harder and I don't recall them ever asking for one, other than my first appointment! I am pretty sure with my son I was peeing in a jar every visit! I plan to ask at my next visit, but for now just curious if anyone else has not been giving samples?

Do you think I should be concerned? My OB is in a respected hospital so I'm not generally concerned with the level of care, but just seems a little off to me - shouldn't they be checking for sugar/ protein in urine by now? The more I think about it the more annoyed I'm getting!

Now I feel kind of stupid for never asking before, but I'm always just kind of in and out and and hadn't really thought about it - and anyway, it's their job, not mine!

  • They don't test mine. I only had it tested the first appointment (and then a couple after because I had a bladder infection and they had to make sure it was clear).
  • Testing my urine is the very first thing they do at every appointment. If they didn't check I'd definitely be concerned..

  • They don't test mine. Had one early on and will start again around 32 weeks. I wouldn't be concerned.
  • Both my OB and the midwife get samples everytime
  • I'm checked every time, I think for protein/sugar/infection. They caught a UTI I had no symptoms for this way.

  • My doctor told me at my first appointment that I will give a sample every time. They never ask. I just know that once I sign in, I go in the restroom and give one.
  • Mine does every time. I think it's interesting to read that there's such a difference between us.

This. Sometimes my OB will ask to check that I did, but mostly it's just assumed. Thankfully I haven't forgotten yet, usually because I go there straight from work and have to go anyways when I get there!

  • It's a standard at my OB's office to leave a sample before your appt every time.

  • I haven't had a urine sample since my 16 week appointment.  I assumed that if everything was normal on the first few, they didn't need to see any more unless I developed symptoms.

  • I've never had my urine tested at an appointment, with DD or this pregnancy. Like, ever.

  • I've not had to give a urine sample at the birth center, the only time they check is if you think you have an infection or you're showing signs of pre-e.

  • I go to a midwife. And surprisingly I have never given a sample, only the one in the beginning.

  • I give a sample every appointment before I go into the exam room
  • Wow looks like there is a huge discrepancy between practices. My last OB was such a pee checker! I'll still bring it up at my next appointment, but thanks for showing me that it can be totally normal practice.

  • With DS1, I gave a sample every visit. This time, they ask for one every other visit. It makes me a little nervous because last time they caught a UTI when I had no signs.

  • They ask for a sample every time.
  • I had blue cross blue shield insurance with my daughter and that OB checked my urine every visit. I have Kaiser insurance with this baby and the only time they checked my urine was the initial appt. I have wondered why but have never actually asked. I guess I should ask too. However, I love my Kaiser OB and completely trust her & I really don't miss trying to pee in a cup and not on my hand to be honest, lol.

  • Mine was checked only at the first visit. They only do additional checks if other symptoms present. I am not concerned about this because checking blood pressure and asking about symptoms is probably more cost-effective than frequent urinalysis.

  • Huh, weird. I do it every visit at the birth center I go to. They actually have us do the "analysis" ourselves, dip the strip in the urine and tell them if one of the colors is past a certain line. The strips are like $10 for 100 of them, so it seems like it would be cost effective. But I guess maybe there are a lot of false positives? I did get tested early for GD because of a high sugar reading at week 16. I had GD last time, so it wasn't a surprise, but they weren't planning on testing me early until I got that bad reading.

  • Mine does it every time.  When it's your turn, the nurse takes you back, waits as you pee in the cup, tests it, weights you, and takes your blood pressure.

  • I only had mine checked once in the beginning. Now my MW says she doesn't need it unless there are other factors coming into play to warrant it.
  • Nope! I'm not concerned. I trust my docs. If something was up, they would do it.
