Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Sunday schedule for churchgoers

I have finally gotten my DD on a schedule and she goes down for a nap everyday at 10 am. I love having a more predictable schedule, but I can't figure out how to make Sundays work. Our church has two services at 9:30 am and 11:00 am. DD won't sleep in the nursery at church, she actually isn't a fan of the nursery at all. With a 10am nap time, how can I adjust things to make one of the church services? I would love to hear how some other moms adjust their schedules for church. Any advice is appreciated.

Re: Sunday schedule for churchgoers

  • I'm dealing with the same problem. DD naps around 10 and the service (only one at the moment) is at 10:30. With her teething, I'm not about the wake her for church. So far, we just haven't really been going....

  • I do more of a baby works with my schedule approach. My husband is on the worship team so we get to church at 7:30 and are there until around12:30. Some Sundays she naps some she doesn't. If she doesn't she gets a nap when we get home. I feel like church is important so if she is cranky later it is the price I pay.

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • DS can be pretty flexible. I can typically count on 3hr awake periods before a nap. We have a lot of mass times to choose from, but typically go to 11 (need to leave at 10:30). He usually takes a nap before we leave, but sometimes we have to wake him early. If that happens, he'll usually take a catnap in the car on the way home. Bad days are when I know he's going to need a nap during mass. He usually just ends up having a meltdown towards the end, and falls asleep in the car. I'd probably just go to the 11.
  • We've been struggling with this too. So far we've had the best luck with putting her down early and waking her to leave on time. Our times are a bit different, DD's normal nap is 9:30-10:30 and our mass is at 10, so I put her down at 9 dressed and ready to go so we can wake her up at 9:45 and put her right in the car. I guess it depends how far you have to drive, but I'd probably try putting her down at 9:30 and waking her to go to the 11:00 service.

  • Same schedule here. I typically keep Gwen with me at church. She will nurse and fall asleep about halfway through the service, but she is a peach of a baby - I never would have been able to manage that with my other 2 kids :) Hope you find something that works!
  • Are you a core member of your church?  If not the easiest thing would be to find a different church with different mass times.

We are core members of our church and need to be there each week for various roles.  Our daughter just kinda flows with it...she used to fall asleep in the baby carrier every mass.  Now at 10 months she is too busy smiling at everyone and walking all over the place to sleep but crashed in the car afterwards.

I would just do the 9:30 mass and have your daughter sleep in car afterwards.  It should be enough to get her through until next nap.  Scheduling is great but teaching them to be adaptable is important too.

  • Can you not keep her with you? I don't know how things are at your church, but at ours all the kids are in the service the whole time, so DD just sleeps in the wrap. Or not, haha. Lately she's been too stimulated so she sleeps in the car on the way home but we have a long drive so that works. You could always do as PP suggested and fine a service at a church that works for y'all for now. :-)

  • We go to 8 service and then ss at 9:15. Dd goes to the nursery most of the time during the service. Then I duck out during the last 5 minutes to get her. She will nurse and then I bring her in Sunday school with me. She plays for a few minutes and climbes up on me for a nap. Our class is small and they all have kids. At the beginning I would always leave when she would get disruptive. They all told me to just stay. She wasn't bothering anyone.

  • Our church used to go from 9-noon and that was hard for us because sometimes DS sleeps until 10am. (Or wakes up and takes a nap at 9 until 10.)

Now our church goes from 12:30-3:30 and we just skip the 2pm nap all together and go for an early bedtime.

We're not big on schedules. And, yes, it is a problem. But that's what we do.

  • Our daughter takes a nap from 10 - 11:30 and our services are from 9-10:30 and 11-12:30 so neither is convenient.  We got to the earlier service since she doesn't eat during that time.  Sundays are rough as she usually misses that nap.  We do have nearly a 45 minute drive home from church so somtimes she will fall asleep and take a short nap.  We usually get a decent nap in the afternoon, but we do put her down a little earlier than normal if she is really tired.  It is the one day a week she is off her schedule and it is totally worth it to be at church.  I figure a few more months and she will not be taking a morning nap anymore.  She does get tired in the nursery, but it does help that she is occupied.
  • My service runs from 9:30 - 10:30, but I'm in choir, so I have to be there closer to 8:50 to get him dropped off in the nursery and get to morning rehearsal, then after, it's derobing and back to the nursery, so we don't get home until typically 11ish.

It's a problem, I won't lie.  He usually naps around 9:30, but the nursery is full of 3 month-2 year olds and it's loud, so he can't sleep.  I put him down as soon as we get home, but it throws off the whole day.  It's important to me, though, and I'm willing to put up with his grumpies to keep that commitment.

  • The rev. Canon gave us a 3 yr pass so to speak lol she said "we know it's hard with naps so don't feel like you HAVE to come"...
  • We have an 8:00 service and ours usually wakes up around 7:30 for me to take her to daycare and then she eats at 9/9:30. Lately we've been alternating being sick in our house so we only made it to church two weeks ago (last week we had a snowstorm). But last we went it worked out well to wake her up at 7:20 (we'd had everything ready to go before-hand) and then dress her and go. She sat through the whole service (they don't have nursery that early). Sometimes we go into the cry room with glass into the sanctuary and feed during the sermon and then go back in before communion.
