Breastfeeding check-in!

sarajim06sarajim06 member
edited January 2014 in May 2013 Moms
Seeing the nursing/weaning posts in FFFC has me thinking about how close we're all getting to the year mark already! So what are your BFing plans?

Do you have a goal you're working towards?

When will you quit pumping? When will you wean?

How often/how much is LO eating these days?

Biggest challenges right now?

Re: Breastfeeding check-in!

  • Do you have a goal you're working towards?
    my goal is one year!
When will you quit pumping? When will you wean?
I don't know. I'm kind of hoping there is just a time where it feels right to both of us to stop.. But I can't imagine longer than a year and a half old at the oldest.

How often/how much is LO eating these days?
It depends usually once or twice overnight, and maybe 4-6 times throughout the day. He feeds on demand.

    Biggest challenges right now?
work and travelling. It's so hard on the road or with day long meetings to get it in. I am lucky though. My national leader EBFd (no bottle like me) for over a year, so she tells me to do what I need to do which is nice. It's definitely helpful to have her support.

  • I would like to make it until he is two but I am ok of he wants to wean between 1-2. He eats every 3 hours (sometimes longer) and a couple of times at night. As far as challenges go, we are doing pretty good. My least favorite part is pumping when i work pr go out. My lc said that some women want to exclusively pump when they are in the hospital because they think it will be easier. Even though I only pump part time, I was like "eff that noise!"

When will you quit pumping? When will you wean?
Hoping to quit pumping at one year. But maybe keep nursing like morning and evening for a while. Hoping we will kind of self-wean. But not sure if that will happen.

How often/how much is LO eating these days?
He nurses 1-2 times MOTN still, then in the morning before I leave. He takes 1-2 bottles of BM while I'm gone and nurses 2 more times before bed so I guess 4-6 times a day.

    Biggest challenges right now?
Mini-nursing strikes. I think from teething. He will pull off fussing. And I think he'd rather eat puffs all day than nurse.
And pumping at work. I hate that shit.

  • Do you have a goal you're working towards?
    One year

When will you quit pumping? When will you wean?
I work in a school, and our summer break starts a week after her first birthday. I only pump at work, so once the school year ends, I naturally won't be pumping anymore. I always thought I would wean at a year, but honestly, I will probably let her wean herself whenever she is ready. Although, if we are still going at 2 years, I may have to end it. I love BFing and don't want it to stop anytime soon.

How often/how much is LO eating these days?
She has always refused bottles and now doesn't like sippy cups either, so she is reverse cycling. She nurses once in the morning before we leave, I go nurse her at daycare on my lunch break, and she nurses 2 more times in the evening before bed. She still does a full nursing session about two times MOTN as well. Yawn.

    Biggest challenges right now?
The fact that she won't take breastmilk from anything other than my breasts.

  • Do you have a goal you're working towards? One year is my goal.

When will you quit pumping? When will you wean? I haven't pumped since October (I'm a SAHM). I'd like to wean ASAP to be honest but I'll wait until DD is ready.

How often/how much is LO eating these days? She eats about every 2-2.5 hours during the day, about 2-3 times at night (kill me).

Biggest challenges right now? She won't drop her night feedings and she STILL won't take a bottle X(

Do you have a goal you're working towards? I don't have any plan but I would like to make it to the year mark.

When will you quit pumping? When will you wean? I will see if Eliza weans herself first. Both my auntie's children did it when they reached a year. Ideally I don't really want to BF a toddler in public because I would feel very uncomfortable. I'm hoping that Eliza will wean herself to morning and evening feeds. If she does that then I'm happy to go upto two years.

How often/how much is LO eating these days? Probably about every 2-3 hours day and night. Occasionally she will go for longer. She seems to enjoy her solids so I'm looking forward to them increasing.

Biggest challenges right now? Sleep. I would really love a decent nights sleep. I feel like it has improved but it's still not great.

Do you have a goal you're working towards? No. We are just breastfeeding until it doesn't work for us. I would assume after one and maybe near two but she might have other plans.

When will you quit pumping? When will you wean?
I am not pumping. I have no idea when I will wean. It just happened naturally woth my sons jist past 2. If she decides to do the same that would be great. I hope she doesn't wean too early but that would be ok too.

How often/how much is LO eating these days? She eats when she wants and she seems to slightly switch her schedule everytime I get used to it. She nurses as she wakes, many times during the day unless we go out. She limits nursing if we are out. She also nurses through the night. ( mostly in her sleep)

She refuses all solids. She ate two cheerios yesterday and I was proud.
My other kids were so different, and much easier.

    Edit
Biggest challenges right now? Starting solids and weight gain. Her weight gain was great until a couple months ago and then it slowed way down. I don't know what to do.

  • Do you have a goal you're working towards?
    My goal is one year.

When will you quit pumping? When will you wean?
I SAH so I pump occasionally. I will wean around a year so I can TTC.

How often/how much is LO eating these days?
He nurses 5-6 times during the day and then 1-2 times at night.

    Biggest challenges right now?
He's distracted by everything while nursing so I think his feeding sessions are shorter than they should be because he wants to get down or see what's going on. I'd also like if he dropped the MOTN sessions but no biggie I guess.

  • Do you have a goal you're working towards?
At least a year, which shouldn't be hard since he prefers boobs to food

When will you quit pumping? When will you wean?
I'll keep pumping when I go back to work until he is weaned.  I'll let him go til he's 2 and if he hasn't started cutting back then I'll start cutting him off slowly

How often/how much is LO eating these days?
5-6 times per day and a couple at night

    Biggest challenges right now?
He's been refusing to nurse more lately, and I'm not sure why.  I think righty is crapping out on me.  We are going to work on getting him used to taking a bottle during the day since I go back to work in a month.
  • @blush64 is she losing or just not gaining? I know that for my ds he basically plateaued at 6 months and has gained very little since. I asked the lc and his ped and they both said it is normal because babies become so active.

  • Do you have a goal you're working towards? 1 year at least and then probably until she self weans, no later than 3.

When will you quit pumping? When will you wean?
I am putting away the pump at exactly a year, I can't wait to be done, I hate pumping!

How often/how much is LO eating these days?
About every 2-3 hours on demand at home, and 5 days a week she goes to daycare, so I feed her in the morning, 2-3 times on demand in the evening and usually at least once at night. She is taking cereal plus purees 2x a day.

    Biggest challenges right now?
I start a new job Feb 3rd and I'm not sure how that is going to work with pumping. I am also training someone to replace me starting Tuesday, so I'm not sure how I'm going to pump with her there. *sigh*

  • My goal is now bf to a year.

I will quit pumping around the same time.

Eatig about every 2-3hrs. But only 1-2 times at night.

Biggest challenge now is trying to figure out to night wean or sleep train to get everyone more sleep.

@JoJo716 It started slowing down near 4 months and then was a lot slower at 5-6 months but in the last month she gained less than a pound. She only lost weight when she was sick a few times.

I have no idea what to do. She still has wet and poopy diapers but since she was about 4 months old her poopy diapers have been greenish with mucus. No blood and not frothy just slightly green and some mucus.

    Edit to remove unnecessary words.

Edit And to say thanks for your info. She did become more active at 4 months and has gotten incredibly more active in the last couple of months.
  • @blush64 ds has gained 8 oz in two months. However, he was in the 90th percentile at 6 months, so he had to slow down. The diapers would concern me. Have you talked to your ped? If not, you might want to for ease of mind. Do you think maybe she developed an allergy?

  • @JoJo716 I have seen two doctors who lnow nothing about breastfeeding and one who recommends formula for every issue. I was concerned that she developped an allergy of some sort but the doctor would not entertain the idea. I have another appointment next week with a different doctor and if this fails I am returning to my old doctor 2 hours away who was amazing and who I love.
  • Do you have a goal you're working towards? At least a year.

When will you quit pumping? When will you wean? After a year, once he is transitioned to whole milk. I would like DS to wean himself. Now if he is 2 and still BF, maybe I'll reevaluate.

How often/how much is LO eating these days? Twice during MOTN, once before work, 2-3 bottles while I'm working and twice once I'm home from work. On the weekends, he nurses approximately every 3 hours.

Biggest challenges right now? Pumping! I can't always pump enough for two bottles. My little freezer stash is getting smaller! I hate it!! Biting is another issue. DS is biting me constantly. I've tried everything I read & nothing is helping. :((

@blush64 that sounds like a good idea. You might also think about contacting a lc (I think most are nurses as well) or even someone from La Leche League for suggestions.

  • Do you have a goal you're working towards?  I have always wanted to make it to the one year mark.  But now that we are so close to that I am feeling I want to go a bit further.  DH has differing opinions on this though.

When will you quit pumping? When will you wean?
I am going to let DS wean on his own.

How often/how much is LO eating these days?
He nurses about 5-6 times a day.

    Biggest challenges right now?
Our most recent challenge is his biting.  The last few days he had started biting but today he has only done it once! I'm hoping he is cured of this!

  • My goal is a year and I'm pretty confident we'll reach it. Really didn't think we would after the start we had!

I pump at work and so will stop pumping at a year. But I plan to do extended BFing and let the girls nurse as long as they want to (well, maybe up to 2.5 or 3).

They nurse every 2 or 3 hours when I'm home, including overnight. The night wakings/comfort nursing is our biggest challenge right now. One or the other wakes me up every hour and a half at least. They sleep on either side of me.

I think they are starting to reduce their intake of breast milk though as they're eating a lot of solids. They used to take three four-oz bottles while I was at work and now they're not finishing them and I'm pumping two or three ounces less per day than I did before. They'll be 9 months next weekend. We do BLW so I don't really "regulate" their solids intake. Is the reduction in breast milk normal for 9 months? I've been worrying that I need to cut back on solids.

I secretly am not ready for them to stop nursing so much.

  • Do you have a goal you're working towards?
Minimum one year. I'm afraid to get pregnant before that because I don't want to face the potential challenges that could bring.

When will you quit pumping? When will you wean? I don't pump much, unless we are on a long car trip and we don't want to stop. I don't wean him until he weans himself, but like @Lolalipsy I don't really want to publicly nurse a toddler.

How often/how much is LO eating these days? He nurses on demand, usually every two to three hours and at least twice in the motn.

Biggest challenges right now? I have a clogged duct right now and it is really painful. Other than that, the teeth! Ouch.

  • Do you have a goal you're working towards?

    1 year.

When will you quit pumping? When will you wean?
I have quit pumping. I just feed when she wants now. I plan to cut my day time feeds in the next few months and just feed twice a day until a year.

How often/how much is LO eating these days? About 4 nursing sessions.

    Biggest challenges right now?
    Keeping her from getting distracted.

  • Hoping to make it to a year but starting to feel like I want to quit the last few weeks. DS only nurses well 4x a day ( 1MOTN, 2 before naps and bedtime). The rest of the day he just pops on and off letting milk spray everywhere. I can't nurse in public anymore cause it's such a mess. I finally found a sippy that my bottle hater will take so I have been pumping in the afternoon for the last week and letting him graze on the sippy. Before I started pumping in the afternoon, I noticed a huge drop in my supply from his drive by nursing. I will probably quit pumping at 11 months.

When will you quit pumping? When will you wean? I will stop pumping at work at the one year mark. Not sure when we will wean, before 18 months.

How often/how much is LO eating these days? He takes 3 bottles during the day, one bottle is formula. Then he nurses 3 times before going to bed and then however many times he wakes up at night.

    Biggest challenges right now?
Teething and the biting. Trying to up my supply. Along with Mother's milk tea I just started putting flax seed meal in my oatmeal. And before my tea is gone I am going to order More Milk Special Blend.

  • Do you have a goal you're working towards? Making it to 1 year.

When will you quit pumping? When will you wean? I will quit pumping at 1 year or just cut down to only on my lunch break until school gets out 1 mo later. Then I'm going all office space on that thing. I will probably wean over the summer. Maybe. Or just keep morning and evening feeds. I don't know. I love our special cuddle time. We will see how I feel. And what happens when he gets teeth. Lol. All this biting talk is making me nervous.

How often/how much is LO eating these days? If it's a week day-eats when wakes, 2-5oz bottles at daycare, sometimes an additional 2 oz snack bottle, eats 2 more times once home before bed. And we are back down to only 1-2 MOTN feedings (yippee!). On the weekends he eats every 3 hours-still 2 MOTN feeds.

Biggest challenges right now? Being a teacher, finding time to pump is challenging, so I was only pumping at lunch (which was not enough). The first week of holiday break was rough bc I was not producing enough during the day. I worked hard to get my supply back up and requested an additional 15 minute break to pump. My principal does not appear to be too pleased about it. I am concerned this request will affect my review. I am trying not to dwell on that though, and am focusing on doing what is best for my baby, my number one priority.
  • Do you have a goal you're working towards?
Like most people, my goal has always been a year. I think that I will nurse longer than tht though, at least in the morning an at night.

When will you quit pumping? When will you wean?
I CANNOT wait to stop pumping. I despise that machine. Like a PP, I'm a teacher and the school yet ends a week after his birthday. I'll probably still nurse him at home but I won't be pumping anymore.

How often/how much is LO eating these days?
He eats once before I leave in the morning. 3 bottles during the day. Twice when I'm home at night, and once in the MOTN.
    Biggest challenges right now?
Supply issues. I only pump around 10 ounces at work and he's been eating 15 ounces :-/

My goal was to make it to a year, but now that we've come this far, I'd like to keep going to two, or self weaning.

I pump once a day to use for oatmeal and to build a small stash for sippy cups if he weans earlier than expected.

I have no idea how much he eats, but he snacks all day long right now, and pretty much sleeps with my boob in his mouth. I don't even know how often he eats overnight - I stopped counting.

I consider nursing easy now, but the challenges are comfort nursing at night, and distraction during the day.

  • Hey, ladies. I'm an occasional poster here. I'm amazed how many similarities there are between DS and your LOs.

Do you have a goal you're working towards?
    1 year at least.

When will you quit pumping? When will you wean?
I work from home so I only pump to build a fridge supply for leaving the house and nighttime bottles. I would ideally like DS to wean himself, but if he doesn't I would like to cut feedings down to morning and night around 1.5-2.

How often/how much is LO eating these days?
He eats on demand. He still nurses to sleep for naps and bedtime. He wakes up 2-4 times a night to nurse.

    Biggest challenges right now?
DS has been pinching my chest so much lately. It hurts so bad and my chest is bruised and scratched. I've been letting him pinch a little because it distracts him so that he can nap, but it's getting out of control. He doesn't have his top teeth yet. I'm really afraid of being bitten.

    Exactly all of this.
  • Am I the only one that doesn't mind pumping at work? It's my bumping time.

If I had a consistent schedule/ pumping time AND a private room to do it in, I wouldn't mind so much. Having to find a room each time is stressful

Our new goal is 1 year. Never thought we'd make it this far!

I can't wait to stop pumping. It is the bane of my existence. And the pump right before I go to bed is tough. I wish I could just go to sleep but I need that extra milk. I made it to 9 month pumping with my oldest so I'm hoping to make it to a year this time. We'll see.

DS eats in the morning before work, 3- 5 oz bottles at daycare, at least once after work and a bottle before bed.

Biggest challenge is finding time to pump durin the day.
  • Am I the only one that doesn't mind pumping at work? It's my bumping time.

I bump and fb while pumping at work too. I don't mind having that down time twice a day at work! It's just such a pain to get all hooked up and wash parts every night and make sure I don't forget anything the next morning. And also remembering to get my milk out of the fridge at the end of the day.

Last week, the fire alarm went off while I was pumping. THAT was exciting.

  • My goal is one year, but I will go longer if LO still wants to nurse. She was born 4/30, and I'm also a teacher. My last workday before being off for the summer is 6/13 so I don't think I'll pump those weeks unless she has any issues transitioning to WCM. I could still nurse full time once I start summer vacation. LO eats 3 5oz bottles while I'm at work, nurses before work in the am and 3 times before going to bed. She STTN. Biggest challenge is pumping enough at school due to bad timing of my breaks (first time I can pump is 11:30). I have to pump 7 days a week at 5am to make up the difference. Bf is going great....and my LO still doesn't have teeth ;)

    **DS - 11/9/00**

  • Do you have a goal you're working towards?
My original goal was 6 months. Now I'm thinking a year, or until I'm comfortable introducing whole milk (close to a year). I tried introduce formula after 6 months, but gave up after a week. She wouldn't drink any more than 1 oz added to a bottle and it just wasn't worth the hassle for me.

When will you quit pumping? When will you wean?

    Around 1 year

How often/how much is LO eating these days?

LO is nursing 5 or 6 times a day, and eating solids 3 times a day

    Biggest challenges right now?

When I pump and give her a bottle she will only drink 2 oz. She doesn't seem hungry after, but it doesn't seem right to me. It's all I get when I pump too. She has always gained enough weight so I just don't get it.

  • 1) Goals: I'm an EPer so I've always had short term goals. We had such problems in the beginning with his tongue tie that I was just happy to pump enough for him. I do 2 month goals. He turns 8 months on the 28th so that goal will be made. Next will be 10 months and ultimately a year. I haven't even let myself think that far ahead. I just got AF back and had an ovarian cyst burst so my supply just took a nose dive. Pumping extra trying to get it back.

    2) If I can make it a year I'll start working on reducing my pumping. I'll go to 3 times a day then two than once and hopefully I won't have any issues with it.

    3) R eats about 28-30 oz a day. He has 5 5oz bottles through out the day with 3 solids and snacks. He still wakes for little bottles at night 1-2 times usually between 2-4 oz

    4) biggest challenge is getting my supply up. I'm pumping extra, eating my oatmeal with flaxseed and brewers yeast, taking fenugreek, drinking water and it's not helping. I'm lucky that my job is great about it. I work from home most days so I can pump when I need to (as long I'm not on a call where I have to talk). When I go in they have 3 dedicated rooms to nursing mothers. All have lockers for our pumps, a private fridge, docks for our laptops and conference phones so if I don't have to talk, I don't have to miss a call. There are about 15 women who use these rooms but most of us aren't in the office full time so finding a room is never hard. I'm really fortunate for that.

There are about 15 women who use these rooms but most of us aren't in the office full time so finding a room is never hard. I'm really fortunate for that.

    Wow!! That sounds amazing!

Do you have a goal you're working towards?  One year and then I plan to drop down to just a night time pre-bed feeding and maybe one morning one

When will you quit pumping? When will you wean?  I hope to stop pumping at a year when we introduce WCM, I HATE pumping at work.  Weaning completely I will leave up to him

How often/how much is LO eating these days?  he eats 6 to 7 times a day (pumped bottle and nurses)

Biggest challenges right now? I have had a supply drop the last two weeks or so, but it may be because i finally got my first PP AF, so now that it has run its course I will see if supply goes back up.  He is also SO distractable during the day that I can only nurse him in the dark in the nursery, I miss the days of lounging on the couch and watching some TV while he ate.  And the TEETH!  he just got four more (for a grand total of 6) and they hurt.

  • Am I the only one that doesn't mind pumping at work? It's my bumping time.

I don't mind it but my nipples doth protest.

I'd put a Movember mustache fail, but then
you'd all have to look at it until February.
  • Do you have a goal you're working towards? I guess a year. Likely longer since she is an addict. When will you quit pumping? When will you wean? Haven't even thought about it. I guess I'll follow her? How often/how much is LO eating these days? I pump twice at work and she has one bottle during this time. I probably feed her four times myself except when she wakes up MOTN and stays there all freaking night. Biggest challenges right now? See above. And she's so easy for other people but kind of a pain in the ass for me some days. Like she wants to be on or near my breasts at all times.
