Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Baby wont eat meat

I seem to have a little vegetarian. I have tried giving her both pureed meats as well as chucks of chicken, and she will not take them. She chews it for a moment, makes a grossed out face, and spits it out. I've been trying for a couple months. I mixed the meat in with some of her veggie purees and she still refused it. Any ideas? Is it a big deal if she doesn't eat meat? She is still breastfeeding.

Re: Baby wont eat meat

  • If she's under 1 it's not a big deal, and it's not really a big deal after 1 so long as she is getting a lot of lean protein.  I've read that it takes over 80 tries before a baby really decides they like something or not.  Maybe phase it out for a little bit and then reintroduce it some time down the road?

  • Good to know! I will take a break from it and try it down the road, maybe when she is more into finger foods. She is only eight months right now.

  • Maybe  she just doesn't like chicken since you don't mention having given her anything else.  Have you tried white fish, pork, beef or turkey?

  • just keep trying.. maybe once a week, or every other day, or jst a few times a month.... that's all yoi can really do. maybe she'll change her mind later. i thought they needed protein after 9 months tho?
  • I shred the chicken, steak up for my dd. She loves it! But she doesn't seem to care for the chunks. She likes browned up hamburger as long as its seasoned or in a sauce. She's been eating finger foods at like 6 months. She loves food!

  • I think pureed meats are gross. I tried it once and based on both of our reactions, I will never again give my child pureed meats.

If given the chance, babies around 6m can feed themselves. It's called Baby Led Weaning. Check out the link below.

My son eats meat well, particularly if done up in a meat ball. Turkey, chicken or lean beef. You can make it more flavorful if you use up some pureed veggies in the the mix and seasoned with spices or cheese.  Your baby might do better with a finger food too. My son is 7 months and eats finger foods great. Offer it and see what happens. Especially if they see you eating the same thing. It might take a few tries but that's ok,they will catch on quickly!

  • Chicken is the only thing Ive given her finger food-wise. Ive given her turkey, chicken, and beef in the pureed form.

  • Agreed with the seasoning. Try making your own puree. We did beef stew and ours just gobbles it up.

  • Haven't tried DS with meats yet, (that's next month for us) but the first flavor he ever really LOVED was the buttery taste of butternut squash. If I can't get him to eat meat, that's the first thing I'll try adding to it. You know you're baby. Think about the flavors she really responds to, and try tempting her by mixing the meat with something you know is her favorite. (Even if it's something you'd never eat yourself... like a chicken fruit medley...)
  • DD is almost 2.5 & meat is still hit/miss. As long as she is getting good protein elsewhere then you should be fine.
