Stitches vs Staples (c-section ?)

If you've had a c-section before, did they use stitches or staples? How well did you heal? I had staples last time and my incision ended up opening up. I had to have a home-health nurse come out and my incision had to be packed twice a day for 6 weeks. I'm desperately trying to avoid that again. Please share your thoughts!

I had internal stitches last time that dissolved on their own, and I think he put some glue on the outside.  I had no issues and got compliments from all the nurses on how great it looked.  :)

  • I had glue and internal stitches. It healed up really well and aside from a couple stitches working their way out, no issues.
  • Also glue and internal dissolvable stitches.  No issues.  I have a different OB this time so I'm not sure what he'll do.  He's from the same practice, but my friend had another OB in the practice give her staples, so who knows.

  • Mine were dissolvable and I had no issue. I definitely didn't want staples that would have to come out. It took me forever to be able to pull off the tape, though. Just icked me out...but I get squeamish about that stuff.

  • Since I've had like a billion c-sections.... I've had both staples and glue for different kiddos. I much prefer the glue. The staple itch and tend to have a little bit of a pucker and pull factor that I don't like. I was worried about the glue holding up and steri strips over it... and honestly the steri strips fell off way earlier than what I was expecting but I had no issues with it really. The only time I got infected was with staples after my first c-section when the incision opened a little bit and had to be repacked.

I think I need to ask this doctor what they use....
  • I had stitches that dissolved on their own and had no problems.
  • I believe the inside was stitches (dissoluble) but the outside was definitely staples. I had discussed with MY OB prior that i'd rather have stitches on the outside, but I went into labor 2 days before my scheduled c/s and the other OB that did it used staples. And honestly? I'm glad he did. It didn't hurt AT ALL to have them removed and my incision is beautiful, lol. You honestly can't even see it now...even the nurses after delivery were super impressed at how clean it was and how well it healed!

  • I had dissolvable stitches inside and staples outside. I was terrified of the removal but I can honestly say I didn't feel it at all. The staples don't close at the bottom like normal paper ones do which us what I pictured. Plus the incision site is totally numb. I split back open when he took them out and didn't even feel that. So if you do get staples please please don't stress about the removal. It will be one of the easiest things that happen while you are there! I'm with a new practice this time and don't know what method they use.
  • Removal of staples is super easy.  The staples don't round like when you staple papers, they just go in straight. The nurse that removes the staples will have this little tool that pops then ends of the staple out, it isn't like they pull them out. They just pop out.  It really looks painless (I've taken them out of csection wounds). Most mom's were nervous of this but have said it wasn't that bad.

That said, I had internal stitches and glue with steri strips on the outside.  And mine healed wonderfully and I hope I have the same.

I had staples. Let me tell you it was a bitch. Everyone kept saying oh you'll feel much better once you get them removed, and boy were they right.
Well my problem was that I am allergic to metal near my abdomin, even belt buckles give me a swollen itchy rash.
When the nurse removed them they did not all come out smoothly, about half were okay...there were about 5 that were stuck, my skin had swelled up and started to attempt to heal around them.*shudder* I dropped a couple f bombs right there. X_X Told my doc for this csec ill be writing with sharpie across my tummy, NO STAPLES! Lol
