Overdue and waiting for induction

I'm a FTM and 40 weeks and 6 days. My midwife keeps having me come in for NSTs, which have been fine. She said yesterday if I don't go in labor on my own by Thursday evening I should be induced. I'm going nuts over the waiting and I just want to go into labor on my own. I'm looking for some reassurance from other moms. I need to know there's light at the end of this tunnel!

Re: Overdue and waiting for induction

  • I almost posted something similar to this yesterday - I'll be 40 weeks on Thursday.  But at my appointment yesterday, basically my doctor told me that my little one won't be coming anytime soon.  He thinks he'll see me again next Monday - so 40 weeks, 4 days.  At that point, we'll probably talk induction.  But I'm with you - I was really hoping to go into labor on my own.  I've been second guessing every little sign or symptom.

Sorry - no reassurance here!  But I do understand.  And the babies can't stay in there forever, so there IS light at the end of the tunnel!!!

  • I will never understand why women are pushed to be induced just because they are "overdue" if there isn't an issue with mom or baby. If your NST and BPP are fine, what is the rush? Why not say, "no thanks" and wait for labor to start on its own? 38-42 weeks is considered normal gestation, with 40 just being the average. As someone who delivered previously at 42 weeks and is currently past my EDD, I just don't get it... I'm anxious to meet my LO also, but not enough to go through unnecessary interventions.

With DS1, I pushed my induction date back. My OB originally wanted an induction at 7 days past due, which she scheduled. But I pushed for 10 days past due and had the OB reschedule. I went into labor on my own, 8 days past due and he was born the next day.

Can you discuss pushing back your induction date with the midwives?
  • I was against induction when the OB handling the BPP said we had "options" back on my due date. I feel like I've already pushed it back. The midwife is concerned with the potential for the placenta to not function as well if we wait, as well as the chance for meconium to show up in the amniotic fluid. I've been 2-3 cm dilated for about a week and 80% effaced. I'm constantly watching my body for any signs of change. I'm just growing restless and I don't want to risk the baby's health.
  • My husband also feels out of his depth with the whole thing and defers to the medical people for their advice. At first I didn't have his support when the suggestion came at 40 weeks. He went to work, did some research online, and came home to tell he understood where I was coming from. Every day the baby doesn't come now he grows restless too. I'm getting tired of fighting the idea.

I am past my due date too.  40w 4days.  I just had my weekly check in and it appears my BP is a bit elevated (new for me), so the doctor wants to see me for an ultrasound and BP check on Thurs. If my BP is okay (and no baby yet) we will likely have ANOTHER ultrasound and BP check on Monday...

I think I figured out the labor solution though... I just set up a two, hour long conference calls where I'll run the meeting that I invited A LOT of people to for tomorrow (and there is a HUGE snow storm coming tonight).

    I already feel crampy :)
  • I'm 40 w 3 days today, have been going in for NSTs as well- everything looks great. My Dr is willing to let me go into next week before we talk induction (I'm a VBAC so options are a bit different). She's really conservative, so I am grateful she's willing to continue to communicate about it, instead of push me to induce ( happened w DS- 40w4d ended in an emergency c-section bc he wasn't tolerating the Pitocen contractions). Bottom Line, no one can MAKE you show up for an induction, so don't fell like you HAVE to. Trust your body- I TOTALLY get what a mindF it is waiting for something to start happening. Have you tried acupuncture? I've had 3 sessions in the last week, and had a little bit of bloody discharge today...hang in there- some babies just need longer- ACOG doesn't call it post date until after 42 weeks
  • I was induced with both my girls just after 40 weeks, and have no regrets.  I had no complications either.  If you want to wait, just discuss it with your OB or midwife.  Unless there are concerns, they should be okay with it, but inductions aren't evil either.

  • Honestly, if you're sitting at 41 weeks with no labor in sight and want to be induced, then be induced.  Despite what the PPs have said, most OBs won't even let you go to 42 weeks anymore.  Now if you want to wait it out, then that's a different story... you need to talk to your OB to see how long their willing to let you go on your own.

    Either way, good luck.

  • My best friend was scheduled for induction at 41+3, so she pumped the night before, and went into labor on her own the morning she was supposed to be induced. That's what I plan to do (currently at 40+1) if it comes to that!

My coworker's wife had her baby yesterday at 40+5 and was scheduled for an induction at 41+1 had she not gone into labor. Not for a medical reason, just because baby would be "late." She was fine, baby was fine. The baby was 6lbs 3oz, so there wasn't big baby danger. So why induce? Medically necessary reasons for induction aside - we've done this for so long, making good decisions daily for our health and our baby's health; I don't understand why we would rush and not trust a process that we've trusted for 9 months to make our baby. We trust our bodies to grow a human, but we don't trust it to know when to let baby out? Why? I understand that we're probably not the most earthy of broads on TB, but why would this be a UO around here?

Are we giving off an "INDUCE ALL THE 37 WEEKERS!" vibe or something..? ;)

  • Did they talk about possibly stripping your membranes??? It's worth a try, it happened to me and I wanted to avoid an induction too. So at my 41 week OB appt. they did the stripping and the next morning I started contractions(15 hrs after the stripping) and went into labor on my own before my scheduled induction 3 days later. I had LO at 41 weeks 1day.

  • I went into labor at 39w 6d, went to the hospital and then contractions stalled. In essence, I ended up being induced even though that was not my plan. So you can plan and try for the birth that you want, but you may just have to roll with what the doctors think is best in the moment.

  • update... the conference call plan and snow storm do NOT seem to be working to start labor :)... oh well, thought I had a "new" wives tale to get behind
  • I'm at 40 + 2 right now and have a scheduled induction at 41+2. I'm really hoping I go before that because I'd rather my body start the work on its own. I'm with you ladies and don't understand why the dr's are always quick to want to induce when mom and baby are fine. I'm just looking forward to no longer hearing " no baby yet?" from family and friends!!
  • 40w6d today...  still hanging around.  I have to admit, I am getting quite cranky and moody.  I don't like the mood swings at all!  I go in for an u/s and bp test at 4pm...  I guess that's a good thing, because I haven't seen my baby since the 19wk u/s.

The "no baby yet" is starting to get on my nerves.  My cell phone just dinged... I wonder what the text will say!  jk... we know what the text will say!

I'm sweating through cloths and such, is this an elevated bp issue?  eh, I'll find out more today.  I'm finding it hard to be patient!
