My little girl has the diaper rash from hell...nothing I do is working to fix it...we saw the doctor Friday and she suggested we use an antifungal followed by a layer of desitin which hasnt seemed to help and the rash is spreading up her labia :( ideas?

Re: Diaper rash

  • Give LO diaper free time. Expose the area to sunlight for a few minutes each day. Make sure to dry LO off really well at all diaper changes.

Also, I highly recommend using coconut oil as diaper cream.

  • I second the coconut oil, it has natural anti bacterial properties, it's actually used as an anti fungal remedy for a lot of things!
  • Another one for coconut oil.
Have you changed diapers or wipes lately? Maybe she is having a sensitivity issue?

  • Poor baby! :( When DS had a bad rash nothing was touching I stopped using wipes. I bought Viva paper towels cut them up and used just water. Some diaper free time, making sure she is completely dry before putting anything on her rash and before putting her diaper on should help. I've always used vaseline on DD and DS's rashes - Desitin isn't a good enough protectant to let the irritated skin heal. If she's super uncomfortable you could try some Tylenol.
  • Do you breastfeed? If so you can put some breastmilk on it too.

  • I second the idea of just using damp paper towels.  My DS has a rash right now from antibiotics... we have always used sensitive wipes (pampers sensitive and Honest Co) and even those are hurting him right now.  We also have been doing diaper free time, making sure it is very dry (patting with a cloth diaper before rediapering) and coconut oil.  I don't think the rash is going to go away until he's done with the meds, but this is keeping him relatively pain free.

  • @sabrinakurtz I get my coconut oil at costco but I'm pretty sure you can get it at any grocery store. If not a health food store should have it. If all else fails you can order from amazon :)

  • We had the same issue for almost 2 weeks. The topical creams only did so much. It was actually a yeast infection. We used cloth wipes and just a tiny bit of water, gave her some diaper free time, etc. the only thing that ended up working was an oral med the doctor gave her.

  • I second switching to cloth (or paper towel) wipes with just water. We store ours in a wipes warmer with water and a couple drop of tea tree oil. We use penaten daily clear after completely drying with a hair dryer set on low. DS loves having his nads blow dried!

Do Not Do This if it is a yeast rash!! I should have yelled that whole thing. Yeast is fed by sugar...and there is lots of sugar in BM.

Coconut oil. Our food co-op has it in the baking section.. Our local, small town grocery store does not.

  • Like @ravenclaw1's daughter, my DD also had a yeast rash. Our doctor prescribed a compounded cream from the pharmacy that was monistat, zinc oxide and hydrocortisone cream mixed together.

  • I haven't used coconut oil but have heard great things about it. I use A&D ointment on my little girl.
  • Thanks all- I feel like the antifungal cream she told us to give burned her skin or something!! I will be getting some coconut oil and trying that- the doctor does think it's a yeast rash

  • LO has a terrible diaper rash and nothing was working including coconut oil which is what i have used in the past. The Desitin wouldn't even coat on the worst parts. Think it was a bad reaction to switching to Huggies. PEDI recommended Lotromin AF mixed with hydrocortisone 1percent a few times a day on a completely dry bum and then Vaseline Only at night. It's day 2 of this and it has gotten significantly better. Just passing info along. Hope your LO's rash clears up quick!

  • Air her out as much as possible and I find that coconut oil is a cure all. If this is something that happens frequently, I would consider changing diaper brands.

Oh, I didn't want to yell at you for doing it if you didn't know. It just would make a yeast rash worse.

You know how people often recommend eating plain, unsugared yogurt for vaginal yeast infections. It has to be unsugared for it to help. If there is sugar, it feeds the yeast.

It's the same principal for yeast diaper rash. (FWIW, you can also apply plain, unsugared yogurt topically. The active cultures will help.)

  • We just went to the dr and found out that LO has a yeast rash on his chin and she prescribed nystatin which is an anti fungal cream. She told us it was good for diaper rashes as well. We also use coconut oil.

  • So it looks like she had a Nast reaction to the micanozale antifungal... It burned her skin! The actual diaper rash seems to have cleared but now we're dealing with this burn :( poor baby
