Help! Any ideas?

LO is 6 weeks and has normal baby acne, but in the past week has been developing rashy patches on his face, a little bit on his neck and shoulders. They aren't scaly and look similar to hives . Last night when I got up to nurse him it looked pretty bad; very red blotches over his eyelids and other various spots on his face. It seemed to fade over the course of a half hour but since then comes back, then fades again slightly.

I haven't changed our detergent. I don't wear perfumes or put lotions on him. It's not baby acne. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I'm feeling pretty helpless and can't see the pedi until the morning. LO seems very uncomfy. :( I thought maybe heat rash or an allergy? It's not terribly hot out but it seemed slightly better when I stripped him down. And it seems to get worse when I nurse him (bf).

  • Yup I just went to the pedi too with what sounds similar. Said it was just acne, no rash.

  • We went to the pedi b/c LO had something similar to what you described. She said it was a rash related to craddle cap...I can't remember what it is called. She said to use an over the counter 1% hydrocortizone cream. We did and it cleared it up perfectly!
  • It could be acne; but Does it just appear and then go away half an hour later like that?

Ours came and went (the rash).
  • This is exactly what was going on with my little girl. I was worried because it was all around her eyes and clearly bothering her. The pediatrician said she could have a dairy allergy. I've cut dairy out of my diet and it's gotten WAY better. She said it didn't quite fit baby acne.

  • Also we did .5 hydrocortisone with aquaphor two times a day for a couple days

I have a feeling I need to cut dairy out of my diet for several reasons... I just don't know wtf I will eat!?!! How are you managing this?

    I love cheese.
Yes - no cheese is the worst. The doc said I need to keep doing it for a couple more weeks until her skin is totally clear and then slowly add it back to see if she breaks out again. I drink almond milk and was reminded at her two month appt today that I can still have goat cheese and manchego, which I love. I also ate like 10 Oreos just now. It sucks but it broke my heart to see her all rashy so it's obviously worth it.

  • Ugh yes I was doing dairy free but stopped when we thought it was heat rash. We already drink almond milk and FYI, almond breeze makes an almond milk iced mocha coffee.

  • That sounds just like what my LO started having around 5-6 weeks. I think (based on my research on the interwebz and consult with Dr Google) it was miliaria rubra ("prickly heat") caused by their underdeveloped sweat glands. It would be little bright red spots or splotches on her cheeks, neck, and sometimes shoulders. It would come up and go away very quickly, and seemed to be worse when she would cry and get better after she calmed down. It also looked worse on the cheek that would be against me when she nursed and would go away shortly after nursing. It looked pretty bad on her neck at times, but everything I read said it was completely normal. She's now 8 weeks and just occasionally has a light rash on her cheeks.

Seborrheic dermatitis.,, very common in babies. I actually get it too, in the crease around my nose and in my eyebrows, red itchy flaky skin, I use hc cream on it too
