Babies: 9 - 12 Months

11 mo old not crawling.

Ok my mom is starting to freak out that my ds is not crawling. He doesn't even really try. is this normal? what can I do to encourage him to crawl? He has plenty of floor time all day to just sit and play. I can't make him stay on his tummy because he knows how to roll, so thoughts??

Re: 11 mo old not crawling.

  • 70% of babies skip crawling & go straight to walking so maybe encourage that? Can he stand against a peice of furniture?

  • Lisa is right, some babies do not crawl. I don't think the percentage is that high, however.

I wouldn't worry until your doctor is worried.

And you never know, he might start crawling soon. My daughter went from the "army crawl" to real crawling in about a week, which came out of no where at 10.5 months.

Trying to enforce walking at this stage is not necessary unless your baby is interested.

  • My first (who is now a perfectly active 3.5 year old), didn't crawl until 12 months, and didn't walk until 17 months.  I was lucky to have a pediatrician who was very reassuring when I was freaking out about her missing the milestones.  Just try to relax (easier said than done, I know.).

This time around I have the opposite to worry about. My son has been crawling since 8.5 months, but has very limited speech, no babbling or real consonant sounds.

All kids develop at their own rate, and always give you something to worry about :)
  • My LO is 10 months and not crawling (and not interested, doesn't like being on his tummy and will also just roll over). He is ,however, pulling himself up and starting to cruise along our furniture, so he may be one of those babies that skip crawling...maybe yours will be the same?

Is your LO very verbal? My guy is a babbler and has a few easy words under his belt. I've heard (and I'm not sure this is actually true), that babies mainly focus on either verbal or physical skills but have a hard time dividing their efforts full force between both. So maybe he's focused more on babbling right now?
  • I wouldn't worry about your baby not crawling yet.  As you stated some babies skip crawling altogether and since your baby is cruising it seems like that might be a strong possibility.  My daughter started crawling at 9 months but is also VERY verbal so I don't know if there is much truth to that school of thought.

  • Im right there with you! Just made 12 months. DS is now scooting and going backwards within the last 3 weeks it has become more aggressive. Im not as worried as i used to be. They do it when they want to I guess.

My DD never crawled, she was a sitting blob for 12 months. Then an 12.5 months she was walking and now she is in constant motion. Count your lucky stars, having a non-crawler is WAY!!! easier. DS is a crawler and he is a million times more work than DD ever was.
