Can we talk about PP underwear?

Full disclosure:  I love my slutty underwear.  I wore Hanky Panky lacy thongs my entire first pregnancy and so far all the way through this one.  I had a c/s the first time, so postpartum, I was able to wear boy shorts that either hit just under my scar or pulled up over it.  Something tells me that won't be the case if I have a successful VBAC.  So, any recommendations on PP underwear brands and styles?  Should I be looking for straight up Walter Whites?  That might depress me more than my PP body.

  • I have no idea as I'm a FTM, but I love the Walter White pic (and reference)!

  • LOL! My DH appreciates the 'Walter Whities' picture!

I have no suggestions as I'm a FTM, but am interested in what BTDT Moms have to say.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.

After delivery I felt like my belly looked like it did around 20-24 weeks (although much much squishier).  I think whatever undies you are comfy in now would be fine for the immediate postpartum.  Personally I went full out granny, it just worked better with pads.

  • i've been wearing my lacy thongs...but recently invested in my first pack of Hanes since, ohhhh, junior high.
they actually aren't too bad and DH thinks they're kinda sexy.  i wore a pair with lingerie the other night to try to smut them up a bit.
    and i digress.

i will plan on wearing those PP. full coverage seems to be the key.
  • I'm curious about this as well... FTM here. I've heard about the "mesh panties" from the hospital and that you must take as many home as you can. I haven't even thought past the mesh stage though.

Like you, I wore my regular thongs ( and some a size up) through all of my first pregnancy. I had a really rough vaginal delivery and difficult/long recovery. The first few days pp I wore the mesh panties. I needed them to hold the large ice pack in there while in the hospital. After that I wore large granny panties (I would normally wear a small) bc I didn't want anything digging into me and I needed large pads for months pp. My situation was prob worse case scenario.

Eta: I think you would be fine with boy shorts again, but personally I'd buy a size up.

Bear in mind you'll be wearing a pad for a while after a vaginal delivery. I got plain ol' black Hanes for postpartum wear and was happy for them.
Black.. good thinking. I wouldn't have thought about that so I'm glad you mentioned it!

  • I'm in the minority, but I love the huge mesh ones from the hospital.  I've always gotten extras and it's lasted me through both times.

  • I bought some basic, plain old full coverage underwear for PP. That way I didn't care if they got ruined. Also, I feel like they put a BUNCH of stuff in your undies after delivery so you need some that hold things in - I was wearing a huge pad, had a newborn size diaper packed with ice, etc. But I wore mesh panties in the hospital and honestly, I didn't mind them at all.

  • I just wore my period underwear.  You know the gross ones you only keep around for the first day or 2 of your period?  I will likely do the same with the same pairs since I haven't had a real period since November 2011 and they are about in the same shape.

  • I don't have any advice, but I love this for 2 reasons:

    1. The Breaking Bad reference

    2.  I LOVE Hanky Panky.  Best undies ever!
  • I just bought some cheap boy shorts that I didn't care if they got ruined and they worked fine.  I think my regular bikini underwear would have been fine too.  Anything that can hold the pads to absorb the leftovers should work.

HA.  I didn't even catch that until now.  Love it.

I am home with a sick baby, she sucks all my brain power.

  • I feel like I'm in the minority because I haven't put a thong on since conception.

I had a LOT of PP bleeding and was wearing two- yes, two- super gigantic pads at a time.  So I vote granny panties all the way- but I also wanted them to fit snugly to hold the pads close to me.  That's where the hospital mesh undies came in handy.  I literally wore them for weeks.  Ugh I'm cringing at the thought and feeling of wearing a pad again...

  • Love that you posted this.  I did a Wal-Mart run yesterday and have been picking things up as I think about them and stashing them in my hospital bag.  I was checking out some oh-so-stylish full coverage Hanes to replace my trusty, smutty, lacy boy shorts that I love.

My question to STMs, is it best to buy a size up or buy our regular size?

I did not.  Like @MamaLlama14 said I like a snug fit but a lot of women do.

  • I plan to get a sack of uglies at Costco...as a FTM, my sister with 3 kids suggested getting dark colors...
  • I bought a size up from normal in some granny panties from Walmart, so I wouldn't care if they got ruined.

A size up was necessary for me, because I was no where close to my normal size yet post delivery!

  • @g8trbaby01 yes you'll need the big undies and pads. Even with Csections you'll have PP bleeding. With both my Csections I bled for 6weeks. So takes many mesh panties and pads for the hospital as you can, and have a stock at home too. I had to send hubby out to pick up more, which he did not appreciate. ;)

  • I love Hanky Panky thongs, but during my pregnancy I've been wearing the V-kinis only, super comfortable! But for when I work out or other days, I wear Gap Body hipster or boyshorts. They are actually super comfy and cute!

  • I got a pack of the hanes granny panties after my c-section. All my regular undies seemed to hit right along my incision. I'll probably just use those, and any of my regular undies that I am comfy in. The bleeding was only really heavy for the first couple weeks and after that I didn't worry that I was going to ruin anything.

  • Comfort is key! Whatever will make you feel good until the PP bleeding is over, which for me was about a month until it totally stopped. It's not the time to care about style, so go for the big drawers. :)

Ditto this. I went for practical. Its hard to give à damn about undies when just getting a shower is a novelty.

  • I carry all my fat in my hips, so as soon as I put on pregnancy weight my lacy thongs were cutting into me. It was muffin-riffic. Mmmm muffins. Anyways I got some sized up cotton bikinis from VS and they seem to be working just fine.

Yeah.  Use the mesh ones from the hospital, and then get yourself something that doesn't cut across the bikini line.  I usually wear bikini bottoms, and even once the scar is fully healed, I still feel irritation where the elastic cuts across it.  It was worse after DS1 because I had a ton of keloid scarring, but after my 2nd, it hasn't been so bad.

  • Ditto to everything said! I wore some of my old undies. I like a snug fit so I personally didnt like the hospital undies. I'm a smaller/petite girl and they didnt fit very well so I just wore my own basic cheapy cotton undies.
