weaning baby with daycare

So after our pediatrician appt. last week & discussing weaning with him I was all ready to have daycare adjust our LO's feeding schedule today.  My 9 1/2 mo. old has been eating a lot more solid food & wanting less b.m.  So instead of daycare feeding him a bottle 3 times during the day, I combined the bottle feedings to 2 & upped the solids at 7:30am & 12:30pm (with bottles being given at 10:30 & 3:30).  My hopes were to make these bottles feedings less and less and since they were at a "snack" time & not meal time, we could replace them with a small snack eventually as his meals continue to grow.  Well, long story short(er)...daycare informed me that they have a set feeding schedule for the kids (they all eat lunch- solids at 10:30, so at 12:30 they can be given a bottle and put down for a nap.  I"m upset b/c I am a planner & I had a plan all set as to how this would work.  I can see it from their point that it's very hard to customize everyone's feeding schedule, but at the same time, this is when I want my kid to eat.  Feeling frustrated.  I agreed to switch the solids & bottle times but it's not what I want to do.  :(
Anyone have a similar issue with their daycare?

I'm surprised at this, especially at this age. I know routine is important, but the policy at our daycare (and other ones in our area) for the infant room is that they are on their own schedule. I chose the time for all bottles and breakfast/lunch and they were very open to that. They let me know if he eats/drinks earlier or later but for the most part, it's always around the time I give. I'm sorry you're feeling frustrated!

  • That is odd that they won't work with you on schedule.

That being said, your LO probably shouldn't be reducing bottles at this age. You can wean from BM to formula or milk with your doctor's approval, but they still need fluid with solid foods. Maybe I'm just misreading your plan. Good luck working it out with daycare.

We've actually not reduced the amt. of bm he's getting yet, just combining the feedings from 3 (5 oz) to 2 (7.5oz) during the day.  Just trying to get him used to not eating as often, so when we do get him off of bm it'll be less feedings to remove/replace.  He still gets bm 4 times a day, & 3 meals.  I plan on breastfeeding until he's a year & I just wanted to start getting the schedule in place for that time.

  • That makes sense. Reading comprehension fail for me.

Can you talk to a supervisor or another teacher or something about schedule? I feel like with infants, whatever the parents say as far as schedule should pretty much be what they try to do... I'd be ticked about the teacher's response too!

  • It seems strange that they expect every infant to be on the same schedule.

We filled out an individual feeding schedule for our daycare and we review/revise it as needed. I would talk to the director and see if that's their actual policy.
  • I can see them having set times if they have a lot of kids. If everyone had their own schedule, they would be prepping food all the time. And when one kid eats, they all want to eat and its hard for a kid to understand why they can't eat.

That being said, if it's important to you, maybe you can find a different daycare that fits your expectations better. It sounds like there should be some options. You should have your baby cared for in the manner that you want, especially since you are paying a ton of money to have them there.

  • That's strange. We actually have to fill out a meal plan every month at our daycare. They don't move them to table foods and the lunch plan till they turn 1 and move to the toddler room.

  • IME with daycare, they don't have any sort of schedule until they get to the toddler room. That's when the 2 snacks plus lunch started (snacks around 9am and 3pm, lunch around 12pm). Plus also a nap around 12:30-1 wouldn't work for my baby. All of my girls have done naps around 9-10am and 2-3pm for daycare.

I wouldn't be happy that they weren't following my wishes.

Fwiw, my older girls never had more than 5oz in a bottle and had 3 bottles/day at daycare. They transitioned very easily to table food and whole milk at daycare while continuing to nurse at home. I wouldn't worry too much about the transition.
