What to wear during labor and birth?

I want to be comfortable and I want to have easy access for breast feeding/ skin to skin contact. I know I have the option of the hospital gown but anyone have any other ideas? I have a feeling that modesty will go out the window so I'm not super concerned about that.

Re: What to wear during labor and birth?

  • I'm sorry... I don't ever comment on the amount of repeat posts we get but seriously. We have had this question no less than 50 times.

Im wearing the hospital gown they provide bc the sheer amount of nasty that's going to go on during labor. If you don't want the gown (if they will let you wear anything else) get something you won't mind getting nasty.

I bought a bikini top so I can feel less awkward about getting in and out of water. Hadn't really planned on wearing anything else.

Now a question for you: why did you love tit the "you stupid bitches" post from yesterday? And if you agree with that OP that we're all so terrible, why come ask for our advice?

    P.S. The Bump never forgets

But now she wants something now!!!! TB is for support and answers on demand when it is convenient for her!!!!

I have long thought that many women here love nothing more than to take every opportunity to be rude, critical or downright bitchy because they can hide behind the computer. They would never say that shit in real life. Now please note that I said "many" and not all.

I KNEW someone would call me out on asking a question 82 people already asked. I do scroll through the board but I only bump on my mobile and the search function doesn't work. Sorry you wasted 30 seconds reading my post and replying to my post to let me know that its the 83rd post on this topic. 'Preciate it!
Not only did I say it's been asked a lot but I offered advice/experience.

I was not rude. Just wanted to point that out.
  • I wore my hospital gown the entire time (obviously I got a clean one after birth) up until I showered and went home.

  • 100% gown for labor.  You'll be leaking and gross and it's just the easiest thing.  I chose to wear the gown during my entire stay with #1.  I had huge granny panties, pads, and all kinds of crap between my legs.  The gown was just easy.  This time I will probably bring a fuzzy robe since I'm always cold and it'll be easy to wear and breastfeed.

  • I don't know how many times this has come up but I was literally just telling my husband that I dont understand the overpriced "delivery" gown on Etsy so that why I opened this post. Where the gown they have and, if you want, a nursing top later?? What other options are there? I guess maybe a robe from home.

  • I will bite. After being in L&D so much these last couple of weeks I'm planning on making something to wear. I HATE their gowns. They don't fit and I either am uncomfortable and exposed or strangled by the ties. I will find cheap fabric and make it myself with the intention to throw it away after.

The search function works. On both the app and using browsers.
    Not for me. Thanks though.

  • I'm wearing lingerie. Maybe crotchless panties for the baby to slip through during delivery.

My hospital REQUIRES you wear a hospital gown.. after you can put on whatever the hell you want.  My aggravation with this post isn't that it's been asked many times before it's that an adult woman needs assistance with what to wear in the first place... but I'm not one to ask for help or take suggestions easily so ...

edit because spelling the is difficult

  • I always find these posts so interesting because while most women DO say they want to wear their makeup and shave, there's a lot more eye-rolling at not wanting to wear the hospital gown, like that's more vain? (Not this thread necessarily, but I noticed it in the last thread on this topic, particularly.)

I think everyone has that One Thing they need to feel like themselves and not a cog in a faceless medical system and for some people that's not wearing the hospital gown. It is for me, probably because I NEVER wear makeup (and only shave in the summer), so clothes are how I'm going to feel like me.

Anyway. I'm going to be wearing a ratty old nightgown that I love but that is destined to go into the rag basket soon.

  • During =hospital gown they give and probably a sports bra.
After=I got a simple cotton night gown from Victoria's Secret for $10 during their semi annual sale. Says some stuff in fench maybe on the front I have no idea I just know that the one at Walmart was $13 and crunch and this one was $10!
As soon as I can=put on pants a bra and a tank top AtLEaST!

Are you a STM? I'm wondering about a sports bra getting in the way of skin to skin contact afterwards. I don't want to be all willy nilly without a bra on during labor (I feel like it'd just add to the discomfort) But I was thinking along the same lines of what to wear & I'm hoping you can tell me if it worked well for you.

  • Where I delivered B and will deliver this one, we don't have an option. It's a hospital gown , they give it to you and you wear it. We are not allowed to wear anything else incase of an emergency.
And shit gets messy during labour and delivery, not sure why you would spend money on something nice.

No worries!  I must have missed the other 5000 posts about this too.  I am a frequest TB user but I don't live my life on here waiting for someone to post a board that I want to know about.  I also don't sit around making rude comments for those that may have missed the previous messages.  I am not sure why everyone on these boards are so mean to each other.  I mean, we are all in the same situation and should have some empathy for each other.  Not to mention, if people don't want to be helpful when answering actual questions, maybe they shouldn't post anything at all.  Sorry you got so much backlash for asking a legit question.

Yep, we just had this exact same discussion recently. Hospital gown for me. I can't imagine being comfortable in anything else and I don't want to get something I own all nasty.

  • @laura8388 lots of women on here have said they gave birth in a bra. Why did you have to take it off?

I ripped mine off willingly when I was in labor with DS. I was sweating my ass off during contractions and then started throwing up. It was much more comfortable without one.

This! I started throwing up right at transition and was very happy that it was on their gown and not my clothes. Plus I could just take it off and put on a new one. I didn't put my own clothes back on until it was time to go home.

Same here. I threw up twice during labor. I kept the hospital gown on the entire time I was there with the exception of a few hours before I was discharged and the one time we ventured down to the gift shop. There was no way I was chancing getting my own clothes nasty. Plus the gown provides easy access for BF and the times you get checked for bleeding etc.

What to wear during labor is a legit question?!
If it had been a seriously important question no one would have mentioned that it's been asked several times but gimme a break... What you wear during labor is not a serious question and will be the last damn thing on your mind.
  • @amandapthompson

If it wasn't a legit question, why would it be posted here 50 times.  Seems to be a common question on a lot of ladies' minds.

  • I don't care to be stylish not do I refuse to wear the hospital gown. If you reread my original post, my main concerns are comfort, breast feeding and skin to skin. Not how I look. If ladies can AW about their nurseries or whine about registries, there is no reason that I can't post a question as a FTM about others experiences with clothing during labor and how I might make things more comfortable for myself and LO.
  • Tonight at our perinatal class, a girl on one of the labor videos was wearing what I can only describe as an "athletic skirt". It looked like it was made out of comfy stretchy cotton, it was a bit longer than a tennis skirt and it has a few small slits which seemed to give her room to squat and what not. She was wearing that and a sports bra. I'm going to look into it, it looked practical but covered where it mattered.

    Here's one I found on etsy https://www.etsy.com/listing/80221244/birth-skirt-birthing-skirt-womens-labor

You could probably make one really easily if you sew at all! Or find any cotton comfy skirt for that matter.

I'm having a csection so it won't help me any, but think this skirt bra idea is awesome. Like pp said you can diy it. It can be any jersey/ knit kinda fabric, cut to desired length and add some slits...hello clearance department.
  • Hospital gown for labour.
I took it off for delivery as I was overheating. Baby came right to my chest at delivery and stayed there for an hour.
I got a fresh gown after that because they draped the first one over me after I delivered and it got bloody.

I only changed into my own clothes when I was leaving the hospital the next day because I bled so much I would rather bleed on hospital clothing, than all over mine.

Thank you for posting this! I've been trying to figure out exactly what I want to make and hadn't seen this type of skirt yet! I think paired with a nursing tank would be genius!
