Breastfeeding

Which bottles did you find best while BFing.

So my plan is to EBF for a little while (4 weeks), then slowly introduce a bottle for pumped milk and supplement with formula as well.  I have been having a hard time choosing which bottles I will buy.

Which bottles did you find were best for switching back and forth between actual nipple and bottle?

Re: Which bottles did you find best while BFing.

  • We liked tommee tippee. They're kind of expensive, but I got almost all of mine at TJ Maxx. I had a Medela pump but I bought the bottle adapters so I could pump directly into the TT bottles. I had to buy the adapters at Babies R Us (wait for a sale or coupon). Oh, and don't shop for TT bottles on amazon because their prices apfor them are really high for some reason.

  • It totally depends on the baby. ODS would only take the Breastflow bottles, while YDS used both Dr. Brown's and the Medela ones that came with my pump.
  • Breastflow bottles - I have heard a lot of good things about these.  I guess I am just worried about nipple confusion.
  • My advice would be to buy one or two of maybe 4 different ones.  The baby will choose which one he or she likes.  With my daughter i tried Dr. Browns, Tommee Tippee, Medela, Playtex Drop Ins and Avent and she decided she liked the Playtex Vent Aire (which was a freebie sent home as a registry gift).  My son SEEMED more laid back, so i went ahead and stocked up with Avent which were compatible with my pump.  He ended up refusing those and decided he liked the crappy Medela ones. I am swimming in bottles that were never used.
  • The other thing i would add is to pick a bottle that doesn't have a million parts to wash.  When i was using the Playtex Vent Aire, there were all these little parts and it was a major PITA.  And the Dr. Browns have these little straw thingys that i'd have to imagine would be really annoying to clean.
  • Just make sure it connects to your pump!  That is a great time saver IMO.

  • I went through a few that claimed to be fore BF babies and were not.  I ended up with the Playtex slow flow and it works great.  My LC suggested this as I was using the Medela Calma and she was sucking that down in a matter of minutes.  GL

  • Dr Browns have been a success for us.
  • My DD took the Avent Natural bottles (only one I tried, thankfully).

  • My other 2 took dr browns. This little guy won't. Playtex drop ins is all he takes

  • We use mostly Avent, the classic style. I actually just bought one Avent natural in a larger bottle size yesterday to try it out. DD1 used playtex ventaire, and yes, there were multiple pieces to wash, but I figured I was washing them anyway, what's another little piece. I also used the playtex drop in's for DD1 when she was at daycare. We didn't have a problem with any of them.

I was totally sold in tommee tippee after years if bottle feeding babies. Turns out my LOs mouth was just too small and I could see her having a crappy latch and sucking in tons of air with both tommee tippee and dr brown wide mouth. Now she's using regular dr. Browns at DC and nursing just fine at home.

We also tried the medela calma - piece of crap!

  • My DD would take most bottles - Medela, Avent, Platytex, she didn't care. DS refused a bottle for the most part. Around 6 months, he started begrudgingly taking the Lansinoh mOmma bottle.

  • It took us about 12w for DS to take a bottle, and we tried soooo many. I even had to leave him for the whole dayquite a few times and he still wouldn't take a bottle unless he was really really hungry.
We finally found success with Avent wide (glass) with a level 2 nipple (though we actually got him to start taking it using a level 3, then dropped back down once he got the hang of it) and warmed to just the perfect temp. He's REALLY picky about the temperature, but now he'll even take a bottle from me of need be.

  • We use Tommee Tippee. I have a Medela pump but it's no big deal for me to pump into Medela bottles and then pour the milk into Tommee Tippee. My LO is 6 months old and I've used the slowest flow nipples all along (we used to use Playtex nursers but my LO seems to like Tommee nipples more). IMPORTANT NOTE: My LC suggested never switching from the slow-flow nipples in order to avoid a bottle preference. Since the real thing only has one flow level, it's best not to change it in bottles. ;) Of course, many people go to faster flow bottle nipples and don't have a problem, but if you're concerned about confusion/preference, start with the slow flow and don't change it.
  • The medela bottles that came with my pump have been perfect.

  • We had to try a few different things, but what works for us now is a Dr. Brown's wide neck with a Lansinoh momma nipple.

And I disagree with pp, it is completely unnecessary to choose a bottle that is compatible with your pump.

  • we use Born Free
    they've been fine.
she didn't love them at first, but she didn't love ANY bottle at first-- once she got used to the concept of a bottle, she would take any bottle without a problem

  • We used Breastflow with DD and DS uses the bottles that came with my Medela pump.
  • We use Dr Brown's with preemie nipples. That's the bottles we had from our 1st. She takes them just fine so we've never used anything else with her.

This is interesting and makes perfect sense. My LO is still on NB flow and I feel like that is sometimes too overwhelming for her. I may never move to a faster flow now after reading your LC's point. Anyone else here stayed w the slowest flow for the entire time they feed pumped milk?

  • DS did great with the Calma but it is expensive and you have to put it together just right, which I have never been able to do. He's now taking the regular Medelas that came with the pump and Dr Browns. We've never had any nipple confusion, and he's been going back and forth since he was born.

  • +1 more for not ever moving away from the level 1 nipples. No need since BF babies are used to a slower flow when nursing.

  • Not to steal from the OP, but to the ladies who use playtex drop-ins, are you able to freeze BM in the drop in bags?
